TYPE 2 DIABETES
Guide to remedy the problem
It is a commonly held belief that there is no cure for Type 2 Diabetes.
That all changed following a successful university trial in 2011 that
highlighted a remedy and this was achieved by most of the
participants.
I have adapted this procedure to produce a remedy that can be
achieved by most people and at no cost. The addition of an over-the-
counter all-in-one supplement of vitamins and minerals, of your choice,
is highly recommended but these are inexpensive.
In fact, during the course of this procedure, you will save money
because of the lesser impact on the higher end of food cost with your
regular shopping.
The procedure is a one-off. It is limited to a period of 8 weeks during
which you carry on with your usual routine. It does not involve surgery
or drugs simply follow this guide
It is all explained in this publication Type 2 Diabetes How to reverse
the problem
Background
The modern increase of Type 2 Diabetes cases is well known to be
associated with diet. The seeds of the problem were sown in the
1980s when it was decided in the U.S that healthy diets should avoid
fat. This resulted in an increase in carbohydrate and sugar intake to
compensate for loss of flavour and substance. This also heralded the
rise of trans fats (unsaturated fats) in processed foods and prepared
meals. These are now banned in some countries and some states of
the U.S.
Meanwhile, the spread of refined carbohydrates in many vegetarian
cultures heightened the problem as these rapidly convert into blood
sugar more rapidly and can increase appetite.

2
The Problem
The inherent systems in our bodies have been conditioned for millennia
to protect us from starvation. This conditioning is still with us today and
nobody knows how long, if at all, our bodies will change to meet the
problems of many modern diets. Our excess protein is taken into the
system rather than rejected, then stored in our system in readiness for
starvation whether it comes or not. In this endeavour to save our lives,
it will do so even if it kills us and it often does.
The body needs to secret insulin in order to disperse sugar in the blood
(blood glucose) that has not been otherwise absorbed in the system so
the higher levels of blood sugar require equally higher levels of insulin.
Insulin is secreted from the pancreas. Modern diets tend to produce
too much sugar either through sugary foods or carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are converted into blood sugar and these, along with
sugary foods and drinks stay in the bloodstream. All unabsorbed blood
glucose is converted into fat.
From a diabetes point of view, the problem is where the fat is stored in
our system. Not all obese people have Type 2 diabetes. We are at risk
when the fat is stored around the organs that are required to release
the insulin (pancreas) and/or absorb the glucose (liver) or burn off with
exercise (muscle cells). The surplus insulin in the system usually leads
to an increased appetite and so aggravates the problem.
Exercise is not an efficient way of losing weight unless you are prepared
to devote a few hours every day to it. The most efficient method is to
get the body to burn off the viscous (internal) fat around our organs
which hinder the release of insulin. So the fat is attacked from the inside
where it lodges.
Initial Remedies
Currently the way of treating Type 2 Diabetes is to negate the
symptoms by prescribing a medication such as Metformin in tablet
form to be taken 3 times a day, usually with meals. Obviously this is not
a remedy and such medication is usually assumed to be necessary for
the rest of the patients life. Because this adds a large financial burden
on the family, if there is no state assistance, it is often ignored and so
leads to an otherwise premature death.
It became noticed that when some people who suffered from Type 2
Diabetes but co-incidentally had gastric bands fitted because of chronic
obesity their diabetes condition was cured. This was attributed to the
internal fat being removed in the course of the surgery. It appears,
therefore, that surgery of this type is likely to be successful in the long
term so long as it is accompanied by a mindset to alter some of the
eating habits in the future.
In 2011, there was a trial conducted by Newcastle University.
Participants took part in a short term calorie restricted diet over an eight
week period. It had a 64% success rate with people taken from a cross
section of society. It was based upon using meal replacement products
instead of meals with some additional vegetable intake.
The Programme
Unfortunately, these meal replacement products are expensive when
taken over the 8 week period, so I have devised a plan in which people
can participate without any expense. However, as mentioned, again I
strongly recommend taking one over the counter vitamin + mineral
supplement each day.
Also, and this is not a requirement, if the participant can start by
reducing down from higher levels of obesity (e.g. within the outer limits
of their Body Mass Index) then the overall chance of success will be
increased substantially more than 64%.
3
TYPE 2 DIABETES Guide to remedy the problem
4
Method
The remedy is to reduce the calorie intake into the system by limiting
this to 660 calories per day for a period of 8 weeks. After that, the
participant assumes a normal life, subject to a few precautions (see
later). Newcastle University described their diet as limiting it to 800
calories per day, allocating 600 of these to the food supplements and
200 to 250 green non-leguminous vegetables.
However, the non-leguminous green vegetables are likely to produce
only 60 calories per day, not 200. Also, we preferred not to use the
powders but natural food. Apart from the cost, it helps more to give a
feeling of satisfaction and so helps ease the hunger (see the Suggested
Meal Plans in Appendix 1). This does work, see My Case Study
(Appendix 2).
