3-D Peer Educators


What is 3-D Peer Educators?

STARs 3-D Peer Educators is a program that offers young men and women ages 14-17 the
opportunity to gain valuable skills to become effective educators and change agents in
their community. Members commit to develop and deliver programming targeted at
reducing relationship violence and promoting healthy relationship skills among youth in
Baton Rouge.

To accomplish this, 3-D Peer Educators are trained in various topics, including oppression,
gender identity, sexual trauma, and the cycle of violence to enhance their understanding
of relationship violence and its alternative, healthy relationships. Members have the
opportunity to build skills including leadership, facilitation, media literacy, bystander
intervention, outreach, team building, public speaking, and peer communication while
earning a stipend.

What would I do as a member of 3-D Peer Educators?

Responsibilities of members include:

Attending an introductory 24 hours of training in July 2014.
Attending mandatory monthly workshops one Saturday per month from 10am-3pm
during months September 2014 June 2015.
Planning and attending at least two social outings.
Conducting presentations for peers and adults on the topics of relationship violence,
sexual assault, and healthy relationship practices.
Participating in the development of other types of community education
programming.
Planning a relevant school or community action project to lead after completing
participation in 3-D.
Maintaining regular communication with STAR staff, including checking and
responding to emails.
Maintaining professional behavior when acting as a representative of 3-D.

Unfortunately, we cannot choose everyone who applies. We will interview and select
students who:

Are aged 14-17 (Students can start the year at 17 and turn 18, but must be at least 14
for work purposes).
Will commit to 100% attendance for all program requirements.
Are passionate about ending relationship violence and promoting healthy
relationships through community education.
Are willing to grow and develop skills to become effective educators.
Are willing to behave as role models for other youth.
Are open to learning new things and new ways of thinking, and able to respectfully
collaborate with a diverse group of individuals.

It is mandatory that participants attend all sessions. Many of the sessions will be hosted at
STARs office, though some will be hosted at community sites throughout Baton Rouge.

STAR staff will send weekly email updates to 3-D members, mentors, and parents to keep
everyone informed about workshop and session details.


If I am selected, how much would I be paid?

Students may earn up to $500 in stipends during the program. Stipends will be paid in
November 2014 and June 2015.

Prospective 3-D peer educators will receive consideration without discrimination based on

handicap, sexual orientation, citizenship status or any condition prescribed by state or
local law.
