On some days, St.
Clair
Shores resident Brian
Vogel is fighting fires that
rage within the city limits
of the City of Detroit.
Its a career hes had
for more than two de-
cades.
On other days he,
along with his two busi-
ness partners and Detroit
Fire Department col-
leagues, Jeff Smith and
Mike Urban, oversee the
operations of the citys
newest eatery
Firehouse Pub at 23018
Greater Mack in down-
town St. Clair Shores.
Were all active
Detroit firemen, Vogel
said. And I grew up here
in St. Clair Shores. This is
my backyard. I went to
Lakeview High School
and grew up on Harmon
Street. Ive resided here
just about my entire life.
We were talking, and I
told the guys that I think
a firehouse pub would do
really well in St. Clair
Shores.
What started out as
talk, soon became reality
as the three firefighters
came together several
months ago.
Mike found this spot,
Vogel said. So we came
here, looked at it, and I
said, wow, this would be a
real nice spot.
The kitchen and infra-
structure of the building
was already set up, Vogel
said, meaning the decor
and a few other finishing
touches would need to be
done to the location.
We changed the color
scheme, moved a few
booths around, and added
this fire department decor
from local departments,
he said. It was more
about all the good touches
that we wanted. It was the
perfect size, the perfect
spot, the perfect location. I
grew up in the neighbor-
hood, and I really wanted
to bring a real firehouse
pub here.
In early April of this
year, the trio got the keys
to the location. By May 10,
the Firehouse Pub was
open for business.
Were still tweaking
things, he said.
Everything from having
more decor to put up, to a
few things in the kitchen,
were still making small
changes here and there.
Changes include going
from 20 to 50 different
types of bottled beer, add-
ing taps to the bar area,
and overhauling the menu
making it a true fire-
house-style place.
We have very unique
food, Vogel said. Its
something that youre just
not going to get from other
places. Our pizza, for ex-
ample, is a stone oven piz-

bring flavor

The Firehouse Pub offers a menu with several recipes taken right from the fire-

Some came in honor of loved ones lost.
Some came to support those in the midst of a
fight.
Others were survivors, and others simply came
to show their support.
Whatever the reason, hundreds gathered at
Blossom Heath Park last Friday morning as part of
the American Cancer Societys Relay For Life
event.
I wouldnt miss this for anything, Armando
Fracassa said. Weve got to stand up and do what
we can to win this fight against cancer.

chase iPads and other
items to aid in the therapy
of Autistic children.
This years event, the
2nd annual, which was
considerably bigger in
numbers and scope, has
the same goal in mind.
This money raised
here will be used to buy
more development-type
things, Marianne
Langlois, Director of
Family Medicine at Henry
Ford Health Systems,
said. These are things
that really help the kids
and the therapists as well,
who are working with
them. They need this, and
these things arent things
that are covered or part of
the budget. They fall out-
side of that, but are very
helpful.

Less than one week re-
moved from the 62nd an-
nual St. Clair Shores
Memorial Day Parade, the
results are in, and the hon-
ors doled out.
This is my favorite part
of the whole process, pa-
rade committee chair-
woman Cheryl Furdos
said. To give out the
award for the parade.
The honors were decid-
ed by a panel of judges,
which included former
mayor Robert Hison, Mrs.
Nancy Hison and 40th
District Court Judge Mark
Fratarcangeli.
Awards were handed
out to eight recipients in
eight different categories.

He was found living with a feral cat colony this

the wave toward the finish
line.

en out to the top three fin-
ishers, along with raffle

ing and a bounce house.
The success of this
years event has admit-
tedly exceeded the ex-
pectations Langlois had
when she came up with
the concept last year.
Its amazing, she
said. People seem to
come out of the wood-
work when they find out
what this money does
and how much it helps.

the community has been
great. Its just been

More than 600 duckies were sponsored to
race in the Rubber Ducky Race for Autism
last Saturday. Above, Councilmen Tony
Tiseo, Ron Frederick and Chris Vitale, joined
Councilwoman Candice Rusie and state rep-
resentaive Sarah Roberts, and others, in
dumping the ducks into the water and start-
ing the race.

