What is news?
It is a report about an event that happened either in the past or present
A material reported in a newspaper
News can be an information about something
A report that has meaning to the readers because it has relation to what they are doing

News ..
Must be something new
Could be old information or idea that is given new angle
Based on facts that are accurate and precise

News Elements or News Values
For news to be interesting, it should have values that will attract the readers to read the content of the news.
These are elements that are also called news values.

Timelines Playing ups todays angle
Example: Vhong Navarros lawyer: Latest rape case cooked up by Lees camp
MANILA, Philippines The lawyer of celebrity host Vhong Navarro said the latest rape case that
surfaced against the actor was cooked up by the camp of Cedric Lee and Deniece Cornejo.
Were expecting this pati mga lawyers nila. Mayroon daw silang pasabog, Atty. Alma Mallonga said in an
interview with Inquirer Radio 990 AM on Thursday.
(Were expecting this, even their lawyers. They say they have an explosive leak.)
Our understanding is this is going to be the first of other complaints that will be filed, she added.
Navarros lawyer made the statement after a still unidentified woman filed a rape case against the actor before
the Pasig city prosecutors office on Wednesday.
The alleged rape incident supposedly happened in 2010 and that the woman, who met Navarro through a
television show, is now in her mid-20s.
Lumabas na kung anong gusto nilang ipalabas. (Whatever they make it appear to be). But this is all irrelevant
in Vhongs case. Ito ay paninira, pang-di-distract, siguro pang-delay. (This is a demolition job, a diversion,
maybe even a delaying tactic.) Unfortunately for them, we will not be distracted, Mallonga added.
Navarro was embroiled in a celebrity scandal that fixated public attention when the actor was allegedly beaten
up by a group of men that included businessman Cedric Lee in the condominium unit of model Deniece Millet
Cornejo in upscale Bonifacio Global City in Taguig in January 22.
Cornejo claimed to be raped by Navarro. Meanwhile, Navarro filed criminal charges against Lee and Cornejo.
The National Bureau of Investigation dismissed the possibility that Navarro raped Cornejo, based on the closed-
circuit television video footage.

Proximity or nearness nearness of event, accident, situation, emergency or exigency to place that
interests readers.
Example: if 1,000 persons drown in a flood in a faraway country, the story has about the same news value as
a story describing how 100 persons drowned in a distant part of the United States for example.
In turn, that 100 person story has about the same news value as a story concerning 10 flood
victims within our own country.
Finally, a story about those ten victims has about the same value as a story describing a flood
which drowns one person in our local community.

Prominence familiarity to readers of person or place in the story
Example: Vhong Navarro vs Deniece Cornejo: Grin and bear it

An exasperated lawyers opinion, as a private citizen, on the astonishing Vhong-Deniece exchanges on
television:
The contending parties should stop talking about the merits of the cases (several have been filed). There is such
a thing as a sub judice rule; unfortunately, at this point, only the opposing camps can tell one another to shut
up. Usually, this happens when one feels that the other has more access to media. Ironically, the rule is invoked
only when its convenient. Right now, no one is saying shut up because both have, or get, considerable access to
media and they both want to talk.
In short, well have to grin and bear it some more.

Human Interest appeal to emotion and instinct
Example: Michael Martinez conquers Sochi with gutsy performance in Mens Free Skating
MANILA, Philippines Michael Christian Martinez may not be bringing home a medal at the 2014 Winter
Olympics in Sochi, Russia but the young Filipino did his country proud with his gutsy and emotion-filled
performances at the Mens Free Skating event that have captured the worlds attention.
As the more experienced and top-ranked skaters take to the rink, Martinezs number is expected to slide further
but not after briefly taking the top spot in the first batch of six in the competition aired live on television.
His spirited performance despite a fall in the free program Friday night only endeared him to the crowd and to
the media covering the Olympics who, according to a TV report, have lined up to get an interview with the 17-
year-old Martinez, who was the Philippines lone representative and the first from Southeast Asia.

Conflict Physical and mental struggle
Example: Death continues to hound Zamboanga siege refugees
ZAMBOANGA CITY Nearly five months after surviving the battle for Zamboanga between Moro rebels and
government forces last September, death continues to stalk residents who lost their homes in the three weeks of
fighting and are now housed in a refugee camp.
The latest victim is 14-year-old Omar Sahid, who died Tuesday morning at the Don Joaquin Enriquez Memorial
Sports Complex. Sahids death brought to 87 the number of people, mostly children, who have died since then
in the evacuation centers.
At the Don Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex alone, there are a total of 118,819 evacuees.
We all think that the grandstand is our dying place, said evacuee Omar Dalawis, a madrasah teacher who
serves as one of the camp managers at the sports complex.
He is also a volunteer of the Darul Iftah, an Islamic religious group which has a tent inside the sports complex.
As he is the person in charge of burial preparations for refugees who die in the camp, Dalawis keeps track of the
deaths.
Dalawis said the local and national governments have already forgotten them.
We cannot find jobs. They (government) just choose who can work for food. We dont even have money to buy
basic needs like salt, sugar or medicine. We dont have money to buy white cloth to bury our dead, Dalawis
added.
Gamar Hassan, an evacuee from Mariki village, said a child died on February 7 and another the day after.
Our government is preoccupied with sex scandals like Vhong Navarro. No one has ever started a real probe
why people are dying inside evacuation centers, Hassan said.
Arpa Husaying of the Philippine Council of Samah and Badjao said 2-year-old Pula Anas died of broncho
pneumonia, while Jerry Julhari, a 10-month-old baby, expired Friday due to diarrhea.
The Badjaos, when they beg from motorists, are not easily downed by illnesses, but when you control them in
a place where they could hardly make a living, its like genocide, Husaying told the Inquirer.
Husaying said the local and national governments should be made accountable for what is happening to the
evacuees.
Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco said there was a need to strengthen camp managers to monitor health and
sanitation in the camps.
Climaco said a medical mission, called Servicio Corazon, would be conducted in the evacuation camps on
Thursday (Feb 13).
Dr. Rodelin Agbulos, the city health officer, said his records show 81 deaths, six less than Dalawis count.
But one death is already alarming, he said.

