Happy New Year! Every year millions of people make New Year's

the time. We ask God daily to guide us as we make decisions about
the vision of our mission and we challenge you to do the same in
your life.
This new year has really started with some wonderful activities that
God has truly blessed. I briefly want to share with you three
blessings that God has already brought us in 2013:
"Blessings in a Box"
As I mentioned in last months newsletter, there are millions of
children around the world that have never received a Christmas gift.
Most of us take for granted the gifts we receive at Christmas time
because we have always received something for Christmas. But
this is the reality for many children here in the DR.
However, because of the overflowing love from the members of
New Hope Christian Church {Roanoke. VA), three hundred
precious Dominican children in Punta Cana will at least receive one
gift this year! New Hope Christian Church has partnered with our
Punta Cana church plant to provide a shoebox size present for
each of the children in the congregation as well as each child in a
nearby local school. The boxes all arrived with no problems and the
event was a huge success. Just look at the faces of these children
as they receive their "Blessings in a Box". Thank you New Hope!

National Preacher's Conference
We here at Eastern Dominican Christian Mission have seen a need
for more unity amongst the Christian Churches here In the DR and
have a passion to see each and every church grow. We believe
that God wants HIS church to grow and that we, as preachers,
pastors and missionaries, are a part of HIS growth plan. Therefore,
we held our2"'^annual National Preacher's Retreat over the
weekend of January 10-12^^.

thing we did was dress up like

God moved powerfully

We praise God for what He accomplished through this retreat!

Over the next few days "Great Crowds" wil! gather all over the
world in different churches to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ, For many of us, this is normal, common.
We gather together with other brothers and sisters in Christ every
Sunday to worship our Lord. However, millions of non-churchgoers
will be attending a worship service this weekend for the first time all
year. They will be looking for answers. Looking for something
different. Looking for something out of the ordinary.
Let us spread palm branches and make way for the King of kings
and Lord of lords. Let us shout "Hosanna!" "Lord, save us!" and
"Blessed be Your name!" Let us worship Jesus this weekend in
Spirit and in Truth with ail of our heart, soul, mind and strength
because He is worthy. Worthy of our praise, honor and worship.
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor
and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

A huge thanks to the wonderful medical team that once again
partnered with us and the Centre Medico Mutualista (clinic attached
to our La Romana church plant). Nancy Gray and her team of
highly motivated, hard working doctors
and nurses held their annual
"Operative Medico" (affordable
medical outreach) this month.
Surgeons Greg Delaurier and Leslie
Schuschke began early each morning
and operated until late afternoon each
day. They help as many Dominican
and Haitians as possible offering very
affordable (almost free) surgeries for hernias, gall bladders and
cysts while at the same time sharing the love of Jesus with each
patient.
This team of doctors, nurses and willing servants ran like a well-
oiled machine as patients arrived, were prepped for surgery, prayed
over, operated on and recovered in the post-op room. Each step on
the process was handled
professionally by the members of the
team, primarily made up of members
of the Northeast Christian Church,
Louisville, KY. Dozens of patients
were operated on included two of our
La Romana church members, Fran
Cordero and Nahum Baltazar. Each
patient is doing well and we praise
God for another successful Operativo Medico.
We also want to acknowledge Dr. Denise Putnuff (dermatologist)
for her medical outreach. She traveled around the eastern part of
the Dominican Republic holding consults in each of our four church
plants as well as in several of our church member's homes. Denise
helped solve many of the skin issues that people have been dealing
with for years. Thank you, Denise, for your ministry.
Also, a special thanks to Neil Webster,
EDCM board member, for working so hard to
get our La Romana sound system installed
as well as helping get the preacher's office
set up. During his time here this year, Neil got
to know the new preacher of the La Romana
Church, Jovanny Baez, as well as the
worship leader, Ricardo Luis. Thanks for
everything Nell!

can catch almost anything.
Josiah is learning to catch little
lizards too. But the more time
we spend in the house the less
the little critters seem to want
to stay. My mom says they are
not welcome visitors inside the
house anyway. However, you
all are welcome anytime, so
come on and check out our
new house. If you're up to it,
we can go on a adventure and
see what iittie critters we can
find together.

