Module Title Design Practice 2

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Adam Garbutt

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have
applied them?

I didnt develop as many skills as I did in the first design practice module of level 5. Mostly because It
wasnt as hands on, not as much screen printing or crafting. However, what I did do, I did improve on.
Crafting the main elements for studio brief 2 was a new experience, Id never spray-painted before, or
halftone screen-printed. Although I didnt develop any real new skills, I was able to improve on ones I
currently possess and combine them with other skills allowing me to apply them to my practice in a
different way as I had before. I used what Id learned from screen-printing and paper crafting to allow
me to put together my events listings leaflet effectively and efficiently.

My digital mock-up skills came into practice again with studio brief 2 where it was more important
then ever to get across the concept in a crit. Creating mock-ups really helped me solidify my idea
before I went ahead with it, and this didnt just apply to digital mock-ups, as this was just as important
with physical ones too.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they
informed your design development process?

Creating mock-ups really helped inform my design and development process more then ever in
Studio brief 2 and 1. Especially studio brief 2 where knowing what I was creating before I designed it
helped me understand how the design was going to work and fit together. However this didnt just
apply to creating mock-ups out of nets, printing of my design for Studio Brief 3s movie poster really
helped me see what needed to be changed with my design and where else I needed to improve it.
Seeing it in the flesh is a much different experience to seeing it on screen and this really helped
develop and inform how I designed and constructed the design for it.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I think my crafting and mocking up is a strength that really shone through this module and I think its
one that Ive come to develop throughout the past year. I think this was helped by the fact that I bought
my own crafting tools such as sewing needles, long arm stapler and more. This will certainly help me
throughout 3
rd
year where I can quickly put together a mock-up before crits and for final pieces where I
can capitalise on this the most.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I didnt take control of blogging in this module, and It came back around to bite me, although I was
ahead with my work and development. I didnt blog it effectively, this is a down turn for me and I
think it been down to other modules taking over later towards February. I was ahead with it
throughout all of the first semester and I let it get on top of me throughout this one. Which Im really
disappointed in my self with most of all. The only way I can address this is by setting by some time
in the morning and afternoon everyday like I used to just get on with it, thats the only way Im going
to be able to address it.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing
these?

1. Blog as I go, that way it wont get snow ball into me at the end.
2. Dont spend so long on the concept, so I dont get behind when it comes to making.
3. Create more development sheets to get my ideas down and not forget them so I dont have to rethink
them all over.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an x)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor
1 2 3 4 5
Attendance 5
Punctuality 5
Motivation 4
Commitment 4
Quantity of work produced 4
Quality of work produced 4
Contribution to the group 4
The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage
of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation
fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self
evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