Progress improvement, positive change
Example: Economy Grew 7.2% despite disasters

MANILA, PhilippinesThe Philippine economy grew faster than targeted in 2013 as the adverse impact of Super Typhoon Yolanda proved to be more
moderate than earlier feared.
But most Filipinos said their quality of life worsened last year despite government efforts to make the robust
growth inclusive.
The Philippine Statistics Authority, the newly formed agency that consolidates all government statistics,
announced Thursday that the economy, measured in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), grew by an annual
rate of 7.2 percent in the past year.
This exceeded the governments official growth goal of between 6 and 7 percent. This also was better than the
6.8 percent recorded for 2012.
GDP is the total value of goods produced and services rendered in the country for a given period.
In the fourth quarter alone, the Philippine economy grew by a subdued pace of 6.5 percent due to the drag
caused by the super typhoon.
Yolanda (international name: Haiyan), which left 8,000 dead and missing after ploughing through central
Philippines in November last year, was estimated to have caused P571 billion in economic losses. The amount
includes damage to public infrastructure and properties, as well as lost potential income due to the disruption of
businesses.
Yolanda came after a 7.1-magnitude quake struck some of the countrys main tourist regions in October,
claiming more than 220 lives.

Sex romance, marriage, divorce
Example:Iya Villania, Drew Arellano finally tie the knot

MANILA, PhilippinesNo matter how long the procession is, it will head nowhere else but the Church.
Proving the Filipino proverb right, celebrity couple Iya Villania and Drew Arellano took their 10-year
relationship to the next level and finally tied the knot on Friday.
The television hosts exchanged their lifetime vows in a private ceremony around 3 p.m. at at Meditation Point,
Kawayan Cove in Nasugbu, Batangas.
The supposed secret wedding of the 34-year-old travel host and Villania, 27, was made public by singer Paolo
Valenciano in his Instagram account.
He posted photos before the wedding started and while Villania was walking down the aisle in a white bridal
gown. Before the guests began coming in the outdoor wedding, Valenciano took a photo of the groom while
doing his last minute inspections.Saying it was the best wedding sign EVER, the direction sign going to the
venue of wedding showing Arellano carrying Villania was also captured by the singer, who is a son of veteran
singer Gary Valenciano.

ings, where the cagers friends from the basketball and sporting community will be invited.

Marc (Pingris) said the film has all the ingredients: comedy, drama, romance, some action. He thinks its a
winner, said Mang Pards.
Agree. Especially with his father-in-law, the original Bossing, Vic Sotto, leading the cast.
* * *
Time really flies. Was it 8 years ago, about this same time of year when James and Kris, heavy with child, at-
tended the birthday party of a media friend?
Four months later, in April, Bimby was born. It was a very difficult delivery for Kris, whose confinement in the
hospital was extended because of complications.
Bimby was cute when he was born, but now everyone agrees hes growing up to be a really good-looking lad.
A very merry Christmas to all!

MANILA, PhilippinesThe Philippines said Friday a deal has been reached to buy 12 fighter jets worth P18.9
billion ($415.7 million) from South Korea as the country struggles to modernize its military.
We did not only inch closer, we are almost there, Undersecretary Fernando Manalo, chairman of Bids and
Awards Committee, told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo Friday after Manila and Seoul reached a conclusion on
the negotiations for the acquisition of 12 FA 50 lead-in fighter jets.
We are considering it [FA-50 lead-in fighter jets] as not just an ordinary lead-in fighter because it can deliver
short range missile and there is a potential for these to be classified as beyond the short range fighter aircraft,
Manalo said.
The deal came amid a seething territorial conflict with China over the resource-rich West Philippine Sea (South
China Sea).
The acquisition of fighter jets is one of the two big ticket items in the P85-billion AFP Modernization Program.
The other is the purchase of two brand new frigates worth P18 billion.
The FA-50 is a new light combat aircraft manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries. It is a light combat ver-
sion of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft.
The deal was reached after seven months of negotiations with the Korean firm.
The first two fighter jets will be delivered 18 months after the contract signing, which is targeted before March
15. The delivery will be completed in 2017.
The Philippine military is one of the weakest in Asia, and retired the last of its US-designed F-5 fighters in
2005.
