events pages here & online at our website as there are
some pretty incredible things coming your way to attend.
Im going to keep this months letter short so that I can
share some phenomenal news that is near & dear to
our hearts here at Thunder Roads Virginia. As we were
getting ready to print this magazine, the news broke open
with headlines such as these:
Last U.S. Prisoner Freed in Swap for Guantanamo
Detainees
Bowe Bergdahl, a Taliban captive since 2009, has
been freed
Sgt Bowe Bergdahl - America is Waiting for You
Bowe Bergdahl, U.S. soldier held in Afghanistan,
freed in swap
In Prisoner Exchange, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl Released
After Nearly 5 Years in Taliban Captivity
Hes FREE, Hes SAFE. He will be HOMESOON!
This poster says it all:
By the time this magazine is out on the
streets, the news of
Sgt. Bowe Bergdahls
release will have made
it around the globe.
We just wanted to say
THANK YOU to all
of our readers and
friends who supported
the efforts & helped to
spread the word about
Sgt. Bowe over the
past couple of years since we started following his story
of captivity, thanks to our good friend, Patrick Hughes.
Patrick cant thank you enough for bringing this story to
our magazine & asking us to help in the efforts of spreading the word about Sgt. Bowe so that one day Washington
would make that move to bring him home.that day has
finally arrived.
Happy Trails everyone Stay safe out there ~ Kelly ~

Colonial Beach Bike Fest! - Colonial Beach, VA
The 1st Annual Colonial Beach Bike Fest will be held October 9-12, 2014.
This event will feature a variety of activities throughout that weekend including
vendors, live music, bike demos and much more! How it all beganThe
idea of a Bike Fest has probably been crossing the minds of bikers in the
area as well as businesses in the local Colonial Beach community for years.
However, it just took a couple of local business owners along with the general
manager at All American Harley-Davidson and disc jockey Ripley from 97.7
The Rocket to address the topic over dinner and drinks one evening, for this
event to hit the ground running and the rest is history. Colonial Beach is the
perfect destination for a bike Fest because its centrally located to numerous
biker communities in the Mid-Atlantic Region, has an awesome layout to
accommodate the festivities as well as beautiful riding scenery and climate
in the month of October! Bringing the Colonial Beach Bike Fest to life, in
October 2014, will bring a community together, raise money for charities,
boost local businesses and become a fun tradition for bikers all over the East
Coast! Make plans now to join in the fun and youll be able to say you were
at the FIRST Colonial Beach Bike Fest years down the road! http://www.

Hokie Friends,
After the tragedy of April 16, 2007 a graduate of the
Class of 1983 Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech wanted to
give back something to the Hokie Community to show his
support. He had his 2007 Harley Davidson Electra Glide
Classic painted in a custom VT paint theme and then organized an annual ride to Blacksburg to help raise awareness
and funds for the Va Tech Foundation 32 Named Memorial
Endowments Fund. This endowment provides funds in the
names of each of the 32 victims for deserving students to
attend Va Tech, thereby forever perpetuating the names of
those lost on that fateful day in April 2007. Our goal is to
raise a minimum of $100,000 in memory of each of those
lost on April 16 2007.
The rides have become an annual event on the last
Saturday in April. The ride grows each year to 100-150+
bike participating annually. Each rider is asked to donate
$32 that will go to the 32 Named Memorial Endowments.
The motorcycle rides leave from Manassas, Richmond, and
Hampton Virginia at 8 am on the last Saturday of April, and
makes several stops along their various routes. All the rides
join together in Troutville, VA, and proceed via LEO escort
to Blacksburg arriving around 3:30 p.m. A short ceremony is
held on the VA Tech Drill Field where all donations are given
to the VA Tech Foundation. This year we were honored to
have two of the recipients of scholarships from this endowment on hand for the presentation. Dinner and raffles were
held afterwards.
We are asking VA Tech alumni, our local business partners, VT fans, and friends to provide a small donation which
will also help ensure deserving students receive necessary
financial aid while preserving the memory of those lost on

