General Election 2014: Bengal to have five-phase polls
Debashis Konar, TNN | Mar 5, 2014, 01.00PM IST
KOLKATA: Bengal will have five-phase polls starting from April 17 and will end on May 12. As
Mamata Banerjee is aspiring for the post of the PM, it will be an acid test for her as election to the
42 parliamentary seats will be held in five-phases and under central police, as earlier the Left had
alleged that Trinamool had rigged the panchayat polls with muscle power.
North Bengal will be voting on April 17 as there will be polls for four constituencies only --
Darjeeling, Coch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. In the second phase there will be voting in
Raigunj, Malda north and south, Balurghat, Jangipur and Murshidabad on April 24. Notably,
Adhir Choudhury who is the Pradesh Congress president and represents Berhampore seat will
have the election on May 12 and thus will have the opportunity to supervise the polls in
Murshidabad district to which Choudhury, junior railway minister belongs to.
The third phase polling in the state will be on April 30 for the districts of Howrah, Hooghly,
Birbhum and for two seats of Burdwan -- Burdwan east and Burdwan-Durgapur. Thus there will
be polling for nine constituencies on April 30.

There will be huge police contingent for the polls in Maoist belt of Midnapore, Purulia and
Bankura where there are six constituencies where polling will be held on May 7. But the most
crucial part of the polling will be on the last phase when polls will be held in 17 constituencies
including Kolkata, North and South 24-Parganas and also East Midnapore and Berhampore seat.
With a gradual increase in BJP 's vote bank according to mode poll, the results in some of the
seats can be surprising in Bengal, political experts said, though upbeat Trinamool leaders are
claiming to bag over 30 seats this time to make their presence in the national politics.
