Preface

Inwidespreadofevents,thedamsare,orwereintendedtobecompositeandmultipurposestructures.
Retainingofrivercoursesthusformingthepondswhichwouldservetheagriculture,domesticwater
supply,industrialwatersupplythenhydroelectricityproductionremaintobevitalinviewofeconomic
growthofmanycountries.Sometimes,theyareusedforfloodprotectionofdownstreamagricultural
lands,thesettlementsandthecities.

Upontheyoperation,thedamsaredefinedasstructuralandwaterresourcesschemeswhichare
interlacedandmergedintooneterm,whichiscalleddamsengineering.There,structuralgeotechnical
aspectsandhydraulicaspectsaregoverningbothfornewlydevelopedandforthosetoberetrofitted.
Thelattermaybealignedwithnowadaysimpactsofclimatechangestoriverdischargeswhich
increasedfluctuationsmay,tolowerorgreaterextentaffectthepresentlyororiginallydesigneddam
heads,thenthedischargecapacityoftheassociatedspillways,bottomoutlets,poweroutletsandflash
outlets.Contingenttowatershedgeomorphologythentheratioofpondvolumetoannualwatershed
runoff,thesiltationofthepondsmaybelessormoreproneto.

Theforegoingphenomenacanbesuccessfullyemulatedandthenresearchedbymeansofsoftware
appropriatedtostructural,geotechnicalandhydraulicengineering.Thesameappliestosafetyaspects
relativetoaccidentaldamsbreak.

Itwastheauthorstrialtosynthesizethescaleofthesoftwarenowadaysbeinginusefordamprojects.