Before we start
The programme is not suitable for the following:
Persons suffering from any other form of illness including Type 1
diabetes
People whose medication for Type 2 diabetes is by way of injections
Anyone on medication (or should be on medication) inconsistent
with calorie reduction
Pregnant women and persons under 18 years of age
It is always advisable to consult your doctor before starting, as an
added precaution.
Remember to stop your diabetes tablets after the first week of the
programme or you may get hypo sensations. If you are still not feeling
well or experience unusual thirst, stop the programme and consult your
doctor.
TYPE 2 DIABETES Guide to remedy the problem
Next, you are advised you to work out a meal plan of your choice. This
is entirely a numbers exercise you can eat what you like so long as
the calorie intake does not exceed 660 per day and carbs are
restricted to a weekly allowance.
Appendix 3 lists a few common foods noting their calorie content. As
well as noting a few worthwhile ones, it also highlights some products
to be avoided It is recommended that you consult a more
comprehensive guide such as the Calorie Carb + Fat Bible, published
by Weight Loss Resources Ltd.
Appendix 1 is an assortment of suggestions for a meal plan that has
been successfully used in this programme.
When you start
Avoid fat, sugars (except in fruit) prepared meals (except some
soups) and limit carbohydrates to a weekly allowance of whole
grain porridge oats as per the Meal Plan no more than 3 mornings a
week.
Plan your meals in advance with reference to the calorie + carb.
chart or other reference guide
Avoid fruit except the suggested apple in the morning (see
Appendix 1)
Eat only vegetables that are harvested above the ground (except
pulses pears)
Eat three meals a day the body needs this or it will work against
you, thinking it needs to store fat until the next meal comes along
Drink coffee or tea to boost your metabolism. It helps to burn fat.
Anyway, try to intake a total of 3 litres of liquid per day, in total, for all
liquids, not just water.
You can snack without limit on raw celery sticks but raw carrot has
21 calories and 29 carbs per 75grams
5
TYPE 2 DIABETES Guide to remedy the problem
6
Warm water is good for stifling the feeling of hunger
Soup from Oxo cubes or low calorie packet soups.
Alcohol will be like everything else, it will count towards your daily
ration but it is not recommended.
Hint; See how useful celeriac is. Very low on calories and carbs but
the texture of the large bulb is like potato with a flavour of spinach. The
tops are tasty too.
You may experience some headaches or even dizziness in the first
week and, of course, hunger. Avoid any heavy manual work especially
lifting during the programme.
Try to keep yourself busy to keep the mind off food!
When the programme has finished
Then have a blood test. The chances are that your Type2 Diabetes has
reversed. (if not, then resume your medication; do not re-start the
programme for another 3 months).
Now you can eat your normal recommended daily calorie intake but
certain foods should be avoided on a regular basis i.e. processed
carbs especially when mixed with fat or oil, processed meat products,
dairy produce and sugar products. This is not a diet but the basis for
any sensible eating, the lack of which caused the problem in the first
place. I call it a regimen because the word diet has been hijacked to
mean something unpleasant. So, once a week go out and eat what you
like, I did.
Probably, in the first 7/10 days, you will put on a few pounds. Your
body weight has found a new level, a new platform. Try to keep it
there. If you go over that new platform by 6 pounds or so, you will now
find it easier to get back there with a short sharp diet so long as you act
fairly quickly. After 18 months, I was still free of diabetes and never
looked back.
TYPE 2 DIABETES Guide to remedy the problem
Ongoing
Avoid processed carbs and processed meat products.
Limit the intake of fat, sugars (except in fruit) prepared meals (except
some soups) and limit carbohydrates to a weekly allowance of
whole grain porridge oats as per the Meal Plan no more than 3
mornings a week.
Limit your intake of potatoes to the size of a fist on your plate and
limit that to waxy boiled potatoes. Sometimes use boiled carrots
instead and remember the celeriac!
Limit your intake of bread in the house, use crispbread.
Bulk up on vegetables as much as you are happy with
There are many more tips out there
But dont be unsociable at a dinner party or evening out, just enjoy
yourself.

Robin aged 68 years went on the programme in the summer of 2011.
He had been diagnosed with Type2 diabetes 6 years earlier.
He measured 5 9 and weighed 13stone having lost 3lbs on a
conventional diet in readiness to put himself into the swing before
commencing. He did not look fat and was within his Body Mass Index
so he was one of the thin out fat in types.
He took 500 mg of Metformin 3 times a day with every meal
He had purchased a book referencing a comprehensive guide to
calories and carbs then set about devising his own meal plan keeping
to the numbers (see Appendices 1 and 3).
Before he started, his blood sugar level was 6.9 mmol/1 measured
between meals and he weighed 12stone 5lbs. He stopped taking his
medication after 7 days. Eight weeks later he stopped the course and
two weeks after that his blood sugar was laboratory tested and found
to be 6.3 mmol/1 actually lower than when he was on medication.
