Chapter 3 Summary

By Luke Elders
Distributive Property
The distributive property is when you
distribute a number into different parts of
the equation and break it down. Its when
you distribute the multiplier by the
numbers in the parenthesis.
a (b + c) = ab + ac
Associative Property
The Associative Property of
Addition/Multiplication is when the numbers are
in a addition/multiplication or
subtraction/division problem and there are in
parenthesis. The parenthesis in the equation
dictate where to start calculating.
(4+1)*2 = 4+(1*2
(1 + 2)+ 3 = 1+ (2 + 3)
Commutative Property
The commutative property is the
property in which the numbers are
moved around in order to equal the
same thing not using parenthesis.
2*3 = 3*2
2+3 = 3+2
How to Simplify the
Expression...
The first step in simplifying the expression above is distributing the
number in the parenthesis. Like so
4*7x - 4*3
28x - 12 + 2x
The next step is adding like terms
28x + 2x
30x - 12
Now your done!

4(7x - 3) + 2x
Explain the Steps Necessary to
Solve the Equation...
1. Find Like terms
7x - 10 -9x = -13
2. Add like terms
7x + -9x = -2x
3. Bring the equation down
-2x - 10 = -13
4. Add ten to both sides of the equation
-2x - 10 = -13 l +10 +10
-2x = 3
5. Divide both sides of the equation by -2
-2x/-2 = 3/-2
3/2
6. Simplify
1 1/2
7x - 10 - 9x = -13
Explain Steps Necessary to Solve
the Equation...
Find a Common denominator
Multiply and bring down numbers
Solve the equation
1.
3.
2.
Explain how to Solve and Graph
the Inequality....
2 is less than or equal to x over -5
Steps:
1. Multiply by -5 on both sides of the inequality sign
When got the answer flip the inequality sign
Finally Graph it
1.
2.
3.
Solve the Following Inequality,
Then Graph the Solution...
Solve it
<--- Subtract 4 on both sides
<---Divide by 4 on both sides
<---Then Graph the Inequality
Open and Closed Circle When
Graphing a Number line
Open Circle: An open circle is when the number on a
number line is not part of the solution.
Closed Circle: A closed circle is when the number on
the number line is part of the solution.
Word Problem #1
Inequality
Solve
Chris wants to buy a
bicycle that costs
$160. If she saves
$12 each week, what
is the fewest number
of weeks she must
save in order to buy a
bicycle?
Word Problem #2
Equation

Solve
Marked worked on math
homework less than 1/3
the amount of time that
his brother did. If Mark
spent 25 minutes on his
math homework, how
much time did is brother
spend on his math
homework?
Word Problem #3
Inequality

decreased by
thirty-six, is at
most twenty
two. Find the
Number (x)
