First Aid Purposes
To give s)ift, effective initial assistance or treatment to a casualt% for an% in'ur% or sudden
illness before the arrival of second aid )here necessar%#
Everybody needs to know the basics of first aid. It comes handy at some or the other point in life. Not
everybody holds a first aid certificate though; some people perform first aid, even without a certificate in
hand. For instance, when a child gets hurt, the mother cleans up the wound, applies bandage etc, for which
she might not have a first aid certificate. But these are basic first aid techniue which almost everyone
knows.
!ome people take keen interest in providing first aid as a help to general public. "hey usually take up first
aid courses and obtain a certificate. "here are various means to obtain a first aid certificate. #ou can either
contact your nearest health center or your social center; enroll into a crash course or a full course.
But before deciding whether you want a certificate or $ust want general information on it, you need to reali%e
the importance of first aid. &hy do you need first aid'
&ell, there are ( very important reasons for proving first aid)
* "o save somebody+s life
* "o avoid more in$ury
* "o support healing.
,ike any other medical aid, the basic or elementary goal of providing first aid is to save life. #ou cannot
always depend on a doctor to be present to save somebody+s life. It is not possible for doctors to be around
wherever anyone gets in$ured or in case of accidents. "herefore, someone who knows first aid can save
your life.
"he basic reuirement to stay alive is to breathe free. &hen somebody falls unconscious, or gets choked, it
gets difficult for them to breathe free. In case of choking, the first aider will use techniues that include
putting pressure on the abdomen or slapping the back to remove the cause of choking and clearing the
passage for the air to move in and out freely. If the victim is unable to breathe even after the air passage has
been cleared, the first aider might perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation or -./. In this the first aider gives
mouth0to0mouth breathing to the victim and massages his or her chest simultaneously in order to aid normal
flow of blood throughout the body.
!econdly, first aid aims to avoid more in$ury and to stop a wound from getting worse. &hen you perform first
aid on somebody, you are helping him out of some danger. It might be as simple as moving the victim away
from where he or she got hurt. For instance, by covering a burning victim with a blanket in case of fire, it is
providing first aid to the victim. !imilarly, covering a wound with a cloth to control bleeding is also another
form of first aid.
,ast but not least is to provide help in healing. In some cases, first aid might be the treatment to an in$ury
like putting a bandage to a small scratch, whereas, in some cases, it could be the fist step to healing. .eople
trained in first aid know how to manage any kind of situation from a small cut to a fracture, till the arrival of
the medical team.

Importance of first aid training
Human bodies are susceptible to injuries, illnesses and trauma. We never know when any injury
may happen to us or the people we love or those who are around us. Thus it is always good to have
some amount of basic knowledge to take care of critical situations, to keep it from going from bad
to worse or till the medical help arrives.
Administering first aid to victims in the event of accidents, mishaps and occurrences during office
and school hours or in the case of some accident is encouraged. ne must know the basics of
administering first aid and this knowledge is gained by getting trained.
Listed below are the 5 top reasons why first aid training is so important.
Increases safety: The basis of first aid training is !prevention!. It is always better to be safe
than to be sorry. "nowledge of first aid promotes the sense of safety and well being amongst
people, prompting them to be more alert and safe in the surroundings they dwell in. Awareness
and desire to be accident free keeps you more safe and secure, reducing the number of causalities
and accidents.
Helps save lives: If a person who is trained to give first aid administration happens to see any
casualty in his vicinity, immediate action can be taken and lives be saved. While it is natural for
most of us to rush to support any injured person, a trained person is more reliable, confident and
in control of himself and his actions while in trauma situations.
Helps relieve pain: #ome injuries re$uire a very simple solution like applying ice pack or a
$uick rub. A ride to the emergency room is not necessary, at least not for some time. In such
cases, calling a person trained in first aid courses is more reliable. They can help reduce the pain
by performing simple procedures and can help relieve pain at least temporarily.
Makes people more secure: "nowing that you can save your own life when re$uired, or that
of the people you know or those in trauma during some emergency helps you rela% more and be
more secure. The sense of security promotes a healthy and a more confident environment around
you where you and the people around you would feel more secure. The presence of such people
provides reassurance to the others in the situation.
revents the situation from becoming worse: A trained person would know how to keep
the situation from becoming bad to worse. They will provide temporary treatment which will keep
the condition of the victim from deteriorating, till professional help arrives.
"nowledge of first aid promotes a healthy, secure and a safer environment, and instills confidence
amongst people, their families, their colleagues and associates. &asic first aid knowledge is very
helpful in dealing with trauma situations. 'ot just the medical help they provide, but the
confidence they e%hibit is very helpful during casualties. &eing trained to provide first aid is useful
to oneself and society.

The key aims of first aid can be summarized in three key points:-
[5]
Preserve life: the overriding aim of all medical care, including first aid, is to save
lives and minimise the threat of death.
Prevent further harm: also sometimes called prevent the condition from
worsening, or danger of further injury, this covers both external factors, such as
moving a patient away from any cause of harm, and applying first aid techniques to
prevent worsening of the condition, such as applying pressure to stop a bleed becoming
dangerous.
Promote recovery: first aid also involves trying to start the recovery process from
the illness or injury, and in some cases might involve completing a treatment, such as in
the case of applying a plaster to a small wound.
First aid training also involves the prevention of initial injury and responder safety, and the
treatment phases.
Promote clinical excellence in patient care and professional nursing practice through the
encouragement, promotion and support of professional development and engagement.
FF. encourages nursing and medical teams to serve through their strengths and specialties in order
to best meet the needs of local communities. &e welcome new outreach ideas1
