Fauser Brown lOK, the last
Grand Prix race, caused top
honors to go to two women -

Glynn.
When t he rul es were rst
set up. runners would be
scored based on their ve top
scores out of seven possible
races. Had we known only
six races would be run, we
probably would have used the
top four scores. Carol Hansen
was the top scoring woman
using the top ve scores and
Kate Glynn was the top
woman using four scores.
The accompanying results
use the top ve.

keep my lead and he won by
less than one point. Tom was
the only runner to run all six
races. Only six runners ran at

Car ol , a r el at i ve
newcomer to racing, became
the rst grandmother to win
the Grand Pri x and the 40-49

won the 20-29 year age

in the results, runners had to
run at least 3 of the races.
OM iously. we are
disappointed with the low-

would have competed more,
except there were many

As I take pen in hand for my nal time (actually it's a
keyboard-this is the '90s ya'know!), 01' Blue Eyes'
song, And so, the end is near...J^J> keeps running
through my mind. For those of you not able to attend
the November club meeting (Wednesday, November 9)
for the ofcial transfer of the gavel or (say it isn't so)
the dinner dance (Friday, November 18th) to hear this
outgoing president say, "Thanks, it's been a fun run,"
well thanlb for the opportunity to work with all of
you; I've truly enjoyed it.
As with most organizptionsy 80% of the work
is done by 20% of its members , and TRRC is no
different, Soy thanksy especially to you 20%ers - you
know who you are; you*re the one with the water cup
shouting encouragement; you*re the one with the
road ag keeping our race course safe; you're the
one clicking the crominiXy scoring the race,
organizing TRRC's teams to wear the green and
white at "away" competitions; you're the one doing
the monthly meeting summariesy keeping the books in
ordery and you're the one doing this newsletter.
I leave the ofce with TRRC in ne shape-
membership is consistent if not up a few (I'm always
seeing new faces); weekly training events, from track
workouts to Wednesday night group runs; to the
always-popular Pump House Gang, are all in good
order and, after the bills are paid, we've even got a
few dollars left in the kitty.
I accepted this responsibility as a "give back"
to a sport that has been very good to me and my
family (more correctly, to Pat and I, although Erik at
25 and Suzi at 24 are getting closer to understanding
the "why" in the why we do this.) But, the end result
has been more of a "got back" than a "give." I've
learned a great deal about just people. Even though,
as it was said to me one evening recently, we're a
very diverse group Taconic, we're all just people!
Some doctors, housewives, farmers, lawyers, even a
salesman or two! But, on Wednesday afternoons or
Saturday mornings, or when we toe e line at Sunday
races, none of that matters, only that you made it, to
share, enjoy, compete and belong. Think of how
many miles you'd do every Saturday morning or speed
laps on Tuesday if no one else showed up. So, that's
been the fun run, doing my little part in organizing
people to just show up.
SOy thanks TaconiCy upward & upward, and
especially to the 20%ers - you've all made me very
proud to serve.
See ya' out there!
Fredy Low

I A Repor t On The Team. . .
C The Taconic Women's Masters Team has sent
runners to the last three events sponsored by NYRRC.
In August, at the Back To Work 4 Mile Race, Melanie
Benvenue (2nd age group), Kate Glynn (3rd age
group), Carol Hansen and Lee Saroken (2nd age group)
all participated, to give Taconic a 2nd place nish.
In September, Kate Glynn took a 1st age group
win, Joanne Bertram took a 5th age group prize and
Lee Saroken took a 2nd age group award at the Isola
Cross Country 4 Miler. The course was a double loop
that included two trips up Cemetery Hill! TRRC got a
FIRST place Team Finish for this race. Hurray!
October brought the Women's Half Marathon
on the 15th. Our team included Melanie, Kate, Lee,
Donna Cavalieri and Carolyn Subin. The clash be
tween TAconic and Millrose was very close, and the
results (due to computer breakdown at the race) are
unknown as of press-time for TRL, but.. .to be contin
ued! Individual awards were won by Melanie (2nd age
group), Kate (3rd age group) and Lee (1st age group).
Donna and Carolyn had GREAT times and, as usual,
we all had lots of laughs, miles and fun.
With 2 events left for this year's scoring,
Millrose has a sizeable lead over us. The limited
number of Women' s Master Runners from Taconi c
entered in the NYCity Marathon limits our hopes of
out-scoring Millrose, but, on the "any given day"
principle, who knows what can happen.
In December, the 10 Miler in Central Park will