And money was raised, more than $85,000
in fact, from pledges, items purchased at at
tents set up throughout the park and dona-
tions in general.
Our gross revenue is estimated at
$85,130, said Amy Howard, American
Cancer Society Relay For Life specialist. It
was just a great event. We honored 74 survi-
vors, had 20 teams and 263 registered partic-
ipants online.
Howard said, in actuality, however, more
than 500 people attended this years event at
Blossom Heath Park.

To say all three softball
teams had a good week-
end would be an under-
statement.
In fact, each squad cap-
tured a ditrict title and
kept its state-title hopes
alive.
South Lake girls soft-
ball team was on a mis-
sion, beating nemesis
Center Line in a Division
2 district championship
game.
But first, the Cavaliers
had to beat Warren
Lincoln. On paper, this
was a mismatch, but once
the game started, it was a
battle for seven innings
before South Lake won
3-1.
I wish I knew why we
had so much trouble hit-
ting Lincoln, head coach
Dave Ahearn said. We
were able to squeeze out
three runs, and Sarah
(Nelson) and our defense
did the rest.
It was a nice win, but
now we had to beat
Center Line.
The girls and Ahearn
watched Center Line de-
molish Harper Woods
Chandler Park Academy
24-0 in its semifinal, set-
ting up another collision
course with South Lake
for the district champion-
ship.
The last two times the
Cavs faced Center Line,
they lost, including a 1-0
game earlier this season.
They jumped all over
us for three runs in the
first inning and had a cou-
ple of runners on base be-
fore Sarah was able to get
the third out on a big
strikeout, Ahearn said.
After that, the bottom of
our order came through
with some clutch hits.
They werent pretty, but
they counted and helped
us score five second-in-
ning runs.
After that, it was all
South Lake in a 16-6 vic-
tory and with it came the
district trophy. It is the
first title in the Ahearn
era and the first team dis-

I am so proud of our
girls, head coach Steve
Corbett said. We ran into
an outstanding pitcher
and battled through it. We
made some big plays and
took advantage of a few
plays to win a district title.
We played a very tough
schedule and it paid off.
We faced the best pitcher
(Emma St. John) we
played against this season
and had just enough of-
fense to win.

Corbett, complete with
bruised fingers and a cut
chin from getting hit by a
60 mph screwball, which
hit her hand and rico-
cheted off her chin,
earned the win in relief.
She pitched five in-
nings, giving up no runs
on four hits with three
strikeouts. Starting pitch-
er, sophomore Alexis
Nowowiecki, gave up four
runs on four hits in the
first two innings before
Steve Corbett decided to
make the change.
I just had to dig deep
and make some big pitch-
es against a good team
with good hitters,
Rebecca Corbett said. I
was a little shaken after
getting hit and it hurt, but
I had to give it my best ef-
fort for my team.
Corbett, who will play
college softball next year,
showed why she is one of
the best players in the
Ma c o mb Ar e a
Conference by going
2-for-3 with two runs
scored.
Nowowiecki was 3-for-
4 with a run scored and
two RBIs and senior
Tabitha Adkins had a run-
scoring single in the fifth
inning, which gave the
Huskies the lead for good.
The Huskies scored two
unearned runs in the first
inning, one run in the
third and two in the fifth.
In the district semifi-
nals, Lakeview edged
Grosse Pointe North 7-6
in eight innings.
They trailed 3-0, but
scored four runs in the
sixth to take a 4-3 lead
and added another in the
seventh.
Corbett gave up a two-
out, two-run homer to
send the game to extra in-
nings, but the Huskies
scored two runs on three
Norsemen errors and
gave up one run, but held
on for the victory.
Senior Elizabeth
Cooley had three doubles
and a couple of RBIs, and
junior Taylor Genzman
had two hits to pace the
Huskies nine-hit attack.

