Finger Tracing
Students practice tracing the letters in the air. Write it big, small, slowly quickly. Write it with
your nose, toes, elbow, bum etc.
Point to the letter
Put 2+ letters on different sides of the room. Tell the students you are going to say a word and
the students should point to the letter which that word begins with.
Chinese whispers
Guess the letter
Slowly write a letter on the board. Students guess what letter it is. Vary by showing students a
letter, they write it on the board and the rest of the class guess what letter it is.
Writing on backs
Musical Statues
Play some upbeat music. When the music stops, students freeze. Say a letter. What letter is it?
What sound does it make? What word begins with _? Start the music again.
Musical chairs
Place alphabet flashcards on or under childrens chairs. Play a song the children can sing as
they march around the chairs (ABC song). When the music stops, children sit on the nearest
chair and pick up the flashcard from underneath. Ask a few random students what letter it is,
what sound and what words they know.
Alphabet flashcard sounds
Lay 4 alphabet flashcards on the floor, make the sound of one. Student identifies then changes
place with the teacher.