2nd Annual "Lowtv Loop"
By Kafy D. Quinn
How did the "Lowry Loop" get its start? That's a
question ! asked co-founder Kevin Lowry. He didn't have
an answer. Like a lot of the fun times enjoyed by laconics,
some folks thought it would be fun, tried it, liked it, and
repeated it! Hence, Labor Day 1994 saw 10 Jovial Taconics
assemble early in the morning at the pumphouse and set off
on an out and back course to "the mailboxes." Some of
those who had participated in the 1993 running of the
Lowry Loop sported their '93 race singlets. All of those
who ran this year were rewarded with appropriate "glass
w a r e . "
This event enjoys no formal endorsementnor
nanacial sponsorship from TRRC. Kevin and Donny
Lowry give it all it's smiling sponsorship. This year, overall
winners of this unique event were rewarded with gold,
silver and bronze keys, entitling them to access to continued
merry making! The refreshments, including a rather
unorthodox beverage at the "water" stop and contents of
keepsake glasses afterward, were provided by the events'
names ak es .
I had the opportunity to look through a photo
collection of the '93 event - very interesting! I am pleased
J to have these two photos to publish, Kevin "thinks" Greg
Diamond was holding the camera. Good job, Greg. These
have been approved for the general audience!
Winners of the 1994 Lowry Loop, left to right:
Vinnie Juliano (3rd), Rick Salcmmo (2nd) and Dave
O'Toole (1st).
Smile for the camera following the Lowr\' Loop, are participants (back, left to right):Bill Foley, Carmelo Roldan, Vinnie Juliano, Donny
1 owry. Howie Solow, Kevin Lowry. Jack Magrone. (and front): Donny Lutrick (with Nike). Rick Salemmo and Dave O' loole.

We ar e t he RUNNI NG ELI TE!
A Comment From The Editor...
Last year, 70 Taconics
participated in the Dutchess County
Classic. This year there were over
100 of us! As someone who has run
the 5K, Half Marathon and Marathon
at this event on various years, I want
to say. ..
"Great job MHRRC. This is
an extremely well-done event!
"Thanks, TRRC, for waiting
to welcome me in after my Mara
thons. This year's was my slowest,
but my welcome committee gets
better every year.
"If you weren't one of the
many TRRC'rs at this year's event,
mark your calendar and plan to be
there next year!"

Obviously, we are

As I take pen in hand for my nal time (actually it's a
keyboard-this is the '90s ya'know!), 01' Blue Eyes'
song, J* And so, the end is near...J>J* keeps running
through my mind. For those of you not able to attend
the November club meeting (Wednesday, November 9)
for the ofcial transfer of the gavel or (say it isn't so)
the dinner dance (Friday, November 18th) to hear this
outgoing president say, "Thanks, it's been a fun run,"
well thanks for the opportunity to work with all of
you; I've truly enjoyed it.
As with most organizations^ 80% of the work
is done by 20% of its members , and TRRC is no
different. So, thankSy especially to you 20%ers - you
know who you are; you're the one with the water cup
shouting encouragement; you're the one with the
road ag keeping our race course safe; you're the
one clicking the crominix, scoring the race,
organizing TRRC's teams to wear the green and
white at "away" competitions; you're the one doing
the monthly meeting summariesy keeping the books in
ordery and you're the one doing this newsletter.
1 leave the ofce with TRRC in ne shape-
membership is consistent if not up a few (I'm always
seeing new faces); weekly training events, from track
workouts to Wednesday night group runs; to the
always-popular Pump House Gang, are all in good
order and, after the bills are paid, we've even got a
few dollars left in the kitty.
1 accepted this responsibility as a "give back"
to a sport that has been very good to me and my
family (more correctly, to Pat and I, although Erik at
25 and Suzi at 24 are getting closer to understanding
the "why" in the why we do this.) But, the end result
has been more of a "got back" than a "give." I've
learned a great deal about just people. Even though,
as it was said to me one evening recently, we're a
very diverse group Taconic, we're all just people!
Some doctors, housewives, farmers, lawyers, even a
salesman or two! But, on Wednesday afternoons or
Saturday mornings, or when we toe ie line at Sunday
races, none of that matters, only that you made it, to
share, enjoy, compete and belong. Think of how
many miles you'd do every Saturday morning or speed
laps on Tuesday if no one else showed up. So, that's
been the fun run, doing my little part in organizing
people to just show up.
Soy thanks Taconicy upward & upwardy and
especially to the 20%ers - you've all made me very
proud to serve.