Paul tells us that we, the church, are to be the body of Christ here
on the earth. Jesus is the head and we are the hands and feet.
This means we are to preach the gospel and teach the world about
the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. It means we help clothe
the naked and feed the hungry. It means we love the unlovable,
have mercy on the unmerciful. We have different roles and
purposes, but we are to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ!
Wow, what a responsibility and what an honor! Here are a few
ways our local congregations have being the hands, the feet and

lead the congregation. At the time, Victor
and Heidy were living in Costa Rica as
missionaries serving several different local
congregations. While being a Dominican
native, Victor followed his passion and left
the Dominican Republic in 1991 to pursue
higher education and experience in
ministry. This passion for God's Word and
for reaching the lost landed Victor in
Panama where he received his higher
education in ministry from a Bible
Institute and began his full-time
ministry. Victor later found himself
serving the Lord in Costa Rica as well as
falling in love with a wonderfully spirited
Tica (Costa Rican) named Heidy. Now,
after more than 20 years of education and experience, God has brought
Victor and Heidy back to the Dominican Republic to pastor the Higuey
Christian Church and lead them through their first two years as a
congregation.
On May 22"^^ 2013 the Higuey Christian Church celebrated its two year
anniversary with a five day rally which included the participation of each
of the EDCM church plants as well as
several other local churches. Several local
artists shared their music and evangelistic
message each night as the theme was
"Underneath the shadow of HIS wings."
Victor's passion for the Lord is evident to
all and Heidy's sweet spirit and delicious
food is quickly becoming famous. We here
at EDCM are honored to have the
Hernandez family as a part of our team and are very pleased with where
God is leading this new church plant.

A wonderful group from First Christian Church, Morristown, TN
partnered with us here in June as they focused their efforts working with
our La Romana church plant. Lead minister Greg Grant led a very
organized and loving team
which held three VBS

made a craft, had a bible
lesson and played cool games in the front yard. The children thoroughly
enjoyed themselves as the American team showed them the unconditional
love of Jesus. The Mo'town gang also took on a large construction project
helping build a new entrance to the La Romana church building. This
included lots of mixing of concrete (by hand), shoveling, pouring, carrying
buckets of water and getting really dirty. They also came alongside the La
Romana congregation to help finish painting the front of the church
building to help conclude the face lilt.

Hello everybody, I have some great
news to share with you. 1graduated!
That's right, 1have officially
graduated from the first grade! We
have a program here in the DR
called "Ya Se leer" which means "I
can read." And the end of first
grade, we all are able to read in
English and in Spanish, so we had a
big celebration and party. My
parents were there and so was my
hermanito, Josiah. 1got to wear this
cool red robe and a cool hat and go
up on stage. They called my name
out and I walked down the aisle,
went up on stage and took my seat.
Then we first graders sang several
songs in English and Spanish and
performed for our parents. I had a
solo in the song "Mother Earth"
where I held the microphone and had
to sing by myself. 1was a little
nervous, but my mommy and daddy
had practiced with me a lot, so 1was
ready.
After the ceremony, we had
cupcakes and took a lot of
pictures. Anyway, now 1know how
to read and it is a lot of fun.
Have a great summer....and don't
forget to read every night before you
go to bedy^

The EDCM Mission Team is very proud to recognize the
faithful service of Rick and Suzanne York. After 41 faithful years in
full-time ministry Rick and Suzanne are retiring from the mission
field. When we think about what God has accomplished through
Rick and Suzanne's ministry throughout the years, words like
"powerful", "compassionate", "faithful", "dedicated" and "loving"
come to mind. Passages such as 2 Timothy 4:2 and 2 Corinthians
4:5 are reflected their ministry.
"Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season;
correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful
instruction."
II Timothy 4:2:
"For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and
ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake."
II Corinthians 4:5
Rick and Suzanne always preached the Word boldly and were
always prepared to correct, rebuke and encourage. The impact of
their ministry has been felt by tens of thousands throughout the
islands of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic
and will be remembered
for years to come.
Rick and Suzanne started
their journeys as students
at Johnson Bible College
(now Johnson University)
and Miliigan College, but
both were called to the
mission field shortly after
graduation. As a young
single missionary in Puerto
Rico, Suzanne Swango
(York) had followed her calling to be a full-time missionary as she
taught in the Puerto Rico Christian School. Little did she know that
God was about to bring her the man of her dreams and together
they would faithfully serve as missionaries for the next 40
years. Here is a simple timeline of the Rick and Suzanne's life as
full-time missionaries:
Rick teaching in PRCS
1972 Suzanne moved to Puerto Rico as full-time missionary
with the Puerto Rico Christian School
1973 Rick moved to Puerto Rico as full-lime missionar>'witli the

Me and my TKD friends!
Well, i just received one of the best
early Christmas gifts ever...my
yellow belt! As you know, I started
taking Tae Kwon Do several
months ago and I love it! My
favorite part is when my friends

we get to fight each other one on

We aren't allowed to actually touch
each other, but we are allowed to
practice our kicks and punches on
each other. It is a lot of fun.

