3-Year Plan
Student Profile:
Student is a 15 year old male in grade 9. Upon entering into high school, his interests include
working on his parents farm, fixing his dirt bike, and other hands-on projects. Recently he has
expressed an interest in working with wood and construction tools, with a specific interest in
cabinet making and kitchen remodelling. He receives average grades in school, but excels in
the math and science based courses. The student has expressed an interest in pursuing a career
in construction trades with a focus on carpentry, with the possibility of owning his own
company one day.
3 Year Plan Rationale:
This 3 year, 15 module/course plan, aims to provide the student with a flexible guided pathway
for course options in the Trades, Manufacturing and Transportation Cluster. This pathway will
include courses from the construction, financial management, and design studies streams.
Drawing from a number of clusters (TMT, BIT, & MDC) will provide the student with a variety of
knowledge and skill sets applicable to entering into a profession of carpentry/construction,
while also providing some insight into business management and development.
This plan is flexible because it can be redesigned and modified based on the interests of the
student. The first 5 courses will serve as an introductory base, where the student will gain
general knowledge of the 3 clusters drawn from for this individual plan. In the second and third
year of the plan the student will gain a more specialized education in the clusters of his interest.
From there, the student can modify course selections to better suit his interests and ultimately
achieve skills and knowledge needed for an occupation or post-secondary program of his
choosing.
A 3-year plan would be suitable for this student because it would provide engaging, skill based
courses, with hands-on learning opportunities. This program allows for knowledge and skills to
be applied outside of a classroom environment and gain first-hand experience in the industry
through internships. The occupational options the student would be exposed to during the
process of the 3 year plan would include (but not be limited to):
Carpentry first period apprentice (Skill Pathway)
Cabinet maker
Residential framer
Business Owner
2

Potential projects during this 3 year plan include:
Transforming common building materials safely into useful products.
Producing a built-in or modular cabinet
Developing shop drawings
Building cabinet doors & drawers
Research, design and build a product suitable for mass production and marketing
Build and install a simple cabinet/countertop
Develop a floor/wall cabinet plan

Reflection
The peer share process taught me that there a number of varied pathways that present such
flexible options that there is no right or concrete pathway to create or choose. The feedback I
received was mostly positive, about my layout and the flexibility of my pathway. One
constructive comment I did received was to elaborate more on the assessment methods and
how the specialized program options connect to the pathway I had laid out.