In December, the 10 Miler in Central Park will
be our last event of the calendar year. If anyone is
interested in joining us for this race, which is both a
men's and women's event, please call Lee at (914) 741-
2408. Happy Running!

2nd Annual "Lowry Loop"
By Katy D. Quinu
How did the "Lowry Loop" get Its start? That's a
question I asked co-founder Kevin Lowry. He didn't have
an answer. Like a lot of the fun times enjoyed by Taconics,
some folks thought it would be fun, tried it, liked it, and
repeated it! Hence, Labor Day 1994 saw lOJovial Taconics
assemble early in the morning at the piimphouse and set off
on an out and back course to "the mailboxes." Some of
those who had participated in the 1993 running of the
Lowry Loop sported their '93 race singlets. All of those
who ran this year were rewarded with appropriate "glass
wa r e . "
This event enjoys no formal endorsementnor
tlnanacial sponsorship from TRRC. Kevin and Donny
Lowry give it all it's smiling sponsorship. This year, overall
winners of this unique event were rewarded with gold,
silver and bronze keys, entitling them to access to continued
merry making! The refreshments, including a rather
unorthodox beverage at the "water" stop and contents of
keepsake glasses afterward, were provided by the events'
n a me s a k e s .
1 had the opportunity to look through a photo
collection of the '93 event - very interesting! 1 am pleased
to have these two photos to publish. Kevin "thinks" Greg
Diamond was holding the camera. Good job, Greg. These
have been approved for the general audience!
Winners of the 1994 Lowry Loop, left to right:
Vinnie Juliano (3rd), Rick Salemmo (2nd) and Dave
O' Tool e( l st ) .
Smile for the camera following the Lowty Loop, are participants (back, left to right):Bill Foley, Carmelo Roldan, Vinnie Juliano. Donny
i owry. Howie Solow, Kevin Lowry, Jack Magrone, (and front); Donny Lutrick (with Nike). Rick Salemmo and Dave O' I oole.

A CommentFrom TheEcHtor...
Last year, 70 Taconics
participated in the Dutchess County
Classic. This year there were over
100 of us! As someone who has run
the 5K, Half Marathon and Marathon
at this event on various years, I want
t o say. . .
"Great job MHRRC. This is
an extremely well-done event!
"Thanks, TRRC, for waiting
to welcome me in after my Mara
thons. This year's was my slowest,
but my welcome committee gets
better every year.
"If you weren't one of the
many TRRC'rs at this year's event,
mark your calendar and plan to be
there next year!"

