Properties

Distributive Property: Distributive property is when you

distribute the number that is not in the parenthesis to each
number that is inside of the parenthesis. For example:
2(5-4)+(6+3) you would distribute the 2 to each number.

Associative Property of Addition/multiplication: The associative

property is when you switch the order of the numbers on each
side of the equal sign without changing the answer. For
example: 7+(8-9)=8+(7-9)

Commutative Property of Addition/multiplication: The commutative

property is when you ip each number on each side of the equal sign. For
example: 4+7=7+4

Simplifying
Equations

If I were to simplify this expression: 4(7x - 3) + 2x

you would first distribute the 4 to each of the numbers. You
should now have (28x - 12) + 8x

Then combine the like terms. Once you have combines the like
terms you should now have 36x-12

Your final answer in 36x-12 because you can not simplify this
any more.

How to Solve and
Equations

Equation: 7x - 10- 9x = -13

When solving this equation, you rst want to combine the like terms. You
would coming 7x and 9x. You should now have -2x - 10 = -13

Now you want to do the inverse operation, so you would add the 10 to the
-13. You should get -3. Now your equation should look like this: -2x= -3

Next, divide the -2x into the -3 because you have to do the inverse
operation. You should get 1.5.

1.5 is your nal answer.

Simplifying
Equations

Steps on how to simplify this equation:

5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6

You must rst use the distributive property. Put parenthesis starting at 5x/6
and ending at 1/2. Then put parenthesis that just go around the 11/6. For
example:

You want to nd a number that all of the denominators go into. For this
equation, they all go into 6. Now your equation should look like this:

Divide the denominator by the least common multiple, and then divide by
the numerator. You should now have this:

And this is your nal product. If desired you can solve this equation.

Final equation (simplied)

How to Solve and Graph

Equation: 2 ! x (-5)

When you are solving this equation, you rst have to do the inverse
operation so you would multiply the negative 5 by 2. Make sure that you
switch the sign because you multiplied a negative with a negative. Now
you should have this equation: x ! -10

Graph:

When you are graphing number on a number line, you have to make sure
that you out the number on the correct side of the zero. In this case, you
would put it to the left of the zero because it is a negative number. You
would have a closed dot because it is part of the solution set. You would
also put the arrow on going away from the zero.

This is what you nal graph should look like:

How to Solve and Graph
Equations

Equation: -4x + 4 " -8

When you solve this equation, you rst subtract the 4 from the -8 because
you have to do the inverse operation. Now, your equation should look like
this: -4x"-12.

Now divide the -4 into the -12. You should get -3. You have to switch your
sign because you divided a negative into a negative. Now your equation
should look like this: x ! 3.

Graph:

When you graph you have to put your number on the correct side of the
zero. Then, put a a closed dot. Next, you would put your arrow going away
from the zero because it is part of the solution set. Your nal graph should
look like this:

Closed Circles and
Open Circles

When you put down a closed circle

on a number line, it means that it
is part of the solution set.

When you put down a open circle

on a number line, it means that it is
not part of the solution set.
