The document discusses methods for teaching medical terminology to students. It focuses on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The group developed flashcards with word roots, prefixes, and suffixes on one side and meanings on the other. They also created images to associate terms with visual representations of what they describe. Interactive games, videos and animations were found online to reinforce learning in a fun way. Testing these methods within the group showed they were effective for remembering terms.

Medical school is all about terminology, more exactly medical terms. Lots of them make us think of the Latin and Greek eras. That it why us, the students, are quite scared sometimes of approaching these words. For example Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis which is the full scientific name for a disease that causes inflammation in the lungs owing to the inhalation of very fine silica dust. Many of us would wonder why on Earth would we need to know that term it`s not like there are pacients with this disease everywhere! Therefore we only learn them like a poem without any logic involved. Our team has approached two different and quite important chapters from the book: The respiratory system and the Cardiovascular system. By reading and trying to understand what these systems consist of , we have realized that it is not as simple as we thought, therefore it is not going to be easy to teach these medical terms to others! We have encountered many difficult and different words but , after a group brainstorming we have found ways to teach others what we have learned. Flashcards. We thought to write on a side of the card a suffix/root/prefix and on the other side the meaning of it . By telling the student to form the word, e.g. angioplasty, he will look after angi/o(vessel) and plasty(surgical repair). To learn what the word means, students will look on the other side of the page and thy to translate it, in this case surgical repair of a vessel. Images. Visual memory is an asset in Medical School. Thats why, we thought that correlating words with images would be a great way to remember terms! For example apnea= temporary loss of breathing/sleeping disorder in which breathing stops repeatedly for more than 10 seconds, causing measurable blood deoxygenation. By using this image, we teach what causes the disease and what should be done to treat/prevent. We have tried to make the learning experience as interactive and fun as possible, therefore we have found videos that associate difficult terms to easy to remember phrases/words,also tried using flashcards and other fun quizzes http://quizlet.com/139697/flashcards http://quizlet.com/1058061/flashcards

To proove to each other that these methods actually work we have tried to project all these videos and quizzes and challenge each other to get higher scores, and it worked!
