The students selected are nursing students who are going to work in USA.

There will be 6 months of English course, two meeting per week.
d. Objectives: the main objectives of the course are (1) to improve students level of English in the
area of their profession (2) they would then gain enough confidence to approach the language used
in nursing homes and hospitals and be able to present themselves as very possible candidates for
employment

II. Four basic aspects in preparing the course
a. Material Design
Materials can be in many different forms. It can be in coursebook, handouts.
1. Relate the teaching materials to the aims and objectives
It is very important that the teaching materials used should take the learner forward as directly
as possible toward the objectives. The objective decided first in line with the overall aim of the
teaching program and then materials can be searched out relate to these objectives.

4. Consider the relationship between language, learning process and the learner.

The model of designing materials proposed by Hutckinson consists of four elements:

In ESP there are three basic types of assessment:
1. Placement test used to place learners in the ESP course most suited to their needs
2. Achievement test to see how well the learner is keeping up with the syllabus and can be
administered any time through the course
3. Proficiency test to assess whether or not the student can cope with the demands of a particular
situation.
Dudley-Evans and John (42-45)
1. Cooperation is the first stage and involves the language teacher taking the initiative in asking
questions and gathering information about the students subject course, how English fits into their
course and what the department and students see as priorities.
2. Collaboration involves the more direct working together of the two sides, language and subject, to
prepare students for particular tasks or course.
3. Team teaching is the actual working together in the classroom of the subject and language
specialists.

Ken Hyland (2006. P. 86-87).
1. Co-operation refers to the use of subject teachers as specialist informants who can provide
information about texts, course assignment and the conceptual and discoursal framework of the
discipline
2. Collaboration is further along the involvement continuum and refers to the direct working together
of language and subject teacher outside the classroom.
3. Team-teaching involves the closest engagement with the subject discipline as subject and EAP
teachers work together in the same classroom.

1. Both the definition agree that subject teacher is the key informant for the initial step to supply
information through what things should be dealt first, course concept, discourse and its framework
that need to be executed by the language teacher.

Majority of the students want to improve their speaking and writing skills in nursing area, they said
that it is really difficult to communicate in English. Some of them want to improve their vocabulary
and some of the students want to improve their pronunciation as well.

Ask them about their free schedule and general information about their job requirements, for
example they may response that they want this course on mon-tues, and they can only spare time
about 2 hours per meeting.
