Zinnia Zauber: No we can't do before. Sorry guys. Well, you know the
theme and that is a good start! lol
Sarvana Haalan: Celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals Week
at Virtual Laboratory Training and Career Center
Providing Laboratory Training, Career Recruitment and Promotion in
3D Virtual Worlds
Sarvana Haalan: First, I would like to send a shout to a few of those
300,000 including the laboratory team at the Baltimore City Health
Department Bureau of Disease Control (BDC) Laboratory. I have
been celebrating MLPW with them all week
Sarvana Haalan: that some of my lab peeps in Baltimore, Md

Sarvana Haalan: In celebration of Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, I am delighted to share
information about my ongoing Virtual Laboratory Training, Career Recruitment and Retention (VLTC)
Project.
Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is an annual celebration of
the laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in
every aspect of health care. Since lab professionals often work behind
the scenes, few people know about the critical testing they perform
every day. Therefore, Lab Week is an excellent time to acknowledge
and honor the more than 300,000 medical laboratory professionals
around the country who perform and interpret more than 10 billion
laboratory tests in the USA every year
Sarvana Haalan: As an ASCP-certified medical technologist, I am proud to be identified as one of the
300,000+ medical laboratory professionals around the country. These lab professionals include
pathologists, medical technologists, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, medical laboratory technicians,
histologic technicians, and phlebotomists.
Sarvana Haalan: I am sure everyone of you have been in contact with one lab professional
Sarvana Haalan: A brief bit about SarVana aka Sally S. Cherry, BS, MT(ASCP) the laboratorian!
I am medical technologist who is also a media geek. In 1974, Sally S.
Cherry graduated from Morgan State University with a Bachelor of
Science in Medical Technology and from Union Memorial Hospital -
School of Medical Technology with a Certificate of Completion in Medical
Technology. After college, she worked in medical research at the
Carnegie Institute of Washington - Department of Embryology. During
this time, she passed the national certification exam for medical
technologists administered by the American Society of Clinical
Pathologists (ASCP). After working as a medical technologist at a
Baltimore-based hospital, she entered public health as the Laboratory
Coordinator at Baltimore City Health Departments Bureau of Disease Control under the supervision of the
late public health pioneers, Dr. David Glasser; and Dr. John Hume of Johns Hopkins University School
of Medicine.
Sarvana Haalan: Laboratory professionals are well-educated and highly-trained health professionals who
perform and evaluate medical laboratory tests to detect, diagnose, monitor treatment, and help prevent
diseases, and save numerous lives each day. The dedication to quality medical lab testing and ultimate
patient care is demonstrated 365 days of the year.
Sarvana Haalan: Laboratory medicine is indeed an honorable profession and is vital to sustaining a high
standard of health care. It is one of the reasons that I am passionate about promoting laboratory science
careers in my online and offline activities.
Sarvana Haalan: It is the laboratorian in me that is always researching and/or testing traditional and
alternate platforms for information-sharing, lab training, and career promotion. It is the indeed
laboratorian in me that created and is developing the Virtual Laboratory Training and Career (VLTC)
Center with the in-world assistance of three different avatars Sally Cherry (Kitely), SarVana Haalan
(Second Life) and Sarvana Cherry (JokaydiaGRID).
Sarvana Haalan: Since 2008, usability testing and program development for the Virtual laboratory
training, career recruitment and promotion components (VLTC) Project have been an ongoing process
within several virtual-based environments including Metaplace (2D), Second Life, and OpenSim (Kitely,
OSGrid, and JokaydiaGRID). In 2009, the first Ms. BugLadys Lab was created in the now closed 2D
virtual world, Metaplace. The name, Ms. BugLady was nickname that I was given years ago in real life.
Sarvana Haalan: The VLTC Project was inspired by my work as a laboratory instructor specializing in
laboratory methods in the diagnosis of STDs/STIs and by the need for interactive long distance training
platforms. After several international "field" assignments in Turkey, Kenya, Egypt, Uganda, and USA, I
became interested in using technology to connect with other medical professionals. Then, I discovered
virtual worlds and my avatar(s) have never looked back!
3