OBAMA ADMINISTRATIONS GROW AMERICA ACT

AMERICA Act; President Obamas blueprint for a model
transportation bill, which happens to include a push for
mandatory motorcycle helmet laws nationwide! Specifically,
buried in the Obama Administrations 350-page proposal,
found under Title IV -- Highway And Motor Vehicle Safety,
in SEC. 4004: Amendment to Motorcyclist Safety Grant
Criteria, the GROW AMERICA Act would amend Section
405(f) of title 23, United States Code by inserting the following: SUPPORT ACTIVITY -- The (Transportation) Secretary
or the Secretarys designee may engage in activities with
States and State legislators to consider proposals related
to motorcycle helmet use laws. The time to act is NOW!
This new highway bill is under immediate consideration
as the current two-year Moving Ahead for Progress in the
21st Century Act (MAP-21) expires in September, but the
Highway Trust Fund -- the main funding source for most
state and local transportation projects -- is headed toward
insolvency and is expected to run out of money as early as
July. So contact your Congressional representatives today,

LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL WOULD PREVENT YOUR
MOTORCYCLE FROM TESTIFYING AGAINST YOU Data
collected from so-called Black Box devices can be used
against you in a court of law, and most people dont even
realize it. Thats why U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (DMN)wants to change the language of the Driver Privacy Act
bill to protect all information recorded by event data recorders installed on all motor vehicles, including motorcycles.
The way S. 1925is currently written grants privacy only for
data the government requires to be collected. Currently
the government does not require black boxes on motorcycles, only passenger vehicles, trucks and buses. But some
current motorcycle models are equipped with the recording
devices. A similar bill in the House (H.R. 2414) is worded
that any data recorded on any event data recorder in an
automobile or motorcycle shall be considered the property
of the owner of the automobile or motorcycle. Under current law, Insurance companies, law enforcement and auto
rental agencies can access the data on the device and can
use it as evidence against the driver/owner in legal proceedings. Data recorders collect a wide range of information on
crashes, including whether the brakes were applied, the
speed at the time of impact, the steering angle, and whether
seat belt circuits were shown as Buckled or Unbuckled
at the time of the crash. Fourteen states have statutes that
restrict access to the event data recorder or limit the use of
recovered EDR information.

GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION NOTES REDUCED MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association projects that the number
of motorcyclist fatalities fell by 7% last year, the second decline in five years, despite an increase in motorcycle sales
in 2013. The report, Spotlight on Highway Safety, based its
findings on motorcyclist fatality counts reported to the GHSA
by all 50 states and the District of Columbia for the first
nine months of 2013, and indicated that motorcycle fatalities are projected up in 13 states, down in 35 states and
D.C., and to remain the same in two states compared with
the first nine months of 2012. Noting bad weather the first
six months of 2013, the association projects that the number of motorcyclists killed last year will total 4,610, down
from 4,957 in 2012 and nearly identical to the 2011 figure
of 4,612. Meanwhile, new motorcycle sales ended the year
with a 1.4% overall increase, up from 452,386 total units in
2012 to 458,972 last year, bringing total U.S. motorcycle
registrations to a record 9 million nationwide. The Governors Association also noted that the use of helmets dropped
to 60% in 2012 down from 66% in 2011, citing that only 19
states now require helmets for all riders.
GAS PRICES RELATE TO FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS Researchers have found a strong relationship
between gasoline prices and motorcycle fatalities: As gas
prices rise, so do the number of fatalities, and falling gas
prices tend to be mirrored by reduced numbers of motorcycle deaths. An analysis by the National Safety Council
showed a strong correlation between gasoline prices and
motorcycle fatalities, charting the trend since 1976. Safety
experts speculate that higher gas prices encourage people
to use fuel-efficient motorcycles instead of cars. With new
unit sales increasing when gas prices go up, there are more
people riding and potentially more inexperienced riders on
the road.
NEW MICHIGAN LAW LIMITS TEMPORARY MOTORCYCLE PERMITS Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has signed
legislation that encourages motorcycle operators to apply
for a full operating endorsement by limiting their ability to
obtain temporary training permits. The move is aimed at improving motorcycle safety standards in the state. Sponsored
by Representative Bradford Jacobsen (R-Oxford), House
Bill 4781 allows a motorcyclist to apply for a temporary
instruction permit (TIP) only twice during a 10-year period,
starting next January. Previously, there was no limit to the
number of times a person could be granted a temporary
permit, so many operators would apply every riding season
as an alternative to obtaining their full cycle endorsement,
taking advantage of the loophole in the law to avoid taking
required testing or training. This bill will help prevent abuse
of the current motorcycle permitting process, ultimately
ensuring more motorcyclists are trained to operate their
vehicles in the safest manner possible, the governor said.

