Why Not Zoning?
Consumers Want It!
Surveys have shown over 60% of Homeowners
would pay $1,200 for zoning when offered.
According to an NAHB survey, when asked
what they would be willing to pay if their energy
costs could be reduced roughly $1,000 a year, 51
percent checked $5,000 to $10,999 and another
16 percent said $11,000 or more. Thirty-two
percent said they were willing to pay less than
$5,000.
Contractors Do Not Offer It.

Zoning Terms and Definitions

SYSTEM HVAC unit supplying a single or multitude of zones.
ZONE An area to be controlled by a single thermostat.
THERMOSTAT Device to control temperature to a zone. Always just one thermostat per zone.
DAMPER Device to control airflow to a zone. Multiple dampers can be used to control a
zone.
CONTROL PANEL Device that receives signal for multiple thermostats and sequences position of
dampers and operates HVAC unit as needed.
BY-PASS Method of relieving excess air back to the Return Air when a minority number of
zones are open. NOT TO CONFUSED WITH A DUMP ZONE.
DUMP ZONE Relieving air to non-critical area. Basement, hallway, etc. thats not directed
ducted to Return Air.

TON Equal to 12,000 BTUs. Used to measure cooling and heat pump unit capacity.

CFM Cubic Feet of air per Minute. Typically 400 CFM per ton of cooling.

FPM Feet Per Minute. Velocity of air moving thru duct or coming out of an outlet.

Static Pressure Force of air being produced by blower motor. Most all residential systems are
designed at a 0.1W.C. (Water Column), also may be noted just as S.P.

Airflow characteristics
Garden Hose
As the water flows out of the hose there is:
A certain volume of water, Gallons Per Minute (GPM) = Air CFM
Water flows out at a certain velocity = Feet Per Minute FPM = Same as air.
Water has a pressure behind it in the system to make it come out = Static Pressure, usually measured
in Pounds per Square Inch = PSI = Air S.P.
Air is a fluid just like water
March 23-25, 2011 Landsdowne, VA
2004-11 ZONEFIRST
Airflow characteristics
Garden Hose
Cover opening with thumb
As your thumb begins to close up the hose opening the following occurs:
Thumb feels increased pressure = increased static pressure
Water from hose shoots farther = increased velocity
Same volume of water flows.up until the point where your thumb can
apply more pressure that that of the water coming from the hose. Then
youre reducing the volume of water.

Duct Design for Zoning
The main principle of duct design for
forced air zone control is to maintain a
constant volume of air (CFM) through
the HVAC unit, when only one zone is
open and maintain adequate airflow
when all zones are open.
Be careful not to oversize the duct system.

The arm can also be offset to the blade to
add more or less weight.
All Zones Open the By-Pass should be
closed. As the larger zones Close, the by-
pass opens to relieve the excess air.
To adjust, close all zone dampers, except
for the smallest zone. Check the static and
noise level and adjust by-pass damper
open to maintain that level,
Modulating By-Pass
Operates Independently of the Zone Dampers
Modulates based on static pressure in duct
system.
Opens as duct pressure increases above 0.3
W.C.
Closes as duct pressure drops below 0.2 W.C.
Stops between 0.2 and 0.3 W.C.
By-Pass Control needs a dead band.
Do Not want by-pass to HUNT seeking balance.

This allows continuous air circulation to

Zone Plenum Sensor Model ZPS
Protects HVAC Equipment from over-heating or over-cooling when only a few zones are calling and/or air is
being bypass through the return. Leaving Air Sensor is placed in supply air plenum, out of line of sight of heat
exchanger, evaporator coil and before radiant strips on a heat pump.
Adjustable setting on heating from 100F to 170F on panel.
Cooling is fixed at 45F.
NO SENSOR JUMPER When not using this sensor place jumper across these
pins. If jumper is not in place System LED will flash and HVAC Unit will not
activate.

24 Volt, 40VA Transformer, Model T24
C - Common

A separate 24 Volt, AC, 40VA Transformer is recommended to power the zone
panel, thermostats and damper motors.
The re-settable fuse protects the board and transformer from accidental shorts. If
the board is not operating, check for to see if HOT. If it is remove all wiring to
the circuit board and apply only the 24 Volt Transformer to the panel. The panel
power LED will illuminate showing the board is operating and now to check for
the short, somewhere.

MZA2 Zone Adder
Using a RJ11 (six conductor) telephone jack cord connects the main panel
to the adder panel. Adds two zones to the MZS4 Zone Panel. Up to 3
MZA2 Panels can be used to add up to 6 zones for a total of 10 zones.
Each Zone Adder panel comes with a 7 foot cable.

Typically use 2-50,000BTU Furnaces.
Being that cost is often a driver in the HVAC Business
the units are minimum efficiency.

Zoning and Efficiency Ratings
Try this exercise with a contractor using two units in
new construction:
Review the previous two slides using the brand
equipment he uses.
After calculating using one unit vs. two, ask to see his
equipment pricing and price out the 2 lower efficiency
units vs. the one higher efficiency unit.
Compare the costs and add in a Zoning System.
Find the difference. In many cases the equipment cost
may be the same or somewhat less for the single unit. The
difference can be used to pay for the zoning system.
