Filet Crochet:
A Vintage
Technique
Filet crochet is created by
forming a mesh fabric in a square
or diamond motif. Some of the
squares are left open and some
are filled to create the shadow-
type design. It is the crochet
adaptation of one of the oldest
forms of lace, called lacis or
filet guipure, known as early as
the l4th century. The original filet
lace was a form of embroidery
worked with a needle on a net
background.
Filet has been popular with
crocheters for many years and
probably was at its peak during
the 1920s, when tablecloths,
bedspreads, doilies and many
womens lingerie pieces were
the height of fashion. Filet
crochet yokes for nightgowns
and edgings for lingerie were
especially popular.
Because it imitated lace, filet
crochet has been traditionally
done in white. To update the look
for todays decorating palette,
we have used color to achieve a
whole new look.