NEW HAMPSHIRE SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS ANTIPOLICE LICENSE PLATE The high court in the Live Free
or Die state has ruled in favor of free speech on a personalized license plate that reads; COPSLIE. David Montenegro
forced the issue by suing the New Hampshire Division of
Motor Vehicles (DMV) when it refused to accept his request
filed four years ago for the personalized plate. A reasonable
person would find COPSLIE offensive to good taste, a May
12, 2010 DMV ruling explained. Montenegro filed for reconsideration and received the same response, so in August that
year he decided to apply, in order, for COPSLIE, GR8GOVT,
LUVGOVT, GOVTSUX, SEALPAC and GOVTLAZ. The progovernment license plate, GR8GOVT, was immediately approved. He used the approval of one message over another
as evidence that his state and federal constitutional right to
free speech was being trampled. The state supreme court
framed the question as an issue of private speech, the plates
message, on government-owned property, the license plate
itself. The justices agreed with Montenegro that the regulation
cited by the DMV was unconstitutionally vague because it
was left up to the whim of employees to decide what messages were acceptable.

What happens when ethanol blended fuel mixes with water?

Tell your representative to cosponsor H.R. 1462 today!
A study involving several state environmental agencies and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sought
the answer to that question after a
compliance inspector with the Petroleum Program in the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality noticed
odd corrosion reactions in some of
the sumps for the underground fuel
tanks(Wilson, et al., 2011).

This troubling study raises even more

concern about ethanol in fuel, now
that the EPA has publicly acknowledged that ethanol blends can damage internal combustion engines not
designed for its use by increasing
exhaust temperatures and indirectly
causing component failures.

The EPA needs to stick to its proposal
to roll back the requirement for wider
distribution and use of E15 under its
Renewable Fuel Standard. However,
even the EPA rollback is only a shortterm fix. For a longer-term solution,
we need Congress to address the
RFS legislatively.
The AMA supports H.R. 1462. This
bill would reduce the total RFS by 79
percent in 2014 and reduce the RFS
by other significant percentages each
year until 2022, when the total RFS
is reduced by 42 percent. That is, the
bill adjusts the mandate to 21 billion
gallons in 2022, rather than 36 billion
gallons.
Moreover, H.R. 1462 rescinds the
EPAs E15 waivers and caps the
amount of ethanol content in gasoline
at E10.
The AMA supports this common sense
solution to make sure that motorcyclists have access to safe fuels.

The engine purrs beneath you as a string of motorcycles snakes through the hills in front of you. With a
quick look in the mirror, you see your buddy following close behind with a smile on his face that matches yours. The camaraderie forms because, at just this moment, youre all on the same page.
Thats what a group ride is all about. Its an opportunity to share the open road and wonderful scenery
with other like-minded people.
But like most motorcycle experiences, this one is best enjoyed by following a few simple guidelines
that keep everyone safe. And thats the idea behind a new videotape put out by the Motorcycle Safety
Foundation that focuses on group riding. You can get your own copy by visiting the MSF website at:
www.msf-usa.org, but here are a few tips from the countrys foremost motorcycle safety experts.
1. The first thing you want to do is organize the ride. This can be as informal as standing around in a
parking lot, or as formal as a special meeting to hand out maps and cellphone numbers.
2. Remember that riding in a group does not mean you surrender any decision-making when it
comes to your safety. Ride your own ride, and dont go any faster than you feel comfortable going.
3. When picking your route and the stops youll make along it, consider the stamina of the group, the
experience of all the riders, and the limits of the motorcycles in the group. Remember, these are your
friends. If its going to be a long ride, be sure to take a few breaks along the way.
4. Youll need to communicate while on the ride, so make sure everyone knows the signals youll use.
5. When creating your formation, its wise to have your experienced riders at the lead and running
sweep. Consider positioning the less-experienced riders immediately behind the leader. This allows
the front rider to adjust the pace if necessary.
6. Ideally, the sweep rider will have a cellphone to call for help if a motorcycle is disabled, or if there
has been an accident.
7. If the goal of the ride is to keep the group together, the leader should only go at the pace of the
least-experienced rider.
8. While riding, dont fixate on the motorcycle in front of you. Instead, remember your basic training.
Look well through the turn to where you want to go.
9. If the group is riding faster than you are comfortable with, let the sweep rider know youre dropping out and ride at your own pace. So you may reach your destination a few seconds behind the others, but you will get there, and thats whats important. Keep in mind, its all about fun.
10. All riders are also responsible for making sure their motorcycles are mechanically up to the task. Before you even meet up with the group, make sure youve got
plenty of fuel in the tank, and that youve taken care of all those maintenance issues. Not sure what to check? Use T-CLOCS. You really dont want to be the reason
for stopping the group for something mechanical you could have prevented.
11. If its going to be a large group, consider establishing a buddy system among the riders, or divide the group into smaller five- or seven-rider packs. That way, if
something goes wrong, you dont have 25 motorcycles sitting on the side of a busy highway. Also, smaller groups can more easily navigate through city streets.
12. On the road, motorcyclists should have at least a 2-second cushion in front and behind them. If you want to keep the group tight, consider a staggered formation.
Leave enough room per lane so each rider can maneuver side-to-side if need be. Avoid side-by-side formations as they shrink your space cushion.
13. Trikes and sidecars should stay in the center of the lane, and should be given the same amount of cushion as if they were a car.
14. As turns get sharper, or as visibility decreases, move back to a single file formation. Youll also want to use single file when entering or exiting a highway, at toll
booths, or when roads have a rough or questionable surface.
15. At intersections where youve come to a stop, tighten the formation to side-by-side to take up less space. As the light turns green, or when traffic opens up, the
bike on the left proceeds through the intersection first.
16. Remember we share the road with many other vehicles, and its against the law to block an intersection.
17. When parking, try to get the group off the roadway as quickly as possible. If you can, arrange in advance to have pull-through parking at your destination, or at
the very least, make sure there is ample parking for your size group.

