Empire Of Light is the debut album by Ylium, a duo from Venice, Italy and
trained by !lessandro "a#a$$ana (guitars, keyboards, drum machines,
computer programming ) and %arco &odella (drums, percussion),
accompanied by other musicians during live performances. The two members
which were initially three with 'iulio &ama$$ina, who has since left the
pro!ect for personal reasons they come from the garage"indie rock scene.
#ager to broaden their musical hori$ons by e%perimenting beyond simple
electrical instruments and by virtue of a growing interest on the part of
!lessandro "a#a$$ana in I&', the band begins to program computers and set
up drum machines to incorporate these devices during the sessions in the
rehearsal room. (uitars, bass and drums are not absolutely set aside, since the
ultimate goal is always to give birth to a perfect match between what you plan
and what you play.
The result of all this is )#mpire of *ight)+ an album that mi%es e%perimental
rock, electronica and some avantgarde. ,lthough the background music of
reference is essentially -ritish and (erman contemporary, there are elements of
new wave , ./0s krautrock, %iles (a#is and some minimalist composers of our
time, such as )te#e &eich. The processing of the disc began in the summer of
1/21, the period in which they recorded and mi%ed the first three tracks, which
initially were part of a selfproduced and and selfdistributed #3, which was
released in 4ebruary of 1/25.
They then composed a do$en songs, with five of these, along with three #p
tracks, included in the album #mpire 6f *ight, which was completed in
4ebruary 1/27. #mpire of *ight was recorded mainly in Treviso. Two songs, A
,it *keptical and ,ad, were recorded in 1/21 at the 8ynchro 8tudio in ,dria by
(iordano 8andalo sound engineer who has more than ten years working
e%perience thanks to winning a contest for bands in which the group
participated in 9uly 1/22 with their previous musical pro!ect.
)$our ife %n &ni'ue Meaning) (the title is the dissolution of ,cronym Y*I:')
is the first single from the Venetian duo+ ) %t stems from an attempt to re-
arrange an old piece of the previous group;, e%plains ,lessandro <ava$$ana
=tr-ing to propose it as a kind of counterpoint to instrumental guitar, drum
machines and wind instruments, and then using it for personal pro.ects/ but
when Marco and 0iulio heard it, the- got ver- intrigued and decided to work

Ylium are ,lessandro <ava$$ana and 'arco >odella. In 1/21, after playing several
years in a garage rock band together with (iulio >ama$$ina, who then left the
pro!ect they started to bring electronic devices into the rehearsal room . The result is
represented by eight tracks that would form #mpire 6f *ight, their debut album+ a
mi% of e%perimental rock, drum machines and avantgarde music.
