Sometimes you just need a little something something to cover your shoulders.

Here's a very stylish solution a quick knit, shawl-collared shrug! It features a textured,
open rib stitch contrasted with a 2x2 ribbed, chic shawl-collar. Ribbed cap sleeves finish
the look.

This seamless design begins with the back, which is knit from the bottom up. Then,
stitches are picked up around the rest of the edges and the remainder of the shrug is knit
in the round.

Short rows are used to give the shawl-collar its great shape and to create the little cap
sleeves that finish off the armholes.

NOTES
1) Instructions are written for the smallest size, with instructions for the larger sizes in
parentheses, respectively. PLEASE go through the pattern first, highlighting or
circling ALL instructions that are for the size you are knitting. This will help
avoid any size confusion as you are knitting.
2) Because of Note 1 above, you may see this: -- (--, --, --, 204, 220, 236) sts. The -
-just means that that instruction is not applicable for those sizes, i.e. this instruction
only applies to sizes 1X, 2X, and 3X. You will also see a header in the instructions
that says For Sizes 1X, 2X, and 3X ONLY:, which is to further clarify.
3) This shrug is knit all in one piece. First, the BACK is knit from the bottom up, then
sts are picked up and cast on all around to form the CIRCULAR BAND that will make
up the fronts, shoulders, and shawl collar. Armholes will be created when the
CIRCULAR BAND is first established. Lastly, the cap sleeves are picked up around
each armhole and knit.
4) cast on X sts = use the Single cast-on (also called the Backward-loop cast-on)
method to CO sts for the armholes when you start working the CIRCULAR BAND.

KNITTING THE SHRUG
BEGIN WITH BACK
With larger circular needle, CO 54 (62, 70, 78, 86, 94, 102) sts.

Row 1 [WS]: K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end. AT THE SAME TIME, place a split-ring st
marker (OR safety pin, so it can be removed later) after the 28th (32nd, 36th, 40th, 44th,
48th, 52nd) st at the cast-on edge (not on your knitting needle, as this marker will not be
moving up from row to row, but will remain at the cast-on edge).
Row 2 [RS]: Work Row 1 of Open Lace Rib to end.

Armhole Shaping:
Row 3 [WS Dec 2]: Skp, p2, *k2, p2; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2tog = 52 (60, 68, 76,
84, 92, 100) sts.
Row 4 [RS Dec 2]: K2tog, k1, work Row 3 of Open Lace Rib to last 3 sts, k1, skp = 50
(58, 66, 74, 82, 90, 98) sts.

CIRCULAR BAND
Turn work upside down, with RS facing you.

NOTE: When picking up sts along the cast-on edge, pick up one st per cast-on st so ribs will
line up.

Pick up and knit 26 (30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50) sts to the first corner;
CO 34 (34, 38, 38, 42, 42, 46) sts (this is for the RIGHT front armhole, using the single

work 46 (54, 62, 70, 78, 86, 94) sts from needle in Row 3 (1, 1, 3, 3, 1, 1) of Open Lace

CO 34 (34, 38, 38, 42, 42, 46) sts (this is for the LEFT front armhole; use the single cast-on
method);
then starting at last corner of cast-on edge, pick up and knit 28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52)
sts along the cast-on edge back to the st marker = 168 (184, 208, 224, 248, 264, 288) sts.

Remove st marker from cast-on edge.

Add a st marker (Color A = ___________ ) to mark beg of rnd and join in the rnd.
Remember to now follow Open Lace Rib as worked in the rnd, not rows.
Rnd 1: Work Rnd 4 (2, 2, 4, 4, 2, 2) of Open Lace Rib to st marker, skipping the final p2.
Rnd 2: Work Rnd 1 (3, 3, 1, 1, 3, 3) of Open Lace Rib to st marker, skipping the final p2.
Rnd 3: Work Rnd 2 (4, 4, 2, 2, 4, 4) of Open Lace Rib to st marker, skipping the final p2.
Rnd 4: Work Rnd 3 (1, 1, 3, 3, 1, 1) of Open Lace Rib to st marker, skipping the final p2.
Rnds 5 through 8: Rep last 4 rnds.

For Sizes XS and S ONLY:
Rnds 9 through 11: Rep Rnds 1 though 3.
For Size M ONLY:
Rnds 9 through 13: Rep Rnds 1 though 4, then rep Rnd 1 again.
For Sizes L and 1X ONLY:
Rnds 9 through 15: Rep Rnds 1 though 4, then rep Rnds 1 through 3 again.
For Size 2X ONLY:
Rnds 9 through 17: Rep Rnds 1 though 4 twice, then rep Rnd 1 again.
For Size 3X ONLY:
Rnds 9 through 19: Rep Rnds 1 though 4 twice, then rep Rnds 1 through 3 again.

For ALL SIZES AGAIN:
Change to smaller circular needle and switch to 2x2 Ribbing:
Next 3 (3, 3, 3, 5, 5, 5) Rnds: *P2, k2; rep from * around.

CREATE SHAWL COLLAR
Use Short Rows to create the Shawl Collar. Instead of working in the rnd, you will be
working Short Rows.

Reset row counter to 0.
NOTES:
1) wrapped sts are the stitches that get yarn wrapped around them to prevent holes
in your knitting when you are working short rows. Just follow the specific instructions
in note 4 below to "wrap and turn".
2) yb = yarn back, i.e. move the yarn to the back (as if you are about to knit).
3) yf = yarn forward, i.e. move the yarn to the front (as if you are about to purl).
4) W&T = "wrap and turn":
After a purl st: yb, sl next st purlwise, yf, sl st back to left needle, turn work to
begin working in opposite direction.
After a knit st: yf, sl next st purlwise, yb, sl st back to left needle, turn work to
begin working in opposite direction.
5) In this next row, place 2 st markers (pmB) for working the short rows, using a
different color (Color B = ___________ ) than the beg-of-rnd marker.
6) When counting sts just worked, do NOT count the "wrapped" stitch.
