Brief Description
Soft starters protect electric motors by reducing the starting torque. The power supply is protected against dan-
gerous current peaks by reducing the current input during the start.
Areas of Application
Smooth starting and stopping of three-phase AC induction motors.
For all applications where up to now star-delta starters have been used.
For example: Fans, pumps, compressors, conveyor belts, grinding machines, saws, textile machines, mixers,
presses, etc.

Dimensions refer also to picture 1: 197,4 x 228,6* x 162,6 mm (W x L X D).
(* With earth connections 246,9 mm)
Maximum wire sizes:
Control- (2) 12 - 22 AWG / 2.5 - 0.5 sq_mm (flexible)
Line In- (1) 1/0 - 12 AWG / 35 - 2.5 sq_mm
Load Out- (1) 2/0 - 14 AWG / 50 - 4.0 sq_mm
Earth connection- max. cross section 16 sq_mm; two terminals each on top and bottom connection via
screw M4
Torque for control terminal screws and power connection lugs:
Control terminal: 0.8 1.1Nm
Power terminals: L side, upper left side (5/16inch screw): 5.7Nm
L side, upper right side (8/32inch screw): 2.3Nm
L side, upper middle side (5/8inch screw): 28Nm
T side: 14Nm
Only designed for inside delta operation with external bypass,
IEC 947-4-2 80A: AC53b: 6-2: 240 at 55C
80A: Ie rated current
AC53-b: utilization category = induction motor / external bypassed
6-2: maximum starting current 6 * Ie for 2 s (480 A for 2 s) (required by Carrier 469 A for 2 s)
240: minimum off time = 240 s
Duty cycle based on (6) starts/hour at 480 A for 2.0 s
Input data (Terminals A1 + A2):
10 mA typical @ 120 VAC
1500 VAC optical isolation;
on-state Voltage: 85 VAC (minimum)
on-state Current 6 mA (minimum)
off-state Voltage: 40 VAC (maximum)
off-state Current: 3 mA (maximum)
Input impedance: 13 kOhm typical
Bypass contactor is controlled by "Motor Up To Speed" output (Terminals 17 + 18):
Output data:
10 A make, 1 A break @ 120 V (solid state),
1500 VAC optical isolation;
on-state Voltage drop: 1,2 VAC (typical)
off-state Leakage current: 2 mA (typical), 9 mA (maximum)
The Thyristors are gated on during bypass. A 0.5 second turn off delay of Thyristors is added at stopping. This allows
the bypass contactor to open without arcing!

Switches
"2/3 / Full Range" - Current Ranges
Allows the calibration ranges of the "Starting Current" and "Overload Current" pots to be changed.
For Carrier both the "Full Range" and "2/3 Range" could be used!
"0.5 / 0.0 Sec" - Off Delay
Allows the motor turn off to be delayed 0.5 seconds.
For Carrier the software was changed to a standard delay of 0.5 seconds independent from this switch.
A extra setting is not necessary!
"ABC / CBA" - Phase Rotation
Allows lockout of the motor if the source power phase rotation is reversed.
The Carrier setting is determined by installation power source.
"Fault Reset Switch (Push)" switch
Allow reset of Overload, Single Phase, or Shorted SCR fault trip.
(Note, Phase Rotation and Single Phase are self correcting, does not require a reset, and the motor will
restart automatically.)
The typical setting does not apply. Push only to reset after fault trip.
Adjustments
"Starting Current" - Pot
Setting range is 378 A to 1071 A (252 A to 714 A) Line Amps at full (2/3) range setting of SW1. The dial
markings are from "0" to "F", 16 settings are possible.
For Example, a Carrier motor with maximum 812 Line Amps starting current: Set Pot to "9" = 794 A at
"Full Range"!
"Overload Current" - Pot
Setting range is 126 A to 441 A (84 A to 294 A) Line Amps at full (2/3) range setting of SW1. The dial
markings are from "0" to "F", 16 settings are possible.
Typical setting for a motor is to the rated motor current. Setting for Carrier is maximum 441 (294) Amps
full (2/3) range: Pot setting to "F" cause on no need for overload protection!
(Note: The 2/3 Full switch effects both pot ranges.)
LED Indicators
"Control Power On" (Green)
Shows that AC115V is applied to B1 + B2.
"Motor Run" (Green)
Shows that the motor is energized and running.
"Motor Up To Speed" (Green)
Shows that the motor is not in current limit and should be running at full speed.
"Normal Phase Rotation" (Green)
Shows that the Source three phase power matches the ABC/CBA selection.
"Motor Overload" (Red)
Shows that the starter tripped on an inverse time overload.
"Shorted S.C.R." (Red)
Shows that a current was flowing in one or two phases when the motor should not be running. This indi-
cates a shorted SCR.
"Single Phase" (Red)
Shows that the lowest motor running current is less than 40% of the highest motor running current for more
than 2 seconds.
(Note: Green indicators are normal operation functions and red indicators show fault trips.)
