Part II: Annas Illnesses

Illnesses Effect on System (if applicable)

Diabetes Sickle Cell
Anemia
Heart Disease Urinary Tract
Infection
Cardiovascular

Water in the
blood stream
causes high
blood pressure,
this is a
complication
for diabetics
because it can
be much
harder for them
to keep blood
pressure
normal.

Causes
reduces RBC
count which
means other
body systems
may not be
getting enough
blood
(Avascular
necrosis)
Can cause
blocked
arteries in
different blood
vessels which
can lead to a
myocardial
infarction
N/A
Digestive

Diabetes can
mess with the
digestive
system by
causing
Gastrointestinal
discomfort and
distress to the
body
Bilirubin
gallstones -
sickle cells die
in 20 days;
liver breaks
down the
bilirubin; extra
bilirubin can
become a
gallstone in the
gallbladder
(bilirubin forms
bile)
Arteriosclerosis
causes
reduced blood
flow to other
parts of the
body which
could cause
problems such
as intestinal
ischemia in the
digestive
system
Many UTIs
start in the
digestive
systems due to
the bacteria, E
coli. That
generally lives
in the digestive
system
Immune

Diabetes can
cause wounds
in the body to
heal a lot
slower which is
directly related
to the
weakened
immune
system
Sickle Cell
Anemia
patients have
a weakened
immunes
system which
makes them
more a risk for
developing
different
infections
The immune
system
response after
a heart attack
and greaty
increases the
chances of
having a stroke
or a 2
nd
heart
attack
Increased
production of
lymphocytes
(B & T cells)
and antibodies
against the
bacteria;
Inflammatory
response (may
increase
additional UTI
and/or damage
to urinary tract
structures.
Nervous Diabetes Sickle Cell During heart N/A

Nervous

causes a
reduced
circulation to
lower legs;
Neurapathy
over time can
injure the walls
of tiny blood
vessels that
nourish the
nerves.
Anemia
patients have
a reduced
RBC count
which means
there is less
blood
circulating
through out the
body which
could
eventually lead
to strokes
failure,
Sympathic
Nervous
System (SNS)
is activated
N/A
Respiratory

Diabetic
Ketoacidosis
(DKA), a
symptom
associated with
diabetes can
cause rapid
breathing.
Acute Chest
Syndrome is a
direct cause of
sickle cell
anemia due to
RBC getting
trapped in the
chest. This
eventually
causes
illnesses like
pneumonia.
Dyspnea
(shortness of
breath) is a
symptom
caused by
having heart
disease.
N/A
Urinary

If you have
high blood
glucose leves,
ketones can
build up in the
blood and
cause thirst,
urination, and
vomiting.
Due to
weakened
immune
system,
infections and
illnesses like
UTIs can be
caused
N/A Untreated UTIs
can cause
damage to
organs that
make up the
urinary sytem,
for example
the kidney
