HYMN 129 (Blue Hymnal)
Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us Ebenezer

Text: Janie Alford, 1979; Tune: EBENEZER 8.7.8.7 D, Thomas John Williams, 1890.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (IN UNISON)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and
deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

GLORIA PATRI 579 (Blue Hymnal) Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, Amen.

At this time, children 9 years old and younger are invited to come to the front of the sanctuary with our volunteer leaders.
The children and their leaders will worship in the chapel.
They will be in "Children's Church" for the remainder of the morning and will meet parents in the social room.

APOSTLES CREED (IN UNISON)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he
ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORDS PRAYER Itunu Adekoya, Deacon

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever. Amen.

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD

ANTHEM Howard Helvey, b. 1968
Anthem to the Trinity
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart.
This is my Fathers world, He shines in all thats fair.
This is my Fathers world, and to my listening ears
all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Fathers world! I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees,
of skies and seas. His hand the wonders wrought.
Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature! O Thou of God and man the Son!
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor, Thou my souls glory, joy and crown!
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart. Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move.
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, and make me love Thee as I ought to love.

(The anthem continues; all stand and sing the Doxology with the Chancel Choir.)

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Sunday, June 8, 2014

Those in whom the Spirit comes to live are God's new Temple. They are, individually and
corporately, places where heaven and earth meet.

- N. T. Wright

Holiness, as taught in the Scriptures, is not based upon knowledge on our part. Rather, it
is based upon the resurrected Christ in-dwelling us and changing us into His likeness.

- A. W. Tozer

Some things have to be believed to be seen.
- Madeleine LEngle

MUSIC NOTES

Johann Sebastian Bachs (1685-1750) Eight Little Preludes and Fugues continue to be popular pieces per-
formed by organists in spite of the fact that they were probably written by a minor composer of the
mid-eighteenth century. Even the title page of the only extant source for these pieces has a question
mark after J. S. Bachs name. The prelude opens with a brief overture in a French style before launching
into a toccata. The stately fugue of only two minutes in length builds as additional stops are drawn to cre-
ate a fuller sound.

Today is the Chancel Choirs last Sunday of the season. They will take a break during the summer
months and will return this September. Howard Helvey (b. 1968) serves as organist and choirmaster of
historic Calvary Episcopal Church in Cincinnati. His compositions have been featured on numerous re-
cordings, national television and radio broadcasts, in such eminent concert venues as New Yorks Carne-
gie Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall (LA), Chicagos Orchestra Hall, the Meyerson Symphony Center
(Dallas), the White House, the National Cathedral (Washington, D. C.), and many locations throughout
Europe and Asia. Todays anthem is a beautifully compiled trio of hymns that leads directly into the
singing of the Doxology.

The organ works of Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) occupy a pivotal position in the history of
English organ music, straddling two eras. Musically, however, they point more to the future than to the
past and remind us not only that Wesley was a contemporary of Mendelssohn, but also that his ears
were receptive to everything he heard in the London of his youth. Wesley suffered a serious fracture of
his right leg which affected his compositions for the organ. The use of unexpected chords or sudden
shifts of key, and slowly rising bass lines, as heard in Choral Song, were attributed to Wesleys temporary
medical condition.