What does laconic Men's Masters Relay Team have
in common with another well-known New York
team? On September 25th, eight of us journeyed to
Jones Beach for the Ninth Annual Ocean To Sound
Relay, and once again, like our slightly better known
counterparts, we came out bri desmai ds at an event
patterned after laconic's own Manhattan to Peekskill
Relay,
Word through the grapevine was that our
perennial conquerors. Hartford Track Club, were
having difculty elding a team and were unusually
weak. Finally, this seemed to be our year to win that
all or nothing $1,000 Master's rst prize. True, we
did have some difculty elding a team ourselves.
The line-up was not nalized until the night before,
but then, Taconic has this kind of depth!
Pete Corsino ran a great rst leg, but
unfortunately, Hartford's lead-off man was even
better, and by the Hand-off, they already had over
three minutes lead. We gured they had front
loaded, and after Nick Caswell picked up half a
minute or so on the second leg, it seemed a plausible
theory. My third leg put the theor>' on hold! Scott
Abercrombie's fourth leg breathed a little ickering
life into our hopes, but when Hartford's fourth man,
Jim MacShane took off, we realized that they had
reloaded. We have never noticed anything weak
about his running! It was only a question of by how
much they would beat us, Tony Galfano, John
Hallinan. Joe Porcaro and Ken Filmanski all ran great
legs, but were faced with an insurmountable lead.
Our only hope was that Hartford might miss the
course - they have done this before - but even so. we
were unable to beat them! Not even a chance this
t i me !
The Relay's overall winner was Inside
Track, an open team from Pennsylvania, with a
sparkling time of 4:16:27,1. Five other teams were
under ve hours, among them, fth place Hartford
Masters with a time of 4:56:33.5. Taconic Masters
was eight overall with a time of 5:04:45.3 One
mixed team. Super Runners Shop, and a corporate
team, Brookhaven National Lab were ahead of us.
Warren Street Women's Open, the rst women's team
was in eleventh place with a ne time of 5:13:53,3,
Altogether, there were 114 teams that included two
with physically handicapped members. The
Plainview - Old Bethpage Road Runners Club that
organizes this event did its typically impressive job.
The club really gets the community involved, obtains
lots of sponsorship, and when it is all over, hosts an
excellent party we\here you can nally catch up with
the competition. The Hartford guys proved to be
very gracious winners. Alas, their wrinkles and gray
hairs indicate that they may, indeed, be forty plus!

The Race f or t he Cure
Taconi c at i t s Fi nest
By Richard Adamski
Having been a member of Taconic for 11 years,
I have become very familiar with the multiple
personalities of the group. I have witnessed everything
from their competitive spirit to their partying spirit.
However, on September 11, 1994, a day I will never
forget, the group participated in "The Race for the Cure"
and, without question, they put their best foot forward.
The Race for the Cure was a fundraiser for the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation which funds
breast cancer research, education, screening and
t r e a t m e n t .
Earlier this year, my wife, Myra, lost her 11 year
battle with the disease. The group's participation in the
race was the idea of my dear friends, Nancy Young, Kate
Quinn, Carol Hansen and Lee Saroken. I was moved to
tears when I learned from Nancy's husband, Greg
Diamond, that as a special tribute to my wife, the group
was participating in the race under the team name of
"TRRC for Myra".
While preparing for the race, the group quickly
grew from the original four to fty-four, and a bus was
chartered to take the group down to the city. The group
included some of my wife's non-running friends as well
as some of the mal e members of the cl ub who came
down to provide support.
Kate designed a beautiful T-shirt bearing the
team's name,"TRRC for Myra" and included an outline
of a cala lilly, Myra's favorite ower. Three days prior to
the race, Nancy, Carol, Lee along with some help from
Myles O'RJiodes, set a PR for number of race packets
picked up for friends when they travelled to the city to
pick up 54 race packets. Although we all looked forward
to the race day with great anticipation, nothing could
have prepared us for the emotional experiences of the
day.
As our bus pulled up to the 67th Street entrance
at Central Park, each of us was overwhelmed by the sight
of thousands of women preparing for the race. As we
unloaded the usual Taconic supplies (food, beer, wine,
champagne, etc.), I was relieved to nd President Fredy
Lowe at my side. As a veteran of a number of Taconic
trips to Central Park, he very quickly organized a search
party to locate a suitable picnic area for the group, and
directed the logistics. 1 recall waiting at the curb with
two aluminum tables, four three-foot hero sandwiches
and two tubs of soda, beer and wine waiting for the
search party to come back. I was amused that as I was
waiting, a number of people observed our Taconic
banner and one person commented "there"s Taconic
again!" I overheard another say "that Taconic group
really knows how to party!"
As we established our picnic area, a number of
group pictures were taken (compliments of Jack
Brennan), and one could feel the emotion in the air as the
group anticipated the start of the race/walk. Over 9,000
walkers and runners lined up for the start. The Taconic
talent ranged everywhere from Lori Jorgenson (who
nished sixth overall) to a group of my wife's friends
who walked through the 5K course. Participation in the
actual race was restri cted to women and mal e breast
cancer survivors. While race participants were issued
white racing bibs, breast cancer survivors were issued
pink bibs and pink sun visors. As I waited for the race to
begin, 1 was awed by the number of pink bibs in the
group and the realization of how many lives have been
affected by this disease.
I cheered the group on as I proudly displayed my
home-made "TRRC for Myra" placard. I recall standing
and saying silently "This is for you, Hun," without any
doubt in my mind that my wife could hear me. As the
tears streamed down my cheeks, a number of folks from
our group stopped to give me a little hug of support.
As the race ended and we all congregated, there
was the strangest feeling in the air. You could tell that
everyone felt it...a special kinship. The tears and hugs
brought the club members closer to one another than at
any time I can remember.
On the day following the race, I received a
number of calls from club members who wanted to talk
of the previous day's experience, but we found it difcult
t o des c r i be.
On the next day, I received a note from a friend
of Myra's who captured the spirit of the day for all
participants.
De a r Ri c h a r d :
I was so pleased and proud to be a participant in "The Race
for a Cure" and the very special tribute to Myra. I enjoyed meeting
the TRRC members, the bus ride, the walk and the picnic. I was
proud to be part of the group and felt very welcome.
When we were walking and you were cheering us on for
Myra I felt very moved. I also felt guilty as I walked. I am a nine-
year cancer survivor and as I walked and participated throughout the
day I asked myself, "Why?" What is the purpose of some surviving
and many not surviving? Myra had your devotion and love and yet
God took her from her family and yet I have lived on.
I realized today that there is a real purpose to my life.
Survivors have a responsibility to never forget the loved ones who
have pas.sed on and to live each day with a true spirit of love in all
they do. This day vvoi- a beautiful reminder of love and life.
Thank you for renewing my belief in love and life. Myra
a very lucky lady...she had you. Many, many, (hanks...God

