The world today’s university graduates will live and compete in upon their graduation will be markedly different than their parents’ – or even their older siblings’, due to the imminent ASEAN single market scheduled to be enacted in 2015. Surely there have been doubts that it won’t materialize until much later, but the reality has crept in: app stores and freelance service exchange websites defy geographical boundaries. To address this, BINUS University has tried several ways to internationalize our institution until we came up with an idea that the changes needed must be started from home (i.e. knitted into students’ learning experience), integrated with current practice, and accomplished by lowering the barrier for all parties involved – faculty members, students, and parents. This we do by creating a separate cohort named Global Class which integrates a series of preparation for students to go study abroad since the very first day and a 1-semester compulsory study abroad during their 3rd year of study. Studies have cited that money has been the main barrier for studying abroad. For Indonesians, there’s another major barrier: we’re an archipelago, so going abroad isn’t as natural as it is for many continental nations. By knitting the study abroad to whole-degree experience, we expect to enthuse more students and parents to take this opportunity and be change agents who will strive in the midst of change.
