JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Media & Marketing Manager


Reporting to: Chief Executive
Salary: Grade 2/3
Terms & conditions: Full-time, permanent post of 36.5 hrs per week; 27 days holiday per
annum; non-contributory pension
Location: Central London. The post will involve regular travel to Cambridge and
occasionally throughout the UK and Ireland.

Overall Objective of the Job


To develop, manage and execute the Society’s Strategic Plan for the promotion of Physiology. The
objective of this strategy being to communicate to members of the public, the scientific community and
science policy makers the importance and significance of Physiology.

The successful candidate will work in liaison with the Heads of Policy/External Affairs, Education,
Events and with the Editors in Chief and Managing Editor of The Journal of Physiology and
Experimental Physiology and their publishers Wiley-Blackwell. Of particularly importance will be
raising the profile of Physiology by securing positive publicity in the media, thereby enhancing its
reputation for excellence; gaining recognition of its achievements among the public and key
audiences and supporting the Society’s efforts to raise the profile of the discipline.

Key Activities
To review The Society’s activities, develop and implement a strategy for media communications and
public relations and assess its impact.
○ Develop The Society’s media communications and marketing strategies for different
audiences including scientists, funders, policy makers, the media, schools and the general
public
○ Develop good relations with UK based journalists of the UK and foreign media, especially
Science and Health Editors but also reporters on key specialist publications like the British
Medical Journal, so that their needs are understood and their attention is drawn to Physiology.
○ Develop good relations with other organizations involved with communicating science to the
public, such as the Science Media Centre in London.
○ Work with Editors, authors and staff of The Journal of Physiology and Experimental
Physiology to identify and write press releases for one or more newsworthy articles in each
journal issue.
○ Work with Editors, authors and staff of The Journal of Physiology to edit author-generated
non-technical summaries (120 words) for publication in The Journal’s Table of Contents (The
aim being to produce text appropriate for an intelligent but not specialist audience of the
readers of The Journal, members of the scientific and lay community accessing The Society’s
website and members of The Society and students in schools colleges and universities.
○ Liaise with Wiley-Blackwell and the publications team over access to press releases and other
publically available articles, including creating and maintaining a shared record of the activity
and analysis of download data.
○ Prepare press releases from The Society’s scientific meetings and other educational events
and activities. To highlight responses The Society makes to news events, consultations and
government policy statements.
○ Respond to media requests for expert statements on physiological issues either directly or by
developing a network of expert members willing to speak to the media on various subjects.
○ Consider and propose novel ways of providing publicity and information about the work of The
Society including scientific work published in the Journals (especially “hot” upcoming papers,
interviews with authors etc) such as podcasts via our website and other sites.
○ Monitor and prepare reports on media coverage of The Society’s activities, and evaluate the
impact of media relations activities, maintaining a register of agreed performance indicators
enabling The Society committees and the editors in chief and managing editors of the
Journals to assess the value of the work being done.
○ Marketing The Society and its activities, including membership, meetings, education and
external relations, in partnership with the Head of Education and Membership Services, the
Events Team, and other staff.