Lebow Remember ed
By Steve Quinn
Many laconics remember NYRRC President
Fred Lebow who recently completed his "last run." I
personally have three recollections of Fred.
1 remember rst seeing him in the ofces of the
NYRRC in 1989. I was new to running, and seeing the
legend in person was a real treat.
In 1990,1 completed the New York City Mara
thon in about ve hours (Moftt asked that I run with
him.) When I arrived at the nish line, there was Fred
Lebow, smiling, bearded, with his blue NYC marathon
chapeau in place. "Congratulations," he said. I could not
belive it. I had seen previous marathons on TV, and I
knew that he rode in the lead car, but still, ve hours later,
here he was, caring enough about the middle and back of
the packer to stay there and welcome each of us.
Later, after his rst bout with cancer, I again met
Fred at the NYRRC Bagel run. I took that opportunity to
buy his book, and I asked him to autograph it, which he
did. I remember the bravery in his face. Cancer had
stripped him of much of his vitality and quickness, but he
was there for the runners. That is what made Fred
L^ed,and what made the NYC Marathon Fred. He
believed that it should be a world class people's
\ race, and that it is.
I asked TRRC's rst president, Dan Cafffey, what
his recollections of Fred Lebow were. Dan said that he
remembers Fred as a "business man" - tough when he
needed to be, and yet, ever the ambassador. Dan credits
Fred's interest in marathoning as instrumental in fostering
the development of the suburban running clubs. Fred
believed that the middle of the packer and average runner
were critical to the success of the sport. He used to meet
with the local club presidents and help with sponsors
(when money was available), and talk philosophy - like
keeping races affordable. Dan also remembers times when
Fred wanted to have our (now demct) Manhattan to
Peekskill relay turned aroimd into a Peekskill to Manhat
tan Relay. (That was one argument Fred did not win.)
These are my memories. I'm glad I met Fred, and
I'm glad he loved running. 1 know I will see him again.
God will surely post Fred at the Pearly Gates where he'll
erect a clock and there, under a NYRRC banner, he'll
undoubtedly say "Good job! Congratulations!" Rest well,
Fr ed Lebow.