Just the other day I had a big test
to see if I was ready to get my
yellow belt. I had to learn many
different types of kicks, punches
and combinations as well as the
Kicho Hanna. This is a 20 step
move that combines everything 1
know together in one fluid dance
like performance. I had to do it in
front of 3 teachers, all my
classmates and all of their parents.
I was nervous, but my Mom and
Dad said i did it perfectly and that
they were really proud of me.
Then, the teacher held a piece of
wood and 1 had to kick it and break
it. It was awesome! I didn't know I
could do that. When I kicked it, it
snapped right in half! 1 broke the
wood with my kick...awesome!
Anyway, I am loving my
Taekwondo class. Can't wait to be
in the Olympics some day:).
Merry Christmas

"Short-term Blessings"
Over the past several months we have hosted several short-term teams
which have been huge blessings. As these teams surrendered their time,
money, energy and comfort to come to the DR for a week and serve God,
we were constantly reminded of the passage in Ephesians 3:20-21:
"Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or
imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory
in the church and in Jesus Christ throughout all generations, for ever and
ever! Amen."
God continually showed us that He is able to do immeasurable more than
all we ask or imagine. The amazing group from Christ's Church Mandarin
as well as the incredible group from Broadway Christian Church
experienced firsthand just how powerful our Lord and Savior is and Just
how much He can accomplish if we surrender to Him. While both
churches focused their efforts partnering with EDCM's Higuey Christian
Church, we quickly became a shining light for the whole community to
see.
Here is a glimpse of what God accomplished through these two wonderful
short-term blessings:

"In our own words"
EDCM is blessed by the short term teams that serve along side
our national leaders. But we also feel that God blesses those
that give of their time and talents to serve. Here are a couple
testimonies from recent team members.
"I listened and looked at pictures as a friendly couple told me
about Eastern Dominican Christian Mission. They told me about
the churches and the Yorks and the Vandelindes but this seemed
so distant. Having the opportunity to go to the Dominican
Republic with my dad was definitely a major blessing. After the
trip I can say with full confidence "Now to Him who is able to do
immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His
power that is at work within us, to Him be glory In the church and
in ]esus Christ throughout all generations, for ever and ever!
Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21. God absolutely did so much more
than I could possibly imagine or ask.

What was I scared of the most on this trip?
Surrender. I was afraid of what God might ask me to
accomplish. Praise God for victory In Jesus! I learned that the
will of God is good, pleasing, and perfect He is our strength.
The church In Higuey was amazing and the worship
and message on Sunday night reminded me of why I was there;
for the glory and renown of the Savior. Through this week In the
Dominican Republic the Lord opened my eyes to more of the
reality of His Kingdom. He is coming soon. Surely He sees
everything these people have left to invest in His Kingdom. So, to
sum this up, on this trip I saw the Workers of the Harvest giving
for the most worthwhile cause, and that was truly a blessing.
Additionally, to all those who invest in this work, your giving is
surely not in vain! Praise God for what He has done and will do
here. "
-Emily Foster, 16 year old homeschooler from Florida
&
Emily taught in children and youth programs as part of Christ's
Church Mandarin's team in October.
"I don't know how you can grow to love people so much
in a few days, but I did. I'm already praying God will show
me a clear direction for my future. The trip home had its
difficulties, but we all made it in the end. Along the way
were more goodbyes, but God willing our paths will cross
again. God taught me many things this week. He gave me
courage to do things I didn't think I could do. He gave me
the strength to do physically tough jobs. He kept me safe
and healthy. He reminded me I don't have to change the
world, but to start with loving one person and serving right
where I am. He showed me the danger of becoming indifferent
and comfortable in my life. I saw the joy and contentment these
people have in spite of their simplistic lives. I am learning, daily,
to see things as God sees them, to love people as He would, to
live each day to the fullest, and give God the only thing I have to
give- myself and my dreams.
Ps. 37:4 'Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the
desires of your heart.' "
