Dear Friends,
Tonights Silver Bell Awards Dinner brings together some of the
Institutes most generous and motivated supporterspeople who
have intimate knowledge of the maritime industry. They know
what this evenings fundraiser means to many mariners around the
worldmen and women who depend on the services the Seamens
Church Institute (SCI) provides.
Terms like mariners service agency or mariners welfare
organization can, on their own, (without any direct experience
of life on the water) sound nebulous. Those words dont pinpoint
the specifc, important things SCI does; and the Institutes varied
workfrom maritime education to pastoral care to legal advocacy,
extending across thousands of miles of oceans and riversmakes
it diffcult choose a starting point when explaining why SCI is so important.
But why should it be diffcult? SCI serves real mariners, and we have real stories to show just how
big an impact we make on the lives of men and women in the maritime industry. Generalizing our
work or making the people we serve anonymous leaves mariners and us in no better shape than
when we began.
So, we hope that youll share our stories with your friends and familystories that you know
frsthand, stories that you hear from your colleagues and stories that we share with you. To help,
tonight were sending each of you home with a small pamphlet called Five Reasons Why SCI
Matters. I urge you to take a look through it, and then give it to someone who doesnt yet support
SCI, outlining some clear motivations for championing our work.
With your help, the world will see why SCI is so important to mariners and the world. Thank you

THE HISTORY OF THE SILVER BELL
Each year, the Seamens Church Institute presents the Silver Bell Award to an individual or
group of individuals in recognition of outstanding leadership in the maritime community.
The bell was chosen to symbolize the award because of its historical signifcance in reli-
gious ceremonies and its use on board ships since ancient times.
For centuries the bell has announced the hours of the day, marked the beginning and the
end of a watch, called the crew to mess and to prayer, and warned of danger.
Believing that dangerous beasts populated the seas, mariners as late as the 16th century
festooned their ships with bells which were thought to have special powers to ward
off demons and monsters and to dissolve thunderstorms.
In England, ships bells were always held in high regard. It was customary in the Royal Navy
for the children of British subjects living in foreign ports to be baptized under the bell of a
British warship. The childs name was inscribed inside the bell, forming visible ties between
British nationals and Mother England.
In the past, many United States Navy ships carried interesting and beautiful bells, but,
unfortunately, in many cases there are no records of their history or whereabouts.
Seldom do bells serve on more than one ship, although bells from wrecked or scrapped
ships have had new careers. The bell from the steamboat Atlantic, which capsized off
Fishers Island in November 1846, is an example. The bell was acquired by subscription
from the Atlantic Mutual Companies for the Institutes foating chapel for seamen in 1847
and has been moved to prominent places in successor SCI buildings.

ORRIN H. INGRAM
Orrin H. Ingram oversees Ingram Marine Group, the largest maritime transportation operation on the
United States inland waterway system. Founded in 1946 by his grandfather, the company operates over
100 vessels and 4,000 barges crewed by hundreds of professional mariners. Orrin started working for the
family business in 1982, and in 1999 became President and CEO of Ingram Industries and Chairman of
Ingram Barge Company. Through tremendous growth under his leadership, Orrin extended the defnition
of family to include his employees, making the care and safety of the maritime workforce a top priority.
The phrase Zero Harm, has become one of the key values championed by his company. Orrin has worked
with senior leaders at Ingram to establish programs that promote and safeguard mariner healthboth
mental and physicaland the health of the environment. During his time as Chairman, his company has
refned employee care practices, advanced professional training opportunities for mariners and ensured
mariners work safely in a dangerous environment.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Orrin works actively to support important causes. He
sits on the board of directors of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as Chairman of the
Chambers Education 2020 Initiative. He also serves on the boards of Alignment Nashville, Boys & Girls
Clubs of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Public Education Foundation, the US Sportsmens Alliance, the
Wetlands America Trust Board for Ducks Unlimited, the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and the
Middle Tennessee Council of Boy Scouts of America.
CAPTAIN JAMES J. MCNAMARA
Captain Jim McNamara has devoted his life to improving the maritime industry, starting as a volunteer
with SCI in the 1950sa dedication he has continued to this day as he serves on the Institutes Board
of Trustees. After graduating from New York State Maritime College, Jim worked for States Marine Lines,
rising to the rank of Master in only four years. He came ashore in 1970, joining National Cargo Bureau as
a surveyor. Throughout his career with the Bureau, Jim and his family lived in San Francisco, Sacramento,
Houston, Baton Rouge and Baltimore, never losing touch with SCI.
After returning to New York, Jim became president of National Cargo Bureau in 1993, working with the
International Maritime Organization as Chair of the Cargo Committee for eight years. He also served as
Chairman of the Marine Section of the National Safety Council, President of the Alumni Association at SUNY
Maritime College and Chairman of its Maritime Industry Museum. He is a member of the Classifcation
Committee of the American Bureau of Shipping and sits on the Board of Directors of International
Shipholding Corporation. Jim and his wife Connie live in New Jersey and have two children, including a son
who works for Genco Shipping, and several grandchildren.