Sarvana Haalan: With the shutdown of Metaplace in 2010, the VLTC Project was re-established in
Second Life with the assistance of the 3D avatar, SarVana Haalan. In 2011, the hands-on laboratory was
built and launched in CherNetiva located in JokaydiaGRID, an OpenSim grid. It is still an active training
laboratory. In 2012, various components of the VLTC Project were relocated to Kitely, another OpenSim
grid. Currently, the STI Laboratory Training Center and
Laboratory Career Center are located in my Kitely region
known as CHARE (Community HIV/AIDS Resource Exchange)
Village. It also houses a Social Media Center, HIV/AIDS
Awareness Center, and other health-related resource
components.
Sarvana Haalan: Everything is not complete so please excuse
our dust when you visit. :-)
Sarvana Haalan: It is hoped that VLTC Laboratory Career
Center, the laboratory science career recruitment and promotion component will be visited by high school
and college students, teachers, parents, medical professionals, and anyone interested in laboratory
science and/or pursuing a career in laboratory science. According to an annual survey performed by the
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), laboratory professions are seeing an increasing vacancy
rate. Currently, there are more than 40,000 vacant lab jobs in the United States. Thus, the need to recruit
for laboratory professionals.
Sarvana Haalan: The overall objective for the STI Lab Training and Career Center is to provide access
and delivery of information, links, and resources pertaining to STI laboratory methods, laboratory
guidelines, laboratory science careers, and laboratory organizations as well as foster networking and
collaborative partnerships with other professionals.
Sarvana Haalan: The components of the VLTC Project include:
STI Laboratory Training Center - STI Clinical Laboratory
Training
Lab Career Resource Center - Lab Career Recruitment and
Promotion
CHeTARE Social Media Center - Social Media and 3D Virtual
Worlds in Laboratory Science and Public Health (to be completed
in June 2014)
Sarvana Haalan: It is hoped the VLTC Center will be used for STI Lab Methods Training; events; Virtual
World Usability Training; laboratory promotions (such as Medical Laboratory Professionals Week); and
other lab-related capacity building tasks. As in real life, I welcome virtual-based connections, networking,
and collaborating with local, national, and international laboratory colleagues, educators, organizations,
and researchers. I must applaud the creative skills of Linda Kellie Designs (now owned by Zadaroo -
http://zadaroo.com) for the OAR file upon which CHARE Village was created. Much of the laboratory
equipment including the microscope was built in-world but some items are obtained from other sources
such as FleepGrid Shop (http://fleepgrid.com) and Kitely Market (http://www.kitely.com/market).
Sarvana Haalan: I elected to build a close to the real thing microscope because I hope to teach basic
microscopy in world

Sarvana Haalan: Kudos to a colleague for this excellent article...
The hidden profession that saves lives
By Rodney E. Rohde, PhD (Feb 11, 2014)
Medical Laboratory Science (also called Clinical Laboratory Science) is one of the most under-
recognized health professions with excellent job prospects
http://www.elsevier.com/connect/the-hidden-profession-that-saves-lives
Sarvana Haalan: Now, some shameless self-promotion
I was recently contacted to be interviewed for my professional laboratory organization, American Society
for Clinical Pathology (ASCP - http://ascp.org). As an ASCP-certified medical technologist, it is indeed a
delight and honor to be interviewed and featured for the ASCP-ONElab's "inspiring stories from the lab".
The talented ASCP Communications Writer, Susan Montgomery said it best... "Never underestimate the
impact a teacher can have on a student."

Rhiannon Chatnoir: you have several regions on Kitely, what are the projects you have there
Sarvana Haalan: I tried to keep the presentation so if any lab folks are in the audience... they can share
what is going on in there labs.
Sarvana Haalan: or for any questions
INCARN8 (incarn8): great presentation Sarvana!
Sarvana Haalan: Thank you
Buffy Beale: Excellent work Sar thanks!
INCARN8 (incarn8): do you have the ability to do gene sequencing or molecule modeling?
INCARN8 (incarn8): in real time?
Sarvana Haalan: This the classroom for lectures and viewing of
YouTube presentations
Zo (zotarah.shepherd): Very impressive work Sarvana.
Sarvana Haalan: Thanks...
Wisdomseeker (lissena): love the images
Serene Jewell: I was just in your world in your CHARE world a
few days ago. It is a very impressive and professional place.
Rhiannon Chatnoir: I know there is someone on the VIBE sims
that has an educational region dedicated to genetic science
INCARN8 (incarn8): lets confer outside this mtg i may have some resources you can integrate or
enhance functionality...as desired
Buffy Beale: I think that one is on the VWBPE MOOC coming up Rhi

