Position Title: Director Business Development

Campus Location: Hobart

Classification: Senior Management

Term: Initial appointment for five years

Date: February 2013


1. POSITION SUMMARY

The University of Tasmania is a research led university that is increasingly
known for the quality and i mpact of its research and its engagement with
Tasmanian, national and international organisations. The Director Business
Development is responsible for driving strategic research and commercial
partnerships, building relationships with key industry, government and
community organisations, in order to help the University to establish research
collaborations.

The Director Business Development will be responsible for driving strategic
research and commercial partnerships and building relationships with key
industry, government and community organisations in order to assist the
University engage more productively with its external stakeholders and
increase external research income. The position will be responsible for
delivering high quality, customer focussed, business development support
services to UTAS staff and stakeholders and for management of intellectual
property (IP) and commercialisation services.

Key objectives of the position are to increase funding for new areas of strategic
research, to develop new collaborative relationships with external research
stakeholders and to develop the Universitys IP assets.


The position is located within the Office of Research Services, Division of the
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research). The appointee may be called on to represent
UTAS in a variety of fora inside and outside the University.


2. SUPERVISION

2.1 Immediate Supervisor

Executive Director, Research Operations

2.2 Direct Reports to This Position

Initially 1 FTE x Business Development Coordinator (HEO 6). Other direct
reports will be determined through the UTAS Professional Services Review.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1 Responsible for establishing a University business development
framework that builds external relationships and delivers increased
income from industry, government and the community.
3.2 To work with senior Divisional and academic staff to drive the
engagement related goals of the Universitys strategic research plan.
3.3 Provide leadership, support and strategic advice relating to research
partnerships, IP and commercialisation.
3.4 To initiate and develop productive partnerships with relevant
stakeholders which support major UTAS research funding bids.
3.5 To oversee the continued development and management of UTAS IP
portfolio with the aim of maximising social and economic benefits.
3.6 To enable and/or provide end-to-end commercialisation services.
3.7 To develop and deliver research partnership and IP education training
and programs to UTAS academic and professional staff.
3.8 To provide strategic and business advice regarding major research
contracts and IP transactions.
3.9 To provide high level analysis and reports to Senior Management Team
on the Universitys business development and commercialisation
strategies and outcomes.
3.10 To develop, implement, monitor, evaluate and improve UTAS strategies,
Ordinances, policies and procedures relating to Strategic Research
Partnerships, IP and Commercialisation in order to improve research
funding performance.


4. LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

4.1 The incumbent is expected to perform tasks under the broad direction of the
Executive Director, Research Operations, demonstrating initiative and sound
decision-making. Direction is provided by way of agreed objectives, and
achievement against those objectives will be regularly reviewed in
conjunction with the supervisor.


5. POSITION RELATIONSHIPS

The Director Business Development must relate in an effective way with:

Senior officers of the University, including the DVC (Research), DVC
(Academic), PVC (Global Engagement), the Executive Director: Research
Policy and Strategy
Deans, Heads of School and Directors of Institute
Academic and professional staff
Staff within the Office of the DVCR
Legal Office
Senior representatives of Industry, Government, community and
professional bodies
External service providers (e.g attorneys) relating to IP and
commercialisation


6. SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential


6.1 Postgraduate qualification or equivalent industry experience and/or
tertiary sector experience.

6.2 Demonstrated high-level leadership skills.

6.3 Demonstrated capacity to foster business development and/or IP
commercialisation outcomes across a broad range of academic areas.

6.4 A record of working successfully with a high degree of autonomy to
deliver strategic plans and the associated implementation plans.

6.5 Demonstrated superior organisational skills together with a proven
track record in commercial partnerships, business development and IP
management, complemented by a broad network of high-level
industry and research contacts across multiple sectors.

6.6 Extensive experience in developing and fostering high-level
relationships and partnerships.

6.7 A proven ability to communicate, influence, negotiate and work
effectively with internal and external partners, collaborators and
stakeholders.


Desired

6.8 A deep knowledge of the Australian research funding landscape.

6.9 A deep knowledge of IP issues and commercialisation experience.