getting ready to go out for a ride, or as serious as getting
bad news from the doctor. To be honest with you, 2014
has not been the most encouraging of years for me. Due
to cutbacks at my primary job I now work weekends,
which makes it difficult for me to serve the church where
I work part-time. And it really gets in the way of enjoying
weekend events. But I remind myself that I still have a job
and that God is providing for my needs.
Then, as I began writing this article I learned of the
death of an old friend; Bob Bopper Gaynor, of the
Roadducks Another dose of discouragement. I was just
telling someone how I was expecting to see him at an H-D
open house over Rolling Thunder weekend (I made sure
that they gave me that off!).
Discouragement comes to all of us. And it often affects
our ability to see God working in our lives, which only
makes things even worse. And its not only a problem
for those walking without God, but it affects Believers as
well Yes, even preachers. If you read the Old Testament
book of 1 Kings you will find the story of Elijah, a mighty
man of God, suffering discouragement to the point that he
wanted to die.
Have you ever been there?
Are you ready for the good part?
While discouraging things will always be a part of our
lives, there is a way to have victory over discouragement.
Jesus Christ canand willlead you through those times
of difficulty and help you to find peace and comfort.
Elijah, the same
man who was so
distraught that he
sought death, was
able to turn his trust
to God and saw the
mighty things that
the Lord could do
through him.
Isaiah 40: 28-31
tells us The Lord
is the everlasting
God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow
tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power
of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and
young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the
Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like
eagles
I dont know about you, but I want to soar on wings
like eagles too. Yep, this has not been the best of years,
but God has been right here with me the entire way,

and I know that He has plans for me. And no matter what
potholes life throws at me, with Christ with me I will not only
survive them, I will thrive despite them. I wear a patch on
my vest that says Faith is not believing that God can, its
knowing that He will. That pretty much sums it up for me.
God has a plan for your life. Remember that when you
are facing the difficulties that come into your path. And
remember that when you trust in God, those difficulties will
only make you stronger. Put your faith and trust in Jesus.
Ride with Him and soar on eagles wings.