1994 Saguaro National Monument Labor Day Run
By Larry Lenahan
Recently, while on vacation in Tucson, AZ,
I was lucky enough to come across an interesting and
challenging race. Although it was run on blacktop,
you couldn't really call it a road race. It was more
like a primer for the Western States 100. The race
took place in one of the four National Parks
surrounding Tucson - Saguaro (pronounced Suaro)
National Monument - East. There is also a West.
Here's why I view it as a primer to the
Western States 100. It started at 6:30 in the morning,
the temperature was 85 degrees. All you could see
from the starting line was the sun coming over the
mountains in the not too distant East (that is, not
much other than cacti and more cacti). The distance
was 8.03 unshaded hot miles under a cloudless blue
sky. Get the picture? I was in the desert! Not a
sandy desert like the Sahara, or a rocky, sparsely
foliated one like in Western California and Nevada,
but one with plants and wildlife, more than 30
species. Oh, by the way, this was the Southern
Ari zona Road Runners rst race of the season.
Like an inexperienced runner, I foolishly
asked a couple of the ofcials what the course was
like. They told me (with a straight face), you start
off going downhill (true), run along a at section and
then come back up from the oor of the canyon.
Hey, this sounds like Putnam County. No sweat!
The missed operative word was "canyon," not valley.
No one bothered telling me, you'll develop shin
splints going into the canyon and hope your quads
and calves hold up coming out. It was more than a
steady winding 300 foot drop (possibly 500) in
approximately 1.5 miles from the starting line to the
oor of the canyon. Then, about 2 miles of ats
followed by about a 3.5 mile climb to the rim.
During most of the race, especially during the climb,
I rarely saw more than 5 out of the 323 other runners
on the course, (and that's not because I that slow)
other than when climbing. Then, foolishly, looking
up in hope that the end was near, I would see 1 or 2
more runners on a newly visible switchback above.
On the plus side, the scenery was
spectacular. Space limits me from saying much more
than it was starkly beautiful: barren, yet heavily
populated by majestic Saguaro cacti. Some of them
were over 50 feet tall, more than 150 years old and
weight in excess of 8 tons. One last comment: I
went back to the part a few days later with Mary
Joanne and our niece to video tape the course. While
in the reception center, we were given the rare
opportunity to see some of the native wildlife, two
packs - totaling about 10 - of wild javelinas (a small
version of the wild boars found in Europe). They
had come by, as they evidently do every day, to sleep
in the shade from the building.
The support was great and the mile markers
were clear. No splits were given, nor did the
National Park Rangers allow any trafc through,
throughout the race. Although, Initially, I was a little
bothered because splits were not given, I am
beginning to think that's not all bad. Subconsciously
it keeps you running at a realistic pace. That way,
you don't get in trouble trying to run at a pace beyond
your capability.
The post race activities and wards, in 5 year
age groups, were handled well. Also, it was
interesting to note, the times for the top 55-59 age
group participants were generally faster than for the
50-54 and some of the 45-49 top placers. The same
pattern appeared at the Kingston Half-Marathon.
Timewise, I was pleased: 1:21:16, place - in the back
of the pack: 285/324. I also traveled the furthest.
(We have to create some type of award for the runner
who travels the farthest.)
If you want to try something different, try
the Tucson area. There are more trails than you can
possible imagine in this city of 500,000. Over 128 in
Saguaro East alone. And the city and county are
adding more all the time. If anyone is interested, I
have a map or two to give you an idea of the number.

Taconic Masters Take Third In National 5K In Syracuse
By Nick Caswell
Why, I ask myself, do I do these trips? Picture this: ve hours driving in the pouring rain; a constant barrage
of wisecracks from Ken Filmanski; three accidents on Route #17; a struggling Packard; and a mess-up at the reception
desk of the Hotel Syracuse. (I'm tired just thinking about it.) But all that aside, we got free accomodations and, there
fore, more money to spend on beer. (Actually, it was Ken and Scott's money.) Oh what a night, early October 1963,1

The day of the race was bright, dry and breezy. The course was an out-and-back, fast and at road in a residen

