Firewire

A type of cabling technology for transferring data to

and from digital devices at high speed. Some
professional digital cameras and memory card readers
connect to the computer over FireWire. FireWire card
readers are typically faster than those that connect via
USB. Also known as IEEE 1394, FireWire was invented
by Apple Computer but is now commonly used with
Windows-based PCs as well.

connectivity and data transfer for video, audio and
storage peripheral applications through a universal

A very fast external bus that supports data transfer
rates of up to 400 Mbps. Firewire was developed by
Apple and falls under the IEEE 1394 standard. Other
companies follow the IEEE 1394 but have names such
as Lynx and I-Link.

FireWire is a fast and versatile interface used to
connect DV cameras to computers. FireWire is well
suited to applications that move large amounts of data,
and can also be used to connect hard disks, scanners,
and other kinds of computer peripherals.

The former name for High Performance Serial Bus. A
serial bus developed by Apple Computer and Texas
Instruments (IEEE 1394). The High Performance Serial
Bus can connect up to 63 devices in a tree-like daisy
chain configuration, and transmit data at up to 400
megabits per second. It supports plug-and-play and
peer-to-peer communication between

An interface standard adopted by the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers for very fast (400
megabits per second) digital data transfer, especially of
streaming video. Also called FireWire (Apple
Computer's trademarked name) and i.Link. In A/V
applications, tiny but robust 1394 connectors have so
far been used mostly for digital camcorder outputs, but
they will become extremely important in computer
controlled home entertainment or communication or
appliance networks.

FireWire is a fast peripheral interconnect standard
capable of transfer speeds up to 400 Mbs. It works well
for multimedia peripherals such as DV (Digital Video)
cameras and other high-speed devices like the latest
hard disk drives, CD/DVD burners and printers.

A digital interface developed by the IEEE 1394 working
group. Transports data at 100, 200, or 400 Mbps. Can
be used to connect digital television devices together.
IEEE 1394 data transfer can be asynchronous - or
isochronous. Asynchronous transport is the traditional
computer memory-mapped, load and store interface.
Isochronous data channels provide guaranteed data
transport at a pre-determined rate. ...

One format, used a lot by Apple Computer Corp., for
transmitting digital information including video over
wire between components such as between a computer
and a monitor. Every analog to digital conversion
results in some loss of quality, therefore it is
advantageous to transmit video digitally to any
component (such as a scaler) that processes video
digitally. It is not very common in consumer video
applications because it currently does not support
HDCP copy protection.
