LEVEL 2 TEACHING ASSISTANT

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


The post holder must carry out his/her responsibilities within the guidelines of the
Derbyshire County Council agreed framework and the Education Act 2002, with
particular regard to the regulations made under Section 133 and the statutory
responsibilities of the Governing Bodies of Schools.

(a) Contribute to the management of pupil behaviour

1. Work closely with the class teacher to contribute to the management of pupil
behaviour, maintain order and an appropriate working environment, including
implementation of the school’s behaviour policies.
2. Employ strategies for behaviour management and report any problems to
teacher.
3. Report any progress towards targets for children with Behaviour Support
Plans. Provide level of attention appropriate to pupil’s needs, modifying
approach to ensure that desired outcomes are achieved.
4. Deal with any disruption and report to teacher any difficulties that you are
unable to overcome.

(b) Establish and maintain relationships with individuals and groups

1. Establish and promote productive relationships with pupils, acting as a role


model and setting high expectations.
2. Promote the inclusion of all pupils within the classroom and school.

(c) Assist in preparing learning environment and support pupils during


learning activities

1. Liaise closely with teachers and other relevant agencies regarding the work set
for a class/group. Assist with setting out learning materials.
2. Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other relevant
professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils’ learning and
progress.
3. Provide help with learning tasks by effectively communicating the work set by
the class teacher to the pupils and ensure that pupils are aware of the teacher’s
expectations.
4. Encourage pupils to interact and work cooperatively with others to ensure all
pupils are engaged on the set task.
5. Feeding back to teacher on progress made.
6. Encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning and
promoting development of self-esteem.

(d) Observe and report on pupil performance and contribute to maintaining


pupil records

1. Carry out observations after consultation with teacher about purpose.


2. Record findings in agreed format.
3. Update relevant records at agreed time intervals.
4. Ensure that contributions are accurate, complete and up to date.
(e) Contribute to planning of learning activities

1. Discuss expected learning outcomes with teacher and agree upon success
criteria.
2. Provide feedback for teacher on outcomes of learning activity.

(f) Support use of ICT in the classroom

1. Prepare equipment for use. Support use of equipment.

(g) Help pupils to develop literacy and numeracy skills

1. Working with individuals and groups on number or literacy tasks.


2. Supporting access to the curriculum through provision of support for literacy/
numeracy difficulties.

(h) Provide support for multi-lingual/bilingual pupils

1. Explain purpose of activities to pupils. Agree with teacher and other


professionals strategies for supporting pupil.
2. Help pupils to access curriculum and support development of target language.
3. Utilise cross-curricula opportunities to develop target language skills.
4. Deal with the challenges of the language demands of learning activities in
ways that maintain pupil confidence and self-esteem.

(i) Promote social and emotional development of pupils

1. Along with other members of the team, help to resolve difficulties between
pupils amicably and with regard to school policies
2. Employ strategies agreed by school via policies to raise self-esteem, such as
rewards system and praise.

(j) Support maintenance of pupil safety

1. Respond to signs of minor health problems, for example with regard to


asthma, allergies, incontinence and diabetes.
2. Report any illness to teacher or other member of staff responsible for dealing
with pupil health.

(k) Contribute to health and well being of pupils

1. Help pupils to adjust in new settings; recognise signs of distress and offer
reassurance.

(l) Liaison with other team members and parents in a professional manner

1. Interact appropriately and professionally with teachers and other colleagues


and parents/carers.
2. Refer matters beyond competence and role to other professionals in school.
3. Reassure parents who express concerns about their children.
4. Ensure that parents’ requests to see a teacher are dealt with promptly.
5. Pass on concerns about pupils to relevant people in the school.
6. Accompany teaching staff and pupils on educational visits.
7. Contribute to the overall ethos, aims and work of the school.
8. Be aware of, uphold and contribute towards the development of the school’s
policies and procedures.
9. Participate in appropriate school-based meetings and training activities.
10. Undertake any administrative duties relevant and appropriate to this post.
11. Maintain confidentiality at all times and to observe Data Protection
Guidelines.
12. Understand and comply with the school’s equal opportunities and other
policies.

(m) Review and develop own professional practice

1. Setting personal targets and attending relevant courses/in-service training.


2. Take an active part in appraising their own work against agreed priorities and
targets in accordance with the school’s performance management and
supervision arrangements.

(n) Specific Responsibilities

1. To work under the direction of the Reception Teacher and any other
Foundation Stage Leader as required.