Mom, may I take the dog for a walk around the block?
Mom replies, No, because she is in heat.
Whats that mean? asked little Suzie.
Go ask your father. I think hes in the garage.
Little Suzie goes to the garage and says, Dad, may I take
Belle for a walk around the block? I asked Mom, but she
said Belle was in heat, and to come to ask you.
Dad said, Bring Belle over here. He took a rag, soaked it
with turpentine, and scrubbed the dogs backside with it to
disguise the scent, and said OK, you can go now, but keep
Belle on the leash and only go one time round the
block. The little girl left and returned a few minutes later
with no Belle on the leash. Totally surprised, Dad asked,
Wheres Belle? Little Suzie said, She ran out of gas about
halfway down the block, so another dog is pushing her
home.
A flat-chested young lady read an article in a magazine
that stated Dr. Bumbutu in Africa could enlarge your breast
without surgery. So she decided to go to Dr. Bumbutu to
see if he could help her. Dr. Bumbutu advised her, Every
day after your shower, rub your chest and say, Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies! She did this faithfully for
several months, and to her utter amazement she grew a
terrific D-cup rack! One morning she was running late, got
on the bus, and in a panic realized she had forgotten her
morning ritual. Frightened she might lose her lovely boobs
if she didnt recite the ritualistic rhyme, she stood right there
in the middle aisle of the bus, closed her eyes and said,
Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies.
A guy sitting nearby looked at her and asked Oh! Are you
a patient of Dr. Bumbutus? Yes I am.. How did you know?
He winked and whispered, Hickory dickory dock...
When little Tony Soprano returned home from elementary

Why? asks the father? The teacher asked How much

dad. Yeah, but then she asked me How much is 3 x 2?
Whats the f***ing difference? asks the father. Thats what
I said!, little Tony yells.

Woman: How much do you pay per beer?

Man: $5.00 which includes a tip
Woman: And how long have you been drinking?
Man: Approx. 20 years
Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have 3 beers a day
which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year,
it would be approximately $5,400. correct?
Man: Yes, sounds correct
Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for
inflation, the past 20 years puts your
spending at $108,000, correct?
Man: Again, sounds correct
Woman: Do you know that if you didnt drink so much beer,
that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for
the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?
Man: Do you drink beer?
Woman: No, I do not.
Man: Then where the hell is your Ferrari?

A biker took a couple of tokes off a joint and left a bar parking lot, unaware that a cop was staking the parking lot out
looking for drunk drivers. A quarter mile down the road, the
cop pulled the biker over. He walked up to him and said
Hey son, just how high are you? the biker replied, No, no,
no officer, you are supposed to say; Hi, how are you?.
Youll be fine, the doctor said after finishing the young
womans surgery. But, she asked, How long will it be before I am able to have a normal sex life again doctor?
The surgeon seemed to pause and his face reddened as a
small tear ran down his cheek from the corner of his eye.
The girl was alarmed.
Whats the matter Doctor? I will be all right, wont I? (a

He replied, Yes, youll be fine. Its just that no one has ever
asked me that after having their tonsils out.

The People Of Walmart

WHIZ KID: Why walk a few feet and piss in

the Walmart bathrooms which are open 24/7?
Where is the fun in that? Good thing you
opened those car doors, very sneaky there, we
definitely cant see what youre doing and if we
cant then the police definitely cant either.

TIE ONE ON: Im sure our friends over at

WhiteTrashRepairs.com would appreciate
this bit of ingenuity. Seriously though, I dont
want to be too hard on the guy because lets
face it, its considerate of him not to give us
a glimpse of the alternative to keeping his
pants up.

BARACK BOTTOM PRICES: Is there anything

more American than the President of the United
States inside a Walmart? I mean, maybe if a
bald eagle was chilling on his shoulders that
would put it over the top. I dont know. Maybe
he just felt like having the two lightning rods of
Health Care together at the same time?

NUMBER TWO: Not really putting the vanity

in a vanity plate I see. But, on the other hand I
value honesty and If I were a cop and saw you
speeding Id probably let you go because weve
all been on that race track home at some point.

ON THE WINGS OF LOVE!: Red Bull gives you

wings, but apparently so does Billy Bobs custom
car detail located in a friendly neighborhood
garage near you. Payable in Keystone 6 packs.

A WOMANS TOUCH: My man! Whats going

on?! Looking all FABULOUS with the wifey too!
It must take you two forever to get ready and
leave the house! But ya know what? Totally
worth it.

VIVA LA MULLET! This could be one of the top

3 mullets of all time! Are you kidding me? Its so
short and businesslike in the front, and when you
get around back there is a party that Hugh Hefner
would be jealous of. Fantastic.

THE BEER OLYMPICS!: Pffft, who needs the

Olympics in Rio? Here in Murrica our summer
games are the Beer Olympics and this guy is
the Michael Phelps of rockin out!