His weight steadily dropped, quickly at first, and then slowly to 10stone
7lb after 6 weeks then it dropped no further. He had lost 26 pounds.
18 months later his weight had leveled out to 11stone 2lbs but the
diabetic condition had never returned.

Diet reverses Type 2 Diabetes
A Newcastle University team has discovered that Type 2 diabetes can
be reversed by an extreme low calorie diet alone.
Affecting two and half million people in the UK and on the increase
Type 2 diabetes is a long-term condition caused by too much glucose,
a type of sugar, in the blood.
In an early stage clinical trial of 11 people, funded by Diabetes UK, all
reversed their diabetes by drastically cutting their food intake to just
600 calories a day for two months. And three months later, seven
remained free of diabetes.
Professor Roy Taylor of Newcastle University who led the study and
also works for The Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust said: To have people free of diabetes after years with the
condition is remarkable - and all because of an eight week diet.
This is a radical change in understanding Type 2 diabetes. It will
change how we can explain it to people newly diagnosed with the
condition. While it has long been believed that someone with Type 2
diabetes will always have the disease, and that it will steadily get worse,
we have shown that we can reverse the condition.
Research revealed today at the American Diabetes Association
conference and published in Diabetologia transforms thinking on
diabetes. It demonstrates that people who go on a very low calorie diet
can remove fat which is clogging up the pancreas allowing normal
insulin secretion to be restored.
Traditionally, it has been thought that as a progressive condition, Type 2
diabetes can be controlled by diet initially then tablets, but may
eventually require insulin injections.
Type 2 diabetes, which was once known as adult-onset diabetes, is
now found in young adults and children. It is caused by too much
glucose in the blood due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin
- a hormone which breaks down glucose into energy in the cells or
due to the body not reacting to it, known as insulin sensitivity.
APPENDIX 4
Newcastle University Press Release
TYPE 2 DIABETES Guide to remedy the problem
The result of the diet
Under close supervision of a medical team, 11 people who had
developed diabetes later in life were put on an extreme diet of just 600
calories a day consisting of liquid diet drinks and non-starchy
vegetables. They were matched to a control group of people without
diabetes and then monitored over eight weeks. Insulin production from
their pancreas and fat content in the liver and pancreas were studied.
After just one week, the Newcastle University team found that their pre-
breakfast blood sugar levels had returned to normal.
A special MRI scan of their pancreas revealed that the fat levels in the
pancreas had returned from an elevated level to normal (from around
8% to 6%). In step with this, the pancreas regained the normal ability
to make insulin and as a result, blood sugar after meals steadily
improved.
The volunteers were then followed-up three months later. During this
time they had returned to eating normally but had received advice on
portion size and healthy eating. Of the ten people re-tested, seven
remained free of diabetes.
We believe this shows that Type 2 diabetes is all about energy balance
in the body, explained Professor Taylor, if you are eating more than
you burn, then the excess is stored in the liver and pancreas as fat
which can lead to Type 2 diabetes in some people. What we need to
examine further is why some people are more susceptible to
developing diabetes than others.
Dr Iain Frame, Director of Research at Diabetes UK, said: We welcome
the results of this research because it shows that Type 2 diabetes can
be reversed, on a par with successful surgery without the side effects.
However, this diet is not an easy fix and Diabetes UK strongly
recommends that such a drastic diet should only be undertaken under
medical supervision. Despite being a very small trial, we look forward to
future results particularly to see whether the reversal would remain in
the long term.
I no longer needed my diabetes tablets
15
TYPE 2 DIABETES Guide to remedy the problem
16
Gordon Parmley, 67, from Stocksfield in Northumberland took part in
the trial. He said: I love playing golf but I was finding that when I was
out on the course sometimes my vision would go fuzzy and I would
have trouble focusing. It was after this that I was diagnosed with Type 2
diabetes. That was about six years ago and from then on, I had to
control the diabetes with a daily combination of tablets - the diabetes
drug, gliclazide and tablets for my cholesterol.
When my doctor mentioned the trial I thought I would give it a go as it
might help me and other diabetics. I came off my tablets and had three
diet shakes a day and some salad or vegetables but it was very, very
difficult and Im not sure Id have done it without the support of my wife
who went on a diet alongside me.
At first the hunger was quite severe and I had to distract myself with
something else walking the dog, playing golf or doing anything to
occupy myself and take my mind off food but I lost an astounding
amount of weight in a short space of time.
At the end of the trial, I was told my insulin levels were normal and
after six years, I no longer needed my diabetes tablets. Still today, 18
months on, I dont take them. Its astonishing really that a diet hard as
it was could change my health so drastically. After six years of having
diabetes I can tell the difference - I feel better, even walking round the
golf course is easier.
