Death and the Miser

by Hieronymous
Bosch

Take a few minutes to
look at this painting.
For your warm up,
write a paragraph in
which you describe
what you see as
happening in this
picture. Be as
descriptive as you can
there are a lot of
details.
Your instructions
Listen as I read an analytical piece about the
painting.
When Im finished, write down 3 4 facts that
you remember.

Then, use those 3-4 facts to write another
paragraph.
Paraphrasing vs. Direct Quoting
At the end of your paragraph, write (Pioch, 2002).
This is how you paraphrase and cite specific facts and
details from your sources.
In research papers, you should quote from a source
to show that an authority supports your point
to present a position or argument to critique or comment on
to include especially moving or historically significant language
to present a particularly well-stated passage whose meaning
would be lost or changed if paraphrased or summarized
You should summarize or paraphrase when
what you want from the source is the idea expressed, and not
the specific language used to express it
you can express in fewer words what the key point of a source is

How to direct quote
Make sure you have a signal phrase. Try to avoid
using says over and over again.
Here are some alternative signal phrases that
work well in research papers: asserts, claims,
posits, determines, refutes, highlights, illustrates,
argues, theorizes.
When you are finished quoting, you should
include the authors last name and the page
numbers in parentheses.
Wilhelm claims that asdlfkas;dl
fasdlfhalsdhfalksd (Wilhelm 22).
Special Cases
If you want to quote more than 4 lines from
your source, use a block quote.
Brown argues the opposite point in his article
on Earharts disappearance:
asdkfalsdfhasldkjfhaslkdfhaslkjdfhakljsdhfalskdf
adjfahsdlfasldkfhasdlkjfhasldkfhasldkfjhaslkdfh
asdlkfgjasd;lfasdlkfhasdlkfhaslkjfhaslkf. (Brown
33-34)
Special Cases Part 2
You may need to alter the original quotation. Use
brackets to do this.
For example, you may wish to cut out a sentence.
asdlkfjas;dlfjasdfh *+ asdkjasd;lfkjaslkdfjas
Or, you may wish to change a word to make it
easier to understand (if youve taken the
sentence out of context)
*Earhart+ was last seen akldsjfaskldjfsa
Here, Ive replaced her with Earhart so the
reader knows to whom the author is referring.
Your Thesis and Outline
With your group, look over the sample outline
on Frederick Douglass.
Make a list of rules about the structure and
format of the outline. Consider how the
author labels the sections, how he organizes
his information, the font he uses, etc.
How to Write a Formal Outline

For the rest of the period:
Work on your formal outline and thesis.
This will be included in your final draft.
Remember this main difference between weak and strong
research papers a weak writer will spend each paragraph
on a different source. A strong writer will look at all of her
sources and think of a way to organize paragraphs by
ideas.
I am going to ask that your papers have two sections A
section in which you present your research, and a section
in which you make some sort of analysis (you pick a theory
you think is most likely and explain why, for example. You
will be able to use first person in this section)
Your next checkpoint will be sometime in the middle of
March. I will want you to bring in a rough draft of your
paper.
