Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.

SECTION 1
Part I - Analysis of the Problem
In every civilization, there are going
to be some problems. Regenwald is
no exception. Here are some of the
problems of food and water that this
great town must withstand.
1. Fruits are plentiful on the trees
of Regenwald, but that doesnt mean

that the people can eat them. Some of the fruits
may be poisonous, and the alternative is to hunt
the animals in the area to extinction. If that hap-
pens, this civilization would die out really fast.
And importing food would be expensive and dif-
cult.
2. A river and waterfall ow through Regen-
wald, so there would be a plentiful supply of
freshwater, right? Well, no, it is unknown if the
water is pure or disease-ridden. Also, if a dam is
built to store water that has been puried, it could
disrupt the ecosystem. This would cause the food
to run out even faster.
Part II - Proposed Solutions
For a community to
prosper, it needs to be
able to change its envi-
ronment to t its
needs. Modication is
when a civilization
changes the land-
scape around them to t their own needs. For ex-
ample, if there isnt enough food to feed your peo-
ple, you would clear space to plant crops. Or if
there was a fear of enemy attacks, then you could
build a big wall around your city. A community
that can not modify its environment is a commu-
nity that will not survive.
A modication that was made to help the peo-
ple survive was to heat buckets of water from the

waterfall to the boiling point. This killed all the
bacteria in the water. Then they strained it with a
ne mesh made from banana leaves. After it was
clean, they wrapped banana leaves around the top
to make it waterproof, and dunked it back in the
waterfall to chill it. Therefore, they had chilled,
fresh, water to drink.
By seeing what fruits the native animals eat,
and which ones they steer clear of, the people can
nd non-poisonous fruits to eat. By only shing
or hunting a little, the people of Regenwald can
eat sustainably and not run out of food. If they es-
tablish colonies upstream, it would be easy to ship
food down the river on barges, so nobody would
starve. This method of colonizing is still in use to-
day, just on a much larger scale. For example, peo-
ple in California get food from all over the world.
Other countries and states get food from, and ship
food around the world.
