With the Bromma all electric adjustable twinlift Spreader YTS45E
a larger percentage of above-deck containers can be transported
in twinlift mode. The twinlift spreader can move two 20 foot
containers from a spacing of 0 to 1.6 metres (0 to 5 foot) under
full load while suspended under the twistlocks.
Two containers can be moved synchronised towards one another
and apart from one another. The movements can be done at
anytime in the crane cycle and are mechanically controlled to be
symmetrical. There is no stopping time to change the container
spacing.
The telescopic spreader YTS45E is of rectangular frame construc-
tion enabling easy location on containers. The spreader is as
standard equipped with 4 x 10 tonnes lifting lugs in the corners
of the end beams for heavy lifts and for handling damaged
containers.
The design with recessed end beams makes handling of lashing
frames and hatch covers possible. All motions of the spreader are
controlled from the drivers cab and there are provisions made for
signals in the cab indicating the position of the twistlocks and
landing pin status.
All movements of the YTS45E are electrically driven. This means
that the speader is silent and consumes energy only when moving.
Made of high quality steel, the standard YTS45E spreader provides
high lifting capacity with a low nominal tare weight thanks to
the box design of the telescoping beams and the main frame.
The spreader is designed in accordance with DIN 15018 H
2
B
4
. All
components can be easily assembled, adjusted, removed and are
accessible for inspection and maintenance.
The spreader comes with the SCS
3
Spreader Control System,
reducing and preventing downtime through improvements in
the area of electrical connections. It will also shorten downtime
through faster spreader fault diagnostics.

The two telescopic beam units run on maintenance-free
roller bearings, one at each bottom corner of the main frame
and one at each top end of the telescopic beams. Glide
plates are mounted at each lower end of the telescopic
beams. This ensures low friction and a smooth movement
when telescoping.

This system stops accurately in all positions. It is durable and
strong but has low weight, is easy to maintain and has long
service intervals. The telescoping positions are controlled by
an absolute encoder placed on one of the gearboxes.
0 to 1.6 meters
Two 20 foot containers can be moved apart from 0 to 1.6
meters under full load. The movement can be done at any-
time in the crane cycle, which means there is no stopping
time to change the container spacing.
TELESCOPING SYSTEM
TELESCOPIC DRIVE SYSTEM
The telescopic system is driven by means of two electric
motors with gearboxes connected to an endless chain. The
motors are equipped with a built in brake which holds the
spreader in position during operation. The chain is ftted
with a Bromma design shock absorber at both ends. The
shock absorber is designed to dampen the effects of impact
on the spreader structure and components due to loads im-
posed to the spreader ends.
The telescoping systems ability of absorbing extreme loads
mechanically provides the end user with a highly reliable
spreader with increased life even under extreme load condi-
tions.
The fexibility in the system allows small changes in
spreader length when handling distorted containers.

ADJUSTABLE TWINLIFT SYSTEM
The main frame is ftted with four retractable foating twist-
lock housings for handling two twenty foot containers si-
multaneously. The twinlift units move simultaneously in
pairs, keeping the distance to each end beam to separate or
retract two 20 foot containers between 0 and 1.6 meters.
The movement is achieved by an electric motor/gearbox
placed centrally on the main frame. The force is distributed
to each side by a shaft across the main frame. The shaft
TWINLIFT SYSTEM
is equipped with a chain wheel at each end.
These chain wheels drive an endless chain at
both sides, to which the twinlift units are at-
tached. The position of the twinlift boxes is con-
trolled by an absolute encoder placed on one of
the chain wheels.
The twinlift units run on both glide plates and
steel wheels.
The twinlift system is designed in such a way
that certain irregularities between the two 20 foot
containers are accepted as swown below.

Max. 6 cm
Max. 13 cm
Max. 1.5 cm when containers are lifted
TWINLIFT UNITS
The twistlock housing in each twinlift unit can be raised
and lowered by means of an electric motor on top of the
twinlift unit. The motor shaft passes through a guide plate
and is connected to an arm. The arm has a trunnion which is
connected to a damper. The lower end of the damper is con-
nected to the twistlock housing. The vertical movement of
the twistlock housing is guided by slots in the side plates of
the twinlift unit.
The twinlift twistlocks are maneuvred by a separate electric
motor, which is connected to the twistlock arm by a draw
bar. An analog switch indicates the locked and unlocked po-
sitions. The switch also ensures that the motor is stopped in
correct location at each end position.
A spring loaded landing pin near each twistlock is pushed
up into the twistlock housing when the spreader is landed
on the container. The twistlocks can only be turned when all
the corners of the spreader are landed.

TWISTLOCK SYSTEM
GUIDE ARMS
The spreader is equipped with four fxed guide arms to
guide the spreader onto the container. These are located one
at each end of the long side of the spreader. The guide arms
are fastened by means of bolts and nuts on a slotted adaptor.
The bolts can be slided out of the slot if sheared off. Several
guide arm combinations are available.

Blocking key
Four twistlocks are located in the corners of the spreader to
engage and lift the container.
The twistlocks are manoeuvred by a helical-worm geared
motor, which is connected to the twistlock arms by two draw
bars. Two switches indicate the locked and unlocked posi-
tions. The switches also ensure that the motor is stopped in
correct location at each end position.
A spring loaded landing pin near each twistlock is pushed up
into the twistlock housing and activates a proximity switch
when the spreader is landed on the container. The twistlocks
can only be turned when all the corners of the spreader are
landed. At the same time, the blocking key is moved high
enough so the blocking stop on the twistlock lever arm pass-
es underneath it. During hoisting the landing pin is in the
down position and prevents the twistlock from turning.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The power required to operate the spreaders electrical
components is obtained from the crane. All electrical com-
ponents on the spreader are designed to withstand loads im-
posed during container handling operations and suitable for
a marine environment.
The electrical components are mounted in a stainless steel
cabinet, IP 67. All cables are well protected in cable chains.
The spreader is supplied with CANopen slave units. This
enhances the possibility of monitoring each I/O point and
reduces the number of cables needed and the replacement
time for connecting sensors and actuators to the controls.
CANopen box
The spreader has a control voltage of 24 V DC.
The electrical safety features to protect and ensure proper
handling of containers are as follows:

Spreader cannot be hoisted unless all four twistlocks are

fully Locked or Unlocked. (Provided the crane con-
trols have a hoist permit safety circuit.)

Spreader twistlocks can only be Locked or Un-

locked when all four corners are properly seated on a
container or hatch cover.
MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
SCS
3
For monitoring and diagnosing the YTS45E is equipped
with the SCS
3
Spreader Control System. The SCS
3
can con-
nect to a wide variety of host controllers including PLCs
and PC-based control systems.
The rugged SCS
3
control unit is a computer that is equipped
with a touch screen and mounted on the spreader for easy
access. Monitoring and diagnostics can be available in dif-
ferent ways; on the screen, on the crane, via an external PC
or a handheld computer.
The SCS
3
system delivers advanced monitoring and diag-
nostic information, which means that service staff can re-
act faster to fault events. Instead of investigating possible
sources of fault events one by one, the SCS
3
gives service
technicians specifc, precise information, enabling them to
quickly solve the problems occurred.
The SCS
3
system simplifes handling of the spreader and
prevents fault events. It also eliminates or minimizes junc-
tion boxes, terminal strips, and relays areas where wire
breakage is common. Conventional wiring is reduced.