Sarvana Haalan: My specialty since 1978 has been the
microbiology of sexually transmitted diseases... I feel that: "Real to
Virtual; Virtual to Real" in the Lab is essential
Beth Ghostraven: Max Chatnoir has an SL sim on genetics
Sarvana Haalan: I do have one challenge right now
INCARN8 (incarn8): thanks Beth . . . I'll reach out to Max
Sarvana Haalan: Getting my microscopes as interactive as in
JokayGRID
Jan Avi Ray (jan71): My friend is an AMT registered is she has a
chance still to go to US to work?
Sarvana Haalan: I need a microscope script
Sarvana Haalan: awesome... Have her to check out ASCP and/or
ASCLS websites.
Jan Avi Ray (jan71): thank you Sarvana:)
Rhiannon Chatnoir: I think that is a common hurdle for those moving to OpenSim, there are less access to
objects/scripts made by others, though Kitely does now have a marketplace
Beth Ghostraven: Sar, have you contacted any scripters to see if they can help you with the microscope
script?
Sarvana Haalan: I have and must sync our schedules for more discussions
Rhiannon Chatnoir: and, if you are interested in Science focused topics, especially as they might relate to
education, the VIBE region is a good place to collaborate with others
Sarvana Haalan: I have a script but can not get it to work
Sarvana Haalan: Great... will contact Stephen,
Kat Lemieux: Depending on what you want it to do, you might look at some builders who have made
telescopes, since a microscope is sort of related technology.
Sarvana Haalan: any other questions or comments?
Rhiannon Chatnoir: for others interested in VIBE http://wiki.bio-se.info/doku.php
Beth Ghostraven: VIBE has a sim in SL, too, and the BIO-SE group
Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes
Serene Jewell: You make virtual worlds look great, Sar! Well done!
Rhiannon Chatnoir: they do events in both as well, which is nice
Sarvana Haalan: Thank you... still much to do
Buffy Beale: Sar do you spend much time training the students to get around?
Sarvana Haalan: We will be having our Open House in Kitely
through the rest of April and the entire month of May
Sarvana Haalan: I have conducted a couple of real life
usability sessions in real life. Hope to do more but I am self-
funded so I must get a bit more creative on the end of the
spectrum :-)
Buffy Beale: yeah it's tough
Sarvana Haalan: I have used Skype to work with a couple
individual online
Sarvana Haalan: That is why I moved my SL Project to
Kitely... it is more budget-friendly ... hehe
Rhiannon Chatnoir: for those not familiar, Kitely has not only a monthly model, but has a by access pricing
Sarvana Haalan:I hope to conduct a component of my real life Brightfield Microscopy Lab Course inworld
Rhiannon Chatnoir: that would be great

Sarvana Haalan: I will be able to have refresher sessions without the trip to Maryland
Serene Jewell: Such a great use of virtual worlds.
Sarvana Haalan: That is a major appeal for me to use VWs
Rhiannon Chatnoir: to use at as professional development training
for lab professionals you mean?
Rhiannon Chatnoir: btw, speaking of VIBE, Stephen just popped in
Sarvana Haalan: yes... plus lab recruitment
Jan Avi Ray (jan71): Can u give me the lm of the SIM, Sarvana?
Stephen Xootfly: Greetings all.
Sarvana Haalan: http://Kitely.com for career information as well as
Buffy Beale: heyy Stephen!
Beth Ghostraven: Stephen! We were just talking about you :o)
Sarvana Haalan: sorry... * http://Kitely.com
Rhiannon Chatnoir: nod, told him he had perfect timing
Rhiannon Chatnoir: the link to Sarvana's region we will be visiting today is: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-
world/Sally-Cherry/CHARE-Village
Jan Avi Ray (jan71): thank you:)
Sarvana Haalan: He heard us talking about raiding his community. lol, lol
Rhiannon Chatnoir: you will need an OpenSimulator capable viewer
Rhiannon Chatnoir: indeed, all good stuff of course
Rhiannon Chatnoir: you can also tell Max we were talking on Genome Island
Maggie Larimore: what do you suggest; was having trouble with Singularity yesterday trying to get into
Kitely
Sarvana Haalan: I use Singularity most of the time
Sarvana Haalan: sometimes Firestorm
Rhiannon Chatnoir: some people also use Firestorm
Stephen Xootfly: Should I put up a moat and pikes?
Rhiannon Chatnoir: heh Stephen
Mrs Jenelle Angel Williams (jenelle.levenque): I use Firestorm with no
problems
Sarvana Haalan: I will parachute in, Stephen LOL, LOL
Rhiannon Chatnoir: I tend to use Singularity viewer myself
Stephen Xootfly: Drawbridge will be down, of course.
Sarvana Haalan: VIBE is an awesome community
Buffy Beale: with a huge welcome mat right Stephen :)
Serene Jewell: I use Firestorm for Kitely. It has to be the FirestormOS
version. The version that works for Secondlife doesn't work for Kitely.
Ari (arisia.vita): The latest FS version works for both
Mrs Jenelle Angel Williams (jenelle.levenque): I use the OS version
for SL and the Open Grids
Serene Jewell: Ari, that's great news.

Wisdomseeker (lissena): wonderful application for education!
Zinnia Zauber: Rah Sar! You inspire us so much!
Rhiannon Chatnoir: if your viewer doesn't have Kitely automatically set
up, you will have to add Kitely as a new grid
Rhiannon Chatnoir: you can use
Grid Name: Kitely
Login URI: http://grid.kitely.com:8002
Buffy Beale: ty Rhi
Rhiannon Chatnoir: to set it up
Sarvana Haalan: OK... I am heading over
Rhiannon Chatnoir: then you can use whatever your username and password is for Kitely grid
Rhiannon Chatnoir: the info for where her project sim is at http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world/Sally-
Cherry/CHARE-Village
Rhiannon Chatnoir: you can also create/login to your account through there and get whatever info you
need
