Computer-Based Learning for Electromechanical Systems, Model 8980:

A Modern-Day Teaching Tool for Effective Instruction in Electric Power Technology

Vivid Computer Graphics Demonstrate Key Concepts
Animation showing how a revolving
magnetic field is produced in
three-phase induction motors and
synchronous motors.
Figure explaining the 90 phase shift
between the voltage and current in a
capacitor.
Figure illustrating armature reaction in a
DC motor.
More than 600 highly detailed
color figures appear throughout the
course material to provide clear
illustrations
of the theory, as well as the hands-
on exercise procedures. Several
color animations are included in
the EMS-CBL program to help stu-
dents understand the key concepts
of electrical power technology. For
example, one animation shows
how a revolving magnetic field is
produced by current flowing in the
stator windings of a three-phase
induction motor or a synchronous
motor.
Powered by Tech-Lab

System Software
The EMS curriculum features engaging and
effective multimedia, graphics, and simulation,
all delivered through Lab-Volts powerful Tech-
Lab System Software. These interactive features
create the most advanced instructional tool
for electrical power technology in the world
today.
In addition to enhancing learning speed and
retention, Tech-Lab improves instructors effi-
ciency and effectiveness. The computer-based
curriculum delivery system makes it possible to
collect, store, analyze and score student data
using GradePoint 2020, an automated class-
room manager. This enables instructors to gen-
erate reports, track progress, rate competen-
cies, assess learning needs, and make appropri-
ate changes to the curriculum by means of the
Tech-Lab or GradePoint 2020 Course Editor.
See more details on the back.
More Effective Learning at Lower Cost
Tech-Lab speeds instruction time while foster-
ing greater retention. The estimated time on
task per exercise for the computer-based sys-
tem is 1.5 hours, as compared to two hours per
exercise with the traditional manual system.
Lab-Volts Electromechanical System
Computer-Based Learning program
(EMS-CBL) is a modern instruc-
tional tool that makes learning the
principles of electric power technol-
ogy quick and easy.
The EMS-CBL program consists of
complete courses in electric power
technology delivered on a CD-ROM.
These courses, available in English,
French and Spanish, are designed
for IBM

-compatible computers
(Pentium III or higher) running in
a Microsoft

Windows

98 SE or
newer environment. The EMS-CBL
program is designed for use with
the Lab-Volt Electromechanical
System (EMS), Model 8006, or the
Lab-Volt Simulation Software for
EMS (LVSIM

-EMS), Model 8970.

Using the EMS-CBL program with
LVSIM-EMS, students are able to
follow a complete, interactive mul-
timedia course in electric power
technology, learning at their own
pace. Instructors can assess the stu-
dents knowledge by administering
periodic hands-on rubricable exams
that require students to demon-
strate their knowledge on actual
EMS laboratory equipment.
This efficient approach to learning
and instruction allows schools to
offer remote courses, an education-
al trend that is gaining increasing
acceptance throughout the world.

GradePoint 2020
TM
Classroom-Management
and Gradebook System
As students complete their work on the network, teachers
benefit from these time-saving features:
Real-Time Data Collection : Student performance on
activities and tests is collected automatically. This enables
instructors to provide instant feedback on student achieve-
ment and spend more time assisting students with their
work.
Easy Grade Viewing : Instructors can examine grades from
pre- and post-tests, online activities and assignments, and
overall grades in one grid.
Automatic computing and recording of grades : Grades
include tests and assignments that are part of the curricu-
lum, as well as any supplemental assignments instructors
may create and add to the program.
Simple Report Generation : A click of a button will gener-
ate any of 20 grade and competency-achievement reports,
based on any criteria of students or courses.
Manual setting of grade weights and competency
thresholds: The competency threshold is an effective tool
for tracking student achievement throughout the duration
of the course.
Program Management Made Easy
GradePoint 2020 facilitates the management of multiple
Tech-Lab stations throughout a system of satellite cam-
puses or remote networks. With the ability to compile,
analyze, and store individual student data in one central-
ized database, GradePoint 2020 makes it possible for
one program administrator or instructor to manage data,
evaluate performance, and report individual and group
performance for hundreds of students.
Lab-Volt Simulation Software for
EMS, LVSIM

-EMS, can be used

as a stand-alone product or as
a complement to actual labora-
tory equipment or the EMS-CBL
program.
As a stand-alone package, the
LVSIM-EMS software program
provides hands-on activities to
familiarize students with electri-
cal power and machines, includ-
ing active, reactive and apparent
power, phasors, AC/DC motors
and generators, three-phase cir-
cuits, and transformers.
Since the virtual equipment is
so representative of the actual
EMS laboratory equipment, stu-
dents develop hands-on abilities
as they would with actual equip-
ment.
Furthermore, students can copy
the software onto their personal
computers at no additional cost.
Although they would not have
access to measuring functions,
they can determine equipment
connections associated with the
schematic diagrams shown in
the exercises. This preparation
will significantly reduce the time
required to perform the exercises
in the laboratory, and will result
in the need for less physical hard-
ware per student.
LVSIM-EMS is a cost-effective tool that enables stu-
dents to perform the same exercises as in the
Computer-Assisted 0.2-kW EMS Training System
(Model 8006), courseware or the EMS-CBL program.
