LEADERSHIP IN BLOGGING & ONLINE COMMUNITIES

A blogger since 2000 (http://mistersugar.com), I have been an active leader and promoter of local and regional
blogging communities, frequently speaking about blogging and online communication to media professionals. I
am the creator of BlogTogether, the Triangle-region community of bloggers, and in that role I have organized
and facilitated numerous social activities and educational events to promote new media skills and community
building through events that unite online acquaintances.

ScienceOnline (Jan 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007)

This annual conference gathers an international audience to North Carolina to explore strategies, tools and
techniques for promoting science on the Web. ScienceOnline2010 was a four-day conference that attracted 275
scientists, educators, students, bloggers, and journalists from across North Carolina, other states and half a
dozen other countries. My earlier proposal for a web initiative to cover the science, medicine and technology in
the Triangle led to the creation of Science in the Triangle (http://scienceinthetriangle.org), now an important
element of the ScienceOnline conference. I am also a member of the board of directors of Science
Communicators on North Carolina.

Other events
• The Long Table – an initiative to promote good food and leisurely conversations. (Sept 2009)
• Food Blogging Dinner with Michael Ruhlman (Sept 2007)

“The Web has evolved into a tribal Internet of passionate bloggers like Zuiker, and he has become a sort-of local brand.
He's a quiet visionary. He's a low-key doer. He's a let's-get-together-and-see-where-this-goes guy. It's the Zuikers of this
new, interwoven world who may play a significant role in determining how far Web 2.0 goes from being a sociable
network to a social force.” — Dan Barkin, News & Observer editor, http://tr.im/IwXv