Lake Shore battled a very
good Marine City team in
a non-league game to pre-
pare for the district tour-
nament.
The Shorians blanked
the Mariners 5-0, improv-
ing to 22-11 overall.
Head coach Will
Puvalowski used four
pitchers, who combined
to give up only one hit
and one walk. The pitch-
ers were Rico, Ratledge,
Anika Champine and
Jessica Clouse.
Laporte went 3-for-4
and scored a run, while
Nemitz, Rico, Brooke
Wauters and Miller all
went 2-for-4. Waters,
Miller, and Rico each had
an RBI; and Rico and
Nemitz each scored a run.
As a team, the Shorians
pounded out 13 hits.
Lakeview
Huskies bow out
Host St. Clair Shores
Lakeview girls soccer
team entered its Division 1
district tournament with
hopes of winning three
games and a title.
The first game was a tilt
against Grosse Pointe
North, a team the Huskies
beat 3-1 on April 2 on a
cold, windy evening.
In that game, the
Huskies dominated the
second half in the victory,
but in this game it was the
Norsemen who controlled
two-thirds of the play.
North scored what
turned out to be the win-
ning goal at the 26:03
mark of the first half as
Lakeview lost 1-0, ending
its season 10-7-2 overall.
Head coach Brooke
Sweeney-Pouliot watched
her Huskies put several
shots on net in the first
half, including a 20-yard
free kick by senior Jessica
Witt at the 16:10 mark.
At the 10-minute mark
of the opening half, Witt
sent a crossing pass to ju-
nior Liz Lach, but North
sophomore goalkeeper
Emily McPharlin inter-
cepted it before Lach
could get a foot on it.
The Norsemen had sev-
eral chances to extend the
lead, but senior goalie
Sam Uppleger stood tall,
making tough saves to
keep the Huskies within a
goal. She stopped two
break-aways to lift her
teammates spirits.
The Huskies nearly tied
the game on two great
scoring chances late in the
second half. The first shot
rolled just wide of an emp-
ty right side of the net and
the second shot by senior
Becca Penny was saved
by McPharlin.

and still had a quarter
tank of fuel left. Fusion
Energi works on electric,
gas or a combination of
both.
The 2014 Ford Fusion
Energi is a five-passenger
plug-in hybrid sedan that
comes in two trim levels,
SE and Titanium, with
both utilizing CVT trans-
missions.
With Fusion Energi,
Ford delivers a true hybrid
plug-in vehicle that com-
bines the best in passen-
ger comfort, electric/gaso-
line performance and
mid-size dimensions that
outpaces the competition.
Utilizing a 2.0-Liter
Atkinson-Cycle inline-4
Energi Plug-In Hybrid
Engine that develops a to-
tal of 188 horses, the
Energi can run completely
on electric for 21 miles and
deliver 100 miles per gal-
lon-e electricity-only rat-
ing. When in combination
with the inline-4, the com-
bined EPA rating comes in
at 43 combined.
The Fusion Energi mod-
el doesnt come cheap, es-
pecially since Ford offers
a non-plug-in, 300 pound
lighter sibling Fusion
Hybrid that starts at
$27,280 and delivers im-
pressive 47/47 EPA num-
bers.
Could the regular Fusion
Hybrid be the better value
for most consumers? Yes,
it can, as the $10,000 base
price differential can buy
lots of fuel along the way.
Still, Fusion Energi de-
livers what Fusion Hybrid
doesnt and is the green-
er of the two. Specifically,
Energi offers three dis-
tinct drive modes at the
press of a button. An EV
Now all-electric mode
allows Fusion Energi to
accelerate to 85 mph and
still go 21 miles on full
electric. Acceleration in
electric-only is slow, but it
will get you up to turnpike
speeds. Next, theres an
EV Automatic mode that
utilizes both electric and
gas, and is similar to the
Fusion Hybrid. The final
mode is nearly full gas en-
gine power, which allows
the battery to build more
energy for later use.
One major drawback is
the trunk, where the
much larger Energi bat-
tery system shrinks cargo
capacity to a scant 8.2 cu-
bic feet. This number is
far from a regular Fusions
16 cubic feet, and smaller
than Fusion Hybrids 12.
The second drawback is
price. As noted, a $10,000
base price differential
cant be ignored.
However, if you want the
most advanced electric
plug-in on the road, the
2014 Fusion Energi is a
good choice.
Similar to competitors
Chevy Volt and Toyota
Prius plug-ins, once you
use up the allotted elec-
tric-only capacity, Fusion
Energi operates like its
sibling Fusion Hybrid.
