Introduction

Welcome
Welcome to the Spanish for Diplomatic Security. This interactive distance learning
course is designed for Diplomatic Security officers, special agents, and investigators
who have reached the proficiency level S-2 or higher, and have job-related language
needs.
The Spanish for Diplomatic Security Team
The Spanish for Diplomatic Security team consists of the Online Mentor, a Language
Training Supervisor, and a Distance Learning Specialist. They are available to support
your learning and to assist you with administrative and technical matters.
Your Mentor
As a course participant, you will be assigned to work with a designated online mentor.
Your mentor will communicate with you on the telephone, via e-mail, and on the forum.
All mentors are instructors at FSI with extensive teaching and mentoring experience.
Your mentor will provide you with his or her contact information in the introductory letter.
Language Training Supervisor
Your Language Training Supervisor will assist you with pedagogical and administrative
questions. He or she will see that your study program is as suitable to your needs as
possible.
Distance Learning Specialist
Your Distance Learning Specialist will assist you with enrollment and technical
questions related to your distance language course.
Course Overview
Goals
The Spanish for Diplomatic Security course assists in acquiring speaking and listening
comprehension skills specific to Diplomatic Security work. Lessons provide
opportunities to practice the Spanish language needed to navigate different types of
security situations. The course can be accessed unit by unit or by individual lessons.
Structure
The Spanish for Diplomatic Security is organized into three units with two to four
lessons in each unit. Some lessons have two to three tasks for a total of fourteen tasks
in the course. The course is meant to be completed in fourteen weeks, so you should
pace yourself to cover approximately one task per week. Here is an overview of the
contents.

Time Commitment
The biggest factor in your success will be the amount of time you devote to the course.
We suggest that you allocate 4 to 6 hours each week. Your weekly work on Spanish for
Diplomatic Security will typically include assignments from your mentor and work with
Internet resources.
Minimum System Requirements
To use Spanish for Diplomatic Security, you must have a computer with a Pentium III
900 MHz processor or higher, running Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows
Vista. The computer must also run Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher and
Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher.
Communicating During the Course
You will interact with your mentor and with other students through the phone, forum,
and e-mail.
Forum
You will access the forum via the Internet through the FSI LearnCenter. The link for the
forum is located on the LQB441 Spanish for Diplomatic Security launch page beneath
the course link.
E-mail
E-mail is typically the medium for private discussion between you and your mentor, and
possibly between you and assigned course partners. Other discussions should take
place on the forum so that all your classmates can participate.
Important Security Note:
During this course, you may not use your personal e-mail or the forum to send any
personal information such as the location of your home or directions to your home or
work.
