1. INTRODUCTION
Organisations have a variety of purposes that depend on why they were established. Some
operate for profit, whilst others do not. Organisations structure themselves and operate in ways
that allow their objectives to be met. Every organisation has a range of staeholders whose
interests need to be satisfied, but staeholders have competing interests that may be hard to
reconcile.
!usinesses operate in an environment shaped by the government, competitors, consumers,
suppliers, and international factors. "earners will understand that some influences on the
business environment are direct and clear, for e#ample ta#ation policies on corporate activities.
Other influences are less clear, perhaps coming from the international arena and sometimes with
only an obli$ue impact on the national business environment.
%t is within this business environment that organisations function and have to determine
strategies and a modus operandi that allow them to meet their organisational purposes in ways
that comply with the relevant legal and regulatory framewors. %n addition, business marets
tae various forms and the structure of a maret enables an understanding of how organisations
behave. %n this unit learners will consider how different maret structures shape the pricing and
output decisions of businesses, as well as other aspects of their behaviour.
Aim
&he aim of this unit is to give learners the nowledge and understanding of how a business unit
can strategically organise and plan for liely future outcomes in order to be successful.

LECTURES
&hese will be developed around the ey concepts as mentioned in the indicative course content

application of theoretical concepts. &his method is primarily used to identify and e#plain ey
aspects of the subject so that learners can utilise their private study time more effectively.
SEMINARS
&hese are in addition to the lectures. &he seminars are designed to give learners the opportunity
to test their understanding of the material covered in the lectures and private study with the help
of reference boos. &his methodology usually carries a set of $uestions identified in advance.
Seminars are interactive sessions led by the learners. &his method of study gives the learner an
e#cellent opportunity to clarify any points of difficulty with the tutor and simultaneously develop
their oral communication sills.
CASE STUDIES 2n important learning methodology is the e#tensive use of case studies. &hey
enable learners to apply the concepts that they learn in their subjects. &he learners have to study
the case, analyse the facts presented and arrive at conclusions and recommendations. &his assists
in the assessment of the learnerCs ability to apply to the real world the tools and techni$ues of
analysis which they have learnt. &he case study serves as a supplement to the theoretical
