Software P1 & P2
Cloud Computing P8
Network storage, usually accessed through a web browser usually inside of a
large data center somewhere in the world. There are usually more than one copy of your
files, so if a data center burned down, your data is safe.

Graphical user Interface (GUI) vs Command Line Interface (CLI) P5
Graphical User interface (GUI)-the user "Plays with"(interfaces) the computer
using a combination of Icons, windows, menus, pointers(graphical)
Command Line Interface(CLI)- The user interfaces with the computer using
text which is typed into a command line.
Main components of a computer P

Random Access Memory (RAM) vs read only memory (ROM) P3
Long Term Memory- ROM- Non Volatile
Hard Drives, Flash Drives, External Drives, Optical Disks, Magnetic Tape
Storage, SD Card
Short Term Memory- RAM- Volatile
RAM, PRAM, Cache, Memory
Volatile and Non-Volatile memory
Volatile means data is lost when power is turned off
Input Device Processor and
Internal Memory
Output Device
Secondary Storage (Backing
Storage, Long Term Memory,
Non- Volatile)
Non- Volatile means data
is turned off
Section2-
How to determine what is an input device and an output device. P11 & P20
Input Device- Keyboard, mouse, microphone, joystick---Key words: enter, input,
give
Output Device- Monitor, Speakers, printer---key words: output, readouts, printout,
give
Chip readers and Pin pads P14
Chip is on a card, contains data, and a chip reader reads the data.PIN pad is a
security code restricting access to the chip
Optical Mark recognition (OMR) vs Optical Character recognition (OCR) P17
OMR Recognizes only simple shapes. It is more reliable and makes less mistakes,
because there are only few common shapes.
OCR Recognizes complicated characters. This is more advanced, but makes many more
mistakes.
Thin Film Transistor (TFT) monitors P21

Printers (Graph Plotter, Lasers, Ink-Jet, Dot- Matrix) P22
Graph Plotters- Very Large printers used for building plans
Laser- A piece of paper is negatively charged in a shape with static electricity and
laser. The ink (toner) is positively charged. The toner is placed on the paper, sticks to
the negatively charged shape, and the rest is brushed off
Ink- Jet-Drops of ink are sprayed onto a paper. Best image of all printers.
Dot- matrix-drops of ink are deposited using a small stamp in thr shape of a dot.
Cheapest to run. Lowest quality, continuous paper feed.

CD- RPM,DVD- ROM,CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD-RW,DVD-RAM,Bluary,DVD+,and
DVD-;Video-DVD, Music DVD
Main, Internet, Temporary, and Backing Memory P28
Main memory is boot hard drive. Internet memory is any hard drive inside the
computer(including main)
Temporary memory is RAM
Backing storage is usually external hard drive, or internal memory which is not main
Serial/ Sequential Access vs Direct/Random Access P28
Serial/Sequential Access means data is stored in order9magnetic Tape). You must
rewind and fast forward as needs
Direct/Random Access, all data is stored in a HDD wherever it fits. The computer has
a map (File system) of the location of the three files, and is angles to go to that
location. If the map is lost. The computer does not know where the files are.
One advantages of Direct/Random access is in deleting files, the files are never
deleted, only the file system map.
