Open University

Living in this modern era pushes us to be more involved in technology. Nowadays,

everything is done by technology. It is not an exception for learning. Learning via multi channels is
no longer a rare thing to see, people nowadays choose to browse on the internet rather than to
actually search from a book. At this rate, open university has also become an option for high-school
graduates. pen university has a whole different learning system from regular university, its system
is called open and distant learning !"L# which enables their students to learn across the country
only via the internet. $ven though they have their own advantages, open university still has a lot
things to fix on their system. pen university graduates are lacking in so many areas that makes it
hard for them to succeed in the real world because of three reasons % it is difficult to learn via
online, there will be no contact with friends, and the open university is still unknown to the public.
&irst , it is very difficult to learn via online. Not everybody can have the courage to learn
independently. Learning from distance means we, alone, have to go dig by ourselves. 'e are only
learning from the modul which is given by the university and also from the internet. (here will be
no class where we are able to meet the teacher. (his will be such a big problem for people in
Indonesia as our culture teaches us to hear not to found it by ourselves. pen university opens
some tutorial classes which allow student across the country to meet the teacher and ask some
)uestions. *ut these classes are very limited and so the fre)uency of students meeting the teachers
is still very rare. +ompared to students from regular university who get to meet the teacher anytime,
this is )uite burdensome as the students from open university only have the source from their
modul.
,econd, there will be minimal to no contact at all with friends from the same university.
,ociali-ing with friends when you are in college is one of the most important thing to do if you
want to succeed. .aking friends means you can also get knowledge from them. Nowadays, you can
not only count on books and teacher. /ou have to get out and actually do something in the real
world, like making friends. .aking friends is needed in our 0ob when we are going to make a
network. ,tudying in an open university means you are learning only from internet which also
means no interraction with your peers at all. ther than that, students from open university will
have no chance to 0oin a student organi-ations like *$.. 1oining a student organi-ation has a lot of
advantages, like you can boast your leardership and confidence which is needed later when you are
all grown up.
(he last, open university is still unknown to the public. (here is very little information of
them. (heir reputation is also low and their )uality is still highly )uestionable. (his causes their
graduates to have a hard time 0oining a company. 'hy2 .a0or companies nowadays, especially in
Indonesia, prefer to recruit people from reputable universities. (hey are no longer looking only
from the individual potential but also from their universities. $ven though open university has been
around for almost 34 years, they are still very unrecogni-able. .any people still do not know about
it. (hey also have very little achievement which causes them to have no reputation compare to other
universities. (hey are also in short of enthusiasts. .any high-school graduates prefer regular
universities to open universities.
In short, open university is a good change for our coutry. It teaches our people to be more
independent. *ut their system still has a long way to go before it is suitable for people in our
country. .aybe in the future, when we are able to develop more, we can choose open university as
the top choice. *ut for now, regular university is stil the best choice.