The CHALLENGE of the SEVEN HILLS
In Rome they are colled Palatine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline,
Caelian and Aventine. For modern gladiators, the names are; Quaker Bridge,
Canopus, "Cujo", White, Sunset, Tinker and Bryant Pond. The hills included
in the Challenge of the Seven Hills have been chosen because they are
l ong and steep.
The Challenge is simply stated, however the simplicity masks the difculty.
The object is to run up each of the SEVEN HILLS as fast as possible.
Challengers will meet at Downing Park at 7:30am on Sunday, November 20, 1994.
Challengers will be divided into groups and car pools will be organized to
mimimize the number of cars involved. Each carload of Challengers will be given
a map, directions and a score sheet. Start and Stop lines will have been drawn
at the base and the crest of each hill. Challengers will record their own times

(this Is a hill challenge, not a Grand Prix.) When all SEVEN HLLS have been
conquered, the Challengers will reconvene at Downing Pork where the overall
"King" and "Queen" of the Hills will be determined.
Special commemorative long-sleeved T-shirts will be earned by each
successful Challenger.
The overall time limit from start to completion is 3.5 hours. Not surprisingly,
there will be refreshments back at Downing Park. Challengers MUST provide
their own timing, water and transportation to and between the hills. Designated
drivers are OK. There will be no trafc control or course aid in any manner.

The overall distance from bottom to top is 5.95 miles. Quaker Bridge is .6M,
"Cujo" is 1.0M, Tinker .65, Bryant Pond Road .7, Sunset Hill .8, White Hill .55,
and the topper is Canopus Hill at 1.65M.
The entry fee is $10. NO POST ENTRIES. Entry deadline is November 13.
The Race Director, Myles O'Rhodes, reserves the right to limit the eld to 500.

The Gl adi at or Out Of Door s
By Debbie Yagoda
What do mail carriers and runners have in common?
They eat and drink a lot, and often indiscriminately. They
think the four food groups are pizza, beer, potato chips and
Hostess Snowbal l s. But thi s i s not about food. It i s about
being outside, and the discomforts, if not outright dangers, of
the four seasons. (Yeah, I know we only have two seasons in
Northern Westchester; winter is October to May, and what's
left is summer.)
Let's do summer: I gure the average mail carrier is
on the road ve times as long as the average runner doing
eight miles, but both are likely to encounter more than a few
of Nature's practical jokes. For example, you're walking
(running) down the street (road), being reasonably safety-
conscious (I hope), but, consistent with human nature, you're
seeing the signts: owers, birds, pretty women (men), and by
the time you look up to check on what's in front of you, IT'S
TOO LATE! You're encased, head to foot, in deceptively
fragile looking white silk, test-weighted to ensnare a Chrysler
going sixty. You go to plucking it off your eyelids, your
elbows, your hair, looking like a deranged baseball coach,
and, calming down somewhat from that exercise, you
discover that the dispossessed arachnoid architect is sitting on
your shoulder, preparing to spin now and ask questions later.
Depending on how you feel about lower forms of life on your
body, you casually brush it off, or scream and crush. Surely,
we've all seen performances say, from some poor soul on the
stairs across the way, too grossed-out and hell-bent on getting
the web off to be concerned by the open-mouthed stares from
onlookers who may be inclined to summon the paramedics.
Then there are vari ous mushrooms that l ove the
humidity that you hate. You're making your innocent way
through a nice little shortcut when you go ankle-deep into
something uorescent orange, or shiny chestnut brown that
looks like melted plastic. I don't care how respectful you are
of Nature, you have to be hard-dressed to come up with any
use for fungi that look and smell like giant spoiled let
Mignons. Not to mention bees that lay claim to mailboxes,
ies the shape and nearly the size of stealth bombers that
have decided that there is no greater delicacy than the small
of your back, and so, even if you have avoided being food,
you strain you neck muscles trying to smash the insect.
Should we all come through summer's obstacles in
good form, we're ready to take on next season's. Till then,
good luck and good times!
When I Stopped Running:
or...when discipline, hardwork & responsibility
went out the door.
By Nick Caswell
This is not about a running injury; it is about attitude. If
you are injured, take no offense.
Philosophically speaking, events that occur are affected
by time, pass on, and are relegated to memory. Nothing new in
that. But it has some urgency if these events affect life. I
stopped running twenty-ve years ago, in the Autumn of 1969.
Ages ago, right? Yes, but to me, it seems like yesterday, and it
has affected my life.
The Summer was over, and I decided I wasn't going to
crank out 100 mile weeks for anyone: not for my self and not for
my college. 1 sounded too much alike discipline and hard work.
So, I rebelled and decided not to start my second cross-country
season at college. I would be come a free spirit instead.
So, in September, I told my coach I wasn't going to run.
All he could comment on was the length of my hair. And that's
when the rot set in.
So what happened? The comments, or excuses, if you
will, that follow, are a feeble explanation.
Events in my life just tumbled in sequence that summer.
When I returned from my rst year at college, I learned that a
high school friend. Bill Crusie, had been killed in Vietnam. He
was an All-American kid who played good football, basketball
and baseball. He now has a 5K race named in his honor. Then
came the moon shot. Apollo 11 gave us pride, but cost a fortune.
Everybody was "up" for this one. "Easy Rider" was released.
We all lined up to see it. Some of us got "up" for this one, too.
Charles Manson did what he did. The less said here, the better.
The Mets continued to win. People like being New Yorkers
again. And, that accident called Woodstock happened. The
numbers of people caught everyone unawares. You can't plan
these things. My rst Platonic Princess accompanied me all
summer. And my hair was growing. Far out!
So, these were my events. Simple, right? I should have
been so lucky. But the counter-culture demanded more from me,
or so I believed. Anyway, I stopped running. Too much regi
mentation; and 1 knew where that would lead, (I did?) Silly, now
that I think about it. But I have no regrets. Why should I? After
all, I'm running now. And, I've become more responsible to my
self...the rst step to becoming responsible to others. Something
to think about when I run next!

