To Whom It May Concern,

This letter is in support of my application for the Data Manager position at UCSF. I am excited about
this position because I feel that this job closely aligns with my interests and future directions. I feel that
this would be a good position to allow me to utilize my past research experiences as well as the
technical skills acquired during my studies at Johns Hopkins University.

In May 2009, I completed my Masters of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins. While attending
Johns Hopkins, I focused primarily on biostatistics and the use of biostatistics to evaluate health
outcomes. During my studies I finished a capstone project analyzing time to event data in
approximately 1000 patients at four single nucleotide polymorphisms of interest for potential
development of a heart condition. I designed many of the analysis techniques based on journal articles
as well as my prior research in genetics.

The majority of this analysis was done with Stata and I feel very confident in my Stata abilities. I also
did part of the capstone project in R and did smaller projects using SAS and feel comfortable using all
three of these packages.

Prior to Johns Hopkins I worked in three different molecular genetics laboratories and worked on a
variety of methods related to sequencing and gene expression. While working in the laboratory jobs I
used a variety of other statistical and analysis platforms to evaluate data. I am confident in my abilities
to rapidly learn and improve my knowledge of analysis on a variety of data sets.

I also worked for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Namibia and was responsible for creating a
community-based education group tasked with teaching about HIV/AIDS in rural communities
surrounding a hospital. I was forced to rapidly adjust to a limited resource setting and to effectively
work with a group that had varying levels of education. I developed a database using Filemaker for
tracking patients enrolled on ARV medication and allowing doctors, nurses, and pharmacists their own
level of database access.

I have a unique background which I believe makes me a uniquely qualified candidate for this position. I
look forward to the opportunity to contribute to various projects and be involved with many different
areas of research in the field of environmental health. I am also fluent in Spanish. I have also attached
my resume and look forward to discussing my qualifications with you.

I can be reached by phone at +1 (530) 601-6189 or email zstednic@jhsph.edu

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Zach Stednick
