B. Intensive Course

An intensive course will be held in Jan/Feb 2014 at USM main campus.
Attendance is compulsory during the intensive course. Two face to face lectures
will be conducted by the course instructor during the Intensive Course

Lecture 1

Chapter 4: Integration
Textbook (page 616 697)

Lecture 2

Chapter 5: Application of the Definite Integral
Textbook (page 744 755)

Important Note:

1. Studying in distance learning environment required full commitment. You
need to manage your time wisely, complete all the assigned tutorial and
assignment questions, ready to participate fully in the video conference
session. You are responsible for being an active participant in the video
conferencing class rather than a passive observer. If you miss the class,
please download the video from the portal.

2. Students need study the respective topics and solve the exercise questions
before attending video conference session. During the video conference
session, the summary of the specific chosen topic will be given by the course
instructor, followed by the tutorial session where students are encouraged to
participate, by asking questions or answering questions.
3. Students are encouraged to use e-learning forum portal to discuss questions
or problems with course mates and course instructor.

C. Assignments

There are 2 written assignments. Each assignment should be done in a group of
3-5 students from the same regional centre. Assignment questions will be
uploaded in the portal.

Assignment 1:
Cover topics on limits and continuity, differentiation and application of
differentiation. The due date for this assignment is 3
rd
January 2014.
5

Assignment 2:
Cover topics on integration, application of integration, linear algebra and basic
statistics. The due date for this assignment is 30
th
April 2014.

Important notes

1. To encourage collaborative learning, each assignment should be done in a
group of 3-5 students from the same regional centre.

2. Please be advice that the assignments must reached PPPJJs office no later
than the due date. Late assignment will not be entertained nor graded.
Therefore please submit your assignment on time as the assignment
questions and the deadline of the assignments have been given at the
beginning of the academic session.

3. Assignments that have been submitted will not be returned, so please make
a copy for your keepsake.

D. Test

As part of the continuous assessment of the course, a test will be conducted
during the intensive course. The schedule will be given later. It will cover the
topics on Limits and Continuity, Differentiation and Applications of Differentiation.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF COURSE WORK AND FINAL EXAMINATION

The duration of the final examination is 3 hours and will be held during the month
of June 2014. It will cover all 4 topics that have been discussed during the video
conference sessions and lectures during the intensive course.

The overall grade will be based on the following contributions:

Final examination: 60%

Course work: Assignment 1 10%
Assignment 2 10% 40%
Test 20%
