Simulating and Evaluating Models
INVESTIGATING DIFFERENT WAYS OF MEASURING FISH STOCKS
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How do shers and marine scientists know how many sh are in the sea?
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?
Four key models used to monitor sh stocks in New Zealand waters
Investigating these models through replication and evaluation
Improving our statistical literacy through evaluation of their efectiveness
Create a Google Form, using Google
Docs, asking how many sh the class
thinks are in the sea - compare the results
with the actual number.
Ask the class when people need to count
big numbers of things how do they do it?
Use a Double Bubble Map to compare
and contrast the merits of counting a
total population (census) versus counting
a sample (street survey).
Brainstorm as a class how you might
count how many sh are in the sea.
Use the How do we Count the Fish in
the Ocean? Fact Sheet to outline the
four diferent methods for surveying sh
stocks with the class.
Predict the positives and negatives
of each survey method and record
these predictions.
Explain to students that they will be
replicating each of these models in
the classroom.
Students can use the Student Activity
Guide to support their learning.
Divide the students into four groups
(Trawl Surveyors, Catch Samplers,
Taggers and Age/Growth Measurers)
representing the four methods
of surveying.
Each group must create a model for
replication (instructions are in the
Student Activity Guide).
Explain that replicating something
means that size, scale and medium
might change but the purpose of the
model must stay the same.
Support student groups to create
the replica model associated with
their group.
Trawl Surveyors will produce a model
using a bucket and small plastic items
symbolising sh.
Catch Samplers will use school class
photos to identify trends over time.
Taggers will use GPS tools such as Find
my iPhone to identify journeys over time.
Age/Growth Measurers will track
numbers of words on a page in genres
of books to identify trends.
Analyse the strengths and weaknesses
of each model.
Use Visual.ly to produce an infographic
summarising class ndings.

Years 7 - 8
Students who have an interest in thinking
about pros and cons
Students who love inventing things
Students can check that they have successfully completed the task by:
Creating a replica model that presents
the same components as the large
scale one.
Identifying a series of strengths and
weaknesses of their groups model.
Contributing to the class infographic
in an efort to present their ndings.