TRY AGAIN: I dont know what that is, but Im

like 110% sure youre not wearing it right and
like 72% sure its not even clothing. Im thinking
its like a drawstring bag or something. Whatever it is, youre not doing it right.

United Nations General Assembly Calls For Global Mandatory Helmet Law
Recently the 68th session of the United Nations voted to
approve a non-binding resolution entitled Improving Global
Road Safety, which sounds innocent enough, but when closely
examined, has some very disturbing ideas concerning motorcyclists, motorcycles, and helmet laws.
The most disturbing directive is to encourage Member States
(countries participating in the UN) to enact comprehensive
legislation on key risk factors for road traffic injuries including
the non-use of helmets. Or in other words, universal mandatory
global helmet law. Keep in mind this is a non-binding resolution,
but many countries and legislative bodies take the UNs suggestions very seriously. This is the warning shot across the bow.
The United Nations is coming for motorcyclists.
That is why it is so unfortunate that Americas own Permanent
Representative to the United Nations, and a member of President Obamas Cabinet voted in support of the resolution. She
even spoke to the General Assembly in strong support of the
resolution.
The non-binding resolution has some other very troubling
issues with regards to motorcyclists. For instance, one of the

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 36

directives claims that there are insufficient policies in place to

protect motorcyclists. The idea that one type of policy would
work for every country in the United Nations is beyond fantasy.
Our diverse global motorcycle community cannot exist under a
one-size fit all approach.
Another section of the resolution recognizes and commends
The UN Economic Commission for Europe and the World
Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations to modify
vehicle regulations to increase safety. This is essential in the
UN calling for global harmonization of policy that could include
helmet laws and universal vehicle anti-tampering measures.
Both of these would devastate the motorcycle community and
aftermarket industry in America.
It is a clear picture of the mindset of the UN to support such
an over-reaching resolution. By muddying the waters with
controversial policies, the UN loses support for some very good
ideas concerning distracted driving and Good Samaritan policies.
The MRF is engaged on this and will keep you informed
about this issue.

GOOD FOR YOU

There was a time when cinnamon was more valuable than

gold. These days, most of us would rather get our hands on
24 karats over 24 ounces a bar over a stick this barkcum-spice has just as much bite as it does bark. The potential health benefits of cinnamon could be stated as nothing
short of astonishing.
Chinese medicine and Ayurveda have long counted cinnamon as a superpower used to treat things such as colds,
indigestion and cramps and also believed to improve energy,
vitality and circulation. Studies have shown that the following
eleven health benefits are associated with this beloved spice:
1. 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower your bad
cholesterol (or LDL).
2. Cinnamon may help treat Type 2 Diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and increasing the amount of insulin
production in the body.
3. Cinnamon has antifungal properties, and its been said
that candida cannot live in a cinnamon environment.
4. Cinnamon can reduce the proliferation of leukemia and
lymphoma cancer cells.
5. Cinnamon has an anti-clotting effect on the blood.
6. Honey and Cinnamon combined have been found to
relieve arthritis pain.
7. When added to food, cinnamon inhibits bacterial growth
and food spoilage, making it a natural food preservative.
8. Just smelling cinnamon boosts cognitive function and
memory.
9. Cinnamon fights the E. coli bacteria in unpasteurized
juices.

Cinnamon

10. Cinnamon has been found to be an effective natural

remedy for eliminating headaches and migraine relief.
11. Cinnamon can also help stabilize blood sugar (which is
great for weight loss). A couple of dashes in your morning tea
or cereal is all it takes!
This info is not to suggest that you start guzzling the cinnamon as it has been found to be toxic in large doses. But,
it is encouraged to put a little pinch (or stick) here and there
in places you might otherwise have overlooked (in your tea or
coffee, added to savory dishes, etc.) if not for your overall
health, for its undeniably enchanting aroma and flavor.

