World No Tobacco Day is May 31, 2014


Manitobans Want More Smoke-Free Outdoor Public Places

Winnipeg,Manitoba(May30,2014)ArecentsurveyfromMANTRA(ManitobaTobaccoReduction
Alliance)conductedbyPrairieResearchAssociatesfindsthatmostManitobanswanttoenjoyoutdoor
patiosandotherpublicplaceswithoutbeingexposedtosecondhandsmoke(SHS).Highlightsfromthe
surveyinclude:
About2in3(67%)supportextendingsmokingbanstooutdoorpatiosofrestaurantsandbars,an
increasefrom58%in2008.
ThemajorityofManitobanssupportextendingabantobeaches(65%),publicparksandgreen
spaces(61%),andoutdoorevents(59%).
Almost8in10Manitobansandmorethanhalfofcurrentsmokersfeelthatsmokingrestrictions
havemadetheircommunityabetterplacetolive.
Despitedownwardtrendsinsmokingratesinrecentyears,informationfromtheCanadianCommunity
HealthSurveyhasshownthatManitobansexposuretosecondhandsmokeinvehiclesandpublicplaces
hasactuallyincreased.
ThisisconcerningbecauseitiswellestablishedthatthereisnosafelevelofexposuretoSHSandeven
briefexposurescanhaveserioushealthconsequences.AccordingtotheCentreforDiseaseControland
Preventionevenbriefexposurescandamagecellsinwaysthatsetthecancerprocessinmotion,trigger
heartattacksinpeoplewithpreexistingheartconditions,andcancauseasthmaattacksinchildren.
PublicsmokingbansarenotjustaboutprotectingpeoplefromSHS.About3in4Manitobasmokers
wouldliketoquitandoneeffectivewayofsupportingtheirquitattemptsistoincreasesmokingbansin
outdoorpublicplaces.Researchshowsthatwhensmokingbansareimplemented,manysmokerschoose
toquitorcutback.
Thereareseveralotherexcellentreasonstobansmokinginoutdoorpublicplacessuchasreducinglitter,
protectingtheenvironment,reducingfireriskanddecreasingnegativerolemodellingforchildren.For


theseandotherreasonsmanycommunities,governmentsandprivatebusinessesacrossCanadahave
chosentomakeoutdoorpublicspacessmokefree.
Despitestrongpublicdemand,hereinManitobatherearefewrestrictionsregardingsmokinginoutdoor
publicplaces.Withspringalreadyuponus,itisimportantforgovernmentsandprivatebusinessesto
meettheneedsoftheManitobansbyactingquickly.
ConsideringthegreatbenefitsofsmokingbansaswellasManitobansstrongsupportforthem,MANTRA
recommendsthefollowingmeasures:
1. AllManitobamunicipalitiesbansmokingonoutdoorpatiosofbarsandrestaurantsandtheCityof
Winnipegtakealeadershiproleininitiatingthisaction.
2. Municipalgovernmentsresponsibleforparksthathavebeachesandplaygroundsfollowthe
provincesleadbybanningsmokingonthem.
3. Festivalorganizersofeventsinoutdoorpublicparksandgreenspacesdeclaretheireventssmoke
free.

Methodology

ThePRAOmnibussurveywasconductedinSeptember2013.InManitoba,800residents18yearsofage
andoverwereinterviewedbytelephoneonarangeofissues.Theoreticalerrorrate+3.5%,19timesout
of20
