Processing:

The formability in cold and hot condition is excellent. The considerably greater strain
hardening compared to plain steel grades demands correspondingly higher forming
forces. Hot forming should be carried out at temperature over 900
o
C.
Metal cutting machining must be performed with tools made of high-quality high-
speed steel (good cooling necessary), or preferably with carbide tools, owing to the
strain hardening and the low thermal conductivity. It is advisable to select relatively
low cutting speeds and feed rates.

Embrittlement:

In the critical temperature range between 600 and 900
o
C, 314 display a marked
tendency towards o-phase embrittlement, meaning that the toughness properties are
reduced after prolonged use in this temperature range. 309 should not be used in
this temperature range. Should embrittlement nonetheless occur, it can be
eliminated by heating to temperature above 1000
o
C.

Welding:

Good weldability using all process

Notes on use:

309 is heat resistant, austenitic steel grade characterized by good high-temperature
strength at elevated temperatures. It can thus primarily be used wherever relatively
high mechanical stresses occur. Application examples: grids, fittings,
supporting/walding beams, axle rollers, blowers, recuperators, super heater parts,
pipe clips.
314 is resistant to scaling in oxidizing atmospheres at up to about 1050
o
C. Being an
austenitic steel grade, 314 is sensitive to SO
2
, and particularly gases containing H
2
S
at temperature in excess of 650
o
C. It also displays slight sensitivity to carburizing
gases at temperature above 900
o
C.
314 should not be used in the temperature range between 600 and 900
o
C owing to
o-phasen embrittlement. Maximum application temperature (Ta max) in air: 1000
o
C.