When You Wish Upon A Star...
The Road To The Disney World Marathon
(Part II)
By Mark Cooperman
"Roll'em, RoU'em, RoU'em, Oh, my legs are swollen...RoU'em, RoU'em, RoU'em, Raw Hide."
That was the song of August for runner fast or slow in the steam bath summer of'94. My stop in August
on my trek to Walt Disney World was the little hamlet of "Injuryville." You know, that place between Severe
Agony and Total Misery which leaves an average runner wondering "Who'll Stop the Pain?"
My rst real bout with leg injuries has been a learning experience which can be boiled down to the sim
plest of components and summed up in two amazing words..."Dixie Cup." Yes, the little Dixie Cup is the magic
bullet to soothe the sore muscles of my very tired legs. This little gem, when lled with a medicinal liquid, which
is not Scotch Whiskey...this time, has healing powers enough to make a believer of this doubter. That liquid is Just
plain ole tap water, frozen into its Dixie Cup dispenser and applied to those sore muscles in a deliberate assault on
pain.
So, where does a runner nd these remedies, so useful and true? Just ask a fellow Taconic-mate and you
may be surprised what information is out there...right, Nancy Young and Tom Church? With two months to go
before my rst marathon and many potential aches ahead of me, common sense treatments can go a long way in
bolstering a tired warrior's spirit.
The Superman syndrome is alive and well and living in Peekskill today. The "I'm not hurt too much"
mind-set is one of the biggest hurdles that most runners will encounter when they're running hurt and beginning to
recover their form after some time away from the track. In my case, the cryptonite causing me harm has been the
narrow-sightedness and beliefs 1 had in treating my aches with ace bandages and aspirin. As difcult as it is, the
only real treatment is rest and gradual retraining of the body to bring it back to the point prior to the injury. "Listen
to your body" isn't just a cliche for runners to repeat to themselves. That little voice you hear in your head might
just be Tinkerbell, letting you know that you may have pushed your body just a little too far. Then again, it could
be some hallucinogenic pain killer you've been taking to keep your tired soles on the road. Whatever it is, the
ultimate goal of nishing a training session should be tempered with a good dose of common sense. In my case, as
in most runners' minds, running hurt may just be another step in the long road to marathon competition and
completion. Hopefully, the Taconic support mechanism will be in place to prevent me from spending too much
time in "Injuryville."
Look out, Mickey. That schlogging sound you hear behind you is the limping of this Taconic runner, hot
on your little mouse feet...beware! (To be continued.)
