stretched to its limits, and where it felt as if we
have lost an important part of who we are. We
have gone through stretches in our lives where
the cold, long winter has set in, and it seemed like
it was never going to end. And even when winter
did come to an end; when we could finally lift
our head up and see hope, see life, and see that
we could move forward, there is always a
reminder left behind of that cold, hard winter;
there is always ice still left floating on our lakes
reminding us of that season.
There are many responses, depending on
the situation, as to what we do with that
reminder, very much like what some people did
this past Memorial Day Weekend. Some people
will do absolutely anything to avoid the reminder
of winter, and so they will go anywhere but to a
place where they can see the ice on the lake; for
some the harshness of this winter is still an all too
recent and painful memory. Are there things that
you want to forget as well?
Some people chose to still have their
picnics and weekend celebration on the beaches
of Lake Superior. The ice on the lake wasnt
going to hinder them from doing what they had
wanted to do all winter. They packed up their
coolers, grabbed their towels and blankets, and
hit the beach. Even some jumped in for a really
quick swim! There are also people who seem to
be able to move on as if nothing has happened
after a long, hard winter in their life. They
continue on as if everything was the same, even
though the reminder sits there staring them in the
face day after day that things are no longer the

Acts 17:24-28
24
The God who made the world and
everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and
does not live in temples built by human hands.
25
And
he is not served by human hands, as if he needed
anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and
breath and everything else.
26
From one man he made
all the natons, that they should inhabit the whole
earth; and he marked out their appointed tmes in
history and the boundaries of their lands.
27
God did
this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach
out for him and fnd him, though he is not far from
any one of us.
28
For in him we live and move and
have our being.

As some of your own poets have
said, We are his ofspring.

I had a Pastors meeting in Harvey today,
and as I was driving past Lake Superior I couldnt
help but notice it. Ice! Can you believe it? Its
almost June and there is still ice that can easily be
found on the lake. In fact, I am certain that there
is going to be ice on that lake well into June (I
hope Im wrong). As people celebrated the start
of summer, Memorial Day Weekend, those that
went to the beach got an up-close reminder of just
how long, cold, and brutal this past winter was.
With all of the green grass, the green on the trees
budding, and all the grilling out that was done on
this first 80+ degree weekend, there is still a
reminder of winter still floating on that lake.
This made me think, where in our lives is
the ice still floating on the lake? Most of us have
experienced stretches in our lives where things
were difficult, where our inmost being was

Faith Lutheran Church
Mission Statement
It shall be the mission of Faith
Lutheran Church of Ishpeming
to develop, strengthen, and share
witness to the message of the
Gospel; through an
increased understanding
of our ministry, and our
daily living, both
individually and as a
congregation.
same.
And yet, some people chose to drive by the
lake to see all the ice. This is done to remind them
of the winter they have been through and look
forward to the warm weather up ahead. In fact the
ice on the lake spurs them into action to make
summer plans so that they can enjoy the nice
weather before winter rears its ugly head yet again.
Are there things you have gone through in life that
you use to serve as reminders about where youve
been that have driven you to be who you are now
and where you are headed?
What long, hard winters have you gone
through in life, and how do you see them? We all
handle and process them in different ways. Each
different winter we go through, depending on the
severity, effects how we choose to see the ice on
the lake. However, there is one thing that remains
the same; God is there in it all. God has never
wanted our past hardships or trials in this life to be
the things that define us. Those winters that we
have all gone through may have helped make us
who we are today, but they do not define who we
are; God does that. We can let the ice on the lake
close us off to the world and others, ignore it as if
its not even there, or use it to drive us forward in
life, but with God out of the picture, the winters we
go through will always define who we are, and so
who we become depends on the types of winters that
we face and how we handle them.
However, Jesus bears everything on the
cross, even out winters. He bears the ones that make
us cringe, the ones that we suffer through, and the
ones that beat us down until it seems like there is
nothing else left. Jesus bears that cold and ice; bears
the burdens with us that each winter brings. In that
we no longer find our identity or who we are in the
winters that we have gone through or how cold,
harsh, or long that they may be, but we find our
identity in the one who bears those winters with us.
In Jesus we live, move, and breathe; in Jesus we see
who we are simply by knowing whose we are; in
Jesus we find everything that we are and everything
that were meant to be despite the winters that drain
us. The next time you are confronted with the ice on
the lake in your life may you see God in it, bearing
it with you, and may you find your identity in that
God who bore everything for you on the cross.

Musician Needed! Do you
know of anyone who plays
piano and would like to play in
church? The person should be
competent on a piano keyboard
and have a desire to play for
worship services on Sunday mornings. The new
person would play once a month and more
during various times of the year. Carol, Laura,
and Nancy arent going anywhere but would like
more flexibility in their schedules. Training will
be provided. If interested, contact Pastor Dave
at 486-9083 or Laura Korte at 486-8758.

2014 Northern Great Lakes Synod
Assembly Report by Laura Korte
On May 18 and 19, 2014, I had the
privilege of attending the NGLS Synod
Assembly in Marquette. Upon arrival on
Sunday afternoon, I had the opportunity to
attend one of several workshops that were
being offered. I chose to attend the
workshop on Improving Your Newsletter
offered by Linda Dahl of Bethany Lutheran
Church in Ishpeming. This in no way means
to suggest that our own newsletter is not an
excellent publication, but at this workshop I
learned of several other resources that may
be useful to our newsletter editor. I will be
sharing these with her.
We were then ushered into a banquet
which was excellent. I had the privilege of
dining with Pastor Robert Sutherland, who
among others, was honored for the 55th
anniversary of his ordination, along with
Pastor Rell Spickerman, who was honored
for his 50th anniversary.
Music was provided by Pastor Doug
Norquist who, at the request of Bishop
Skrenes, wrote a song encompassing the
theme of the convention, Worship,
Welcome, Witness.
On Monday morning, I returned to
the convention and attended the Eucharist
Service. This service was extremely
inspiring. The service was a formal service
with the added surprise of the use of Setting
7, which is the service with a Latin beat. The
keyboard players were accompanied by the
Front Street Brass Quintet, adding a more
festive flavor to the worship service.
After an opportunity to refill our
coffee cups (there were many such
opportunities) we assembled for the formal
business meeting. After a call to order by
Bishop Skrenes, we moved on to the election
of a synod treasurer, action on an amended
budget for 2014 and a proposed budget for
2014 and a resolution to continue our
synods support for our ELCA seminaries in
various ways.. We also heard reports from the
Bishop, Assistant to the Bishop Katherine
Finegan, the Treasurer (Larry Pagel of Messiah
Lutheran Church of Marquette who was reelected
for his 5th term) and various other Committees.
Bishop Skrenes reported that the Quarters
for World Hunger collected earlier in the day
reaped a total of $18,466.96, which will go far in
feeding those less fortunate than we.
The keynote speaker was Pastor Michael
Stadie, the program director for Lutheran Disaster
Relief. He also served as the Lutheran Disaster
Response Coordinator in Iowa and helped 25+
communities to recover from various disasters.
Our congregation was recognized by
Earthkeepers II as one of the congregations
participating in an environmental initiative, having
applied for and receiving a grant to help make our
building more energy efficient. In addition this
organization establishes interfaith community
gardens with the harvests being shared with our
local food pantries, and providing workshops and
retreats to understanding the relationship between
our Christian faith and environmental issues.
There being no further business to conduct,
the meeting adjourned