How I Spent My Winter Vacation (Part 1)

By Joe Sparrow
This past year, I started my riding season in February of 2013; I left St. Louis on my bike when there was
10 inches of snow on the ground. That was when my
trip started and I hadnt been back to St. Louis but two
separate nights and I was there for less than 24 hours.
Im pretty much constantly on the road. I work for J & P
Cycles doing rallies for them as an independent contractor. Wherever their 18 wheeler goes I meet them at the
rallies and sell parts. I help set the truck up at the rally,
layout the parts, sell for a week or so, tear the display
down, pack-up the truck and meet them at the next
event. When I have time in between events, I also work
for them at the National Motorcycle Museum.
I normally like to spend the winter months down south
in Florida or anywhere in the southern US from California to Florida. I generally have 2 1/2 months of winter
time off or I work at the museum some times. However,
this past winter was very different. At the Warf Rat Rally
in Nova Scotia, Kevin Beanre told me he was going to
write a book about travelling in Asia. He planned to go
over there for 4 months with no prior research and let
the book write itself. If you go with no research that is
certainly what happens. If you know Beanre, he is quite
the character anywhere he goes. In December, Kevin
was going to be a judge at the David Mann Chopperfest in Ventura, California and I finished my last job in
Galveston. Since winter was approaching, I decided to
go to California. I ran into him and some other friends
that I knew were going to be at that bike show. When I

got there and met Kevin, he asked me if I had any money. I told him I had 40 or 50 bucks if he wanted to borrow
it. He said no, no man, do you have enough money to go
to Viet Nam? I said well yah and he said lets go. He was
getting ready to leave in two days. I wasnt ready for that
and said Id have to think about that.
So I spent some time with a buddy in San Diego then
started heading east. I got to Phoenix when I received
a call from my buddy in San Diego, who I told about
Beanres trip. He told me if I wanted to go, I could leave
my bike at his house and he would take me to the airport
and pick me up when I come back. I rode back to San
Diego the next day and that gave me 2 days to get ready
for my trip to Viet Nam. I had to get a visa squared away,
get an airline ticket on short notice, get my credit cards
to work overseas, and securing enough cash that would
be needed. By the way I took $3000 with me and came
back with $800 of it. That was how I decided to go to
Viet Nam. It was not a country I would have decided to
go to on my own, everyone has a vision of Viet Nam that
turns out to be totally false. Viet Nam has the friendliest
people I have met in my life, anywhere. It is just a beautiful country and they dont hate Americans over there.
A couple of days after Christmas, Kevin Beanre met
me at the Saigon (Ho Chi Min City) airport. My plane was
about two hours late and I was a little worried that Id
miss him, but he was there and we took a cab ride to the
area known as the tourist district. That area had a lot
of cheap hotels that were generally $10 to 12.50 a night
and you park your motorcycles in the hotel lobby. My

first impression was all the traffic and 90% of all vehicles
were motorcycles. If you havent seen any videos of the
traffic in the city, it is unbelievable. It is total chaos, but
controlled chaos. If you decide to cross the street, you
just start walking and do not deviate your speed at all. If
you hesitate, you are going to get hit. You take a steady
speed walking, stick to it and people will go around you.
The same is true of crossing on a motorcycle. Never,
ever deviate your speed.
The motorcycles in Viet Nam can only be 175 cc or
less. You even need to have a special permit to have a
175, so you dont see many 175cc motorcycles. Everything is generally 50cc or 100cc size. Sometime people
will put big bore kits on them to get by. I did see one
Sportster there and two Ducatis the whole time I was
in Viet Nam. If you have a lot of money, you can have a
bigger bike and pay the cops off as needed. Kevin and
I bought motorcycles from a guy that buys used bikes,
fixes them up and sells them to tourists like us. Mine
was a 2006 Honda Win which was 100cc. I looked the
bike over and told them it needs this and that and they
fixed anything I saw wrong with it. Beanres bike was a
Chinese knock off; he paid $300 for his bike. The optimum bike to buy is the Honda because it is much more
dependable; I paid $350 for mine. Kevin took his bike

and tried to pop wheelies with it, the next day he had to
bring it back and have a new clutch put in. We beat the
hell out of those motorcycles.
There were some language issues. Most people know
hello, I never learned the Vietnamese word for it because everyone uses the English word. Everyone says
hello and how are you over there. Generally that is all
the English that they know. If needed, they would go out
of their way to find someone that spoke English who
could translate for them. There were a lot of gestures
and I drew a lot to let people know what I wanted, and
that worked pretty good for me.
Kevin and I were accepted very well, people would go
way, way out of their way to help us with anything we
needed. I was afraid that they would hate Americans, but
no, they love Americans over there. They love all of the
foreign tourists; of course we are spending money. But
it wasnt just about that, you could tell they genuinely
accepted you and liked you. It is the friendliest country I
have ever seen in my life.
