Groups team up for
annual planting
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
In an effort to beautify Main Street,
the Garden Club and Moorestown Busi-
ness Association teamed up for the an-
nual planting on May 31.
Five members of the community
came out for the planting, including
Don Powell, vice president of the MBA,
and his wife Janet, along with two pro-
fessional landscapers and Gina Zegel,
former president of the Garden Club.
We are trying to get downtown in
shape, Powell said. The appearance of
Main Street benefits the businesses in
downtown, so we decided to bring in
some professional landscapers to get the
job done right.
There were 100 perennial flowers
planted on both sides of Main Street
from Church Street to Chester Avenue.
The volunteers also spread 10 yards of
mulch donated by the township in the
flowerbeds.
While these efforts were directed at
preparing for Moorestown Day on June
7, Powell and Zegel have a broader vi-
sion for the future.
The hope is that the residents and

New flowers line Main Street after the Moorestown Garden Club and MBA teamed up for the annual planting on May 31. The annual planting serves as a way to
continue to draw people to downtown, said MBA Vice President Don Powell. Volunteers weeded and mulched the flowerbeds, then planted new flowers.

Buddy Ball
Special to The Sun
On Sunday, May 4, at Hartford Crossing Park in Medford with the
Phillie Phanatic looking on, Moorestowns Marshall Saponaro hit it
out of the park. Literally. As part of the Buddy Ball program, open
to special needs players, Saponaro was able to hit, run around the
bases and score. Each player teamed with a Shawnee High School
baseball player to help him or her throughout the game. Players re-
ceived jerseys, hats, trophies and a snack.

T
he principle of the American
Dream is simple: Work hard
and you can achieve anything.
It doesnt matter who you are, where
you come from or where you want to
go, you can get there in America.
The principle itself is simple, al-
though its not easy to attain. It takes
hard work, dedication and some good
old-fashioned luck.
The American Dream is why the
United States is considered the melt-
ing pot of the world.
Pilgrims first came to the New
World for something more. They got
that. Then their descendants fought
for the right to be independent and
continue that dream.
Generations that followed forged
successful, fulfilling lives here, some
starting with dirt and ending with
gold. That made our country even
more popular for more immigrants
from different parts of the globe.
This opportunity, the availability for
upward mobility, to make something
of yourself, is the crux of what we are.
But is that American Dream becom-
ing less of a reality and more of a pure
dream? Many people feel that it is.
CNNMoneys American Dream Poll
found that almost 60 percent of re-
spondents feel that the American
Dream no matter how they define it
is out of reach.
Thats not good. Whats even worse
is that adults between 18 and 34 said
that the dream is not only unattain-
able, but 63 percent said its impossi-
ble. Even worse, all Americans agree
with them. Their parents generation
who by the way, think they are better
off than their parents were say that
their kids, these 18-34 year olds, wont
be better off than them.
Yikes!
Maybe the survey results shouldnt
be all that surprising, considering the
recession that turned the world upside
down and has continued to have ill ef-
fects on the job market. But what the
results should be is a wake-up call.
The American Dream was the foun-
dation of our country, and it needs to
be for years to come. If any one gener-
ation finds that dream unattainable,
well lose our identity and most im-
portantly, well lose these people.
So what does this generation need?
It needs opportunity. It needs jobs. It
needs the availability of mobility.
Who can provide it? That is the
question that needs to be answered.
The American Dream...
...its out of reach for most Americans, so says a new poll

Residents have come out to
keep up with plants in the past
businesses along Main Street will
keep up with the plants and flow-
ers, Zegel said. It is in every-
ones best interest for Main Street
to look presentable, and the entire
town will benefit from it.
In the past, residents have
come out to keep up with the
plants, watering them and weed-
ing the flowerbeds. But Powell un-
derstands the township cannot
keep counting on residents to
take the initiative.
The mission of the MBA is to
draw people in, Powell said.
Keeping up with the appearance
of Main Street makes shopping
and dining in downtown more
pleasant, which keeps people
coming. Hopefully, with the help
of the businesses, we can keep
Main Street looking beautiful.
Initiatives are in the works to
make sure this happens. The Gar-
den Club and MBA are discussing
an adopt-a-plot program that
would allow businesses and resi-
dents the chance to adopt a
flowerbed. The owner would
then be responsible for keeping
up with the flowerbed and would
get a sign with their name on it
hanging above the plot.
We are tossing around ideas
that we think will get the shop
owners and residents excited
about the appearance of Main
Street, Powell said. Whether its
competitions, planting events or
ownership, all we want is for
Main Street to look good all year
round.
If the residents of
Moorestown continue to buy
local, more businesses will open,
Zegel said. The only way to keep
people buying local is to make
Main Street a place where people
want to be, and that starts with
the way it looks.
And while the annual planting
may be over, there is still more to
do.
Were getting right back out
there on June 4 to hang flower
baskets on the lamp poles on
Main Street, Zegel said. The
MBA and businesses have both
chipped in to pay for the baskets,
and we appreciate all the support
we have gotten so far.

Receive alerts for traffic issues
The Burlington County Bridge
Commission wants more mo-
torists who use the Tacony-
Palmyra and Burlington-Bristol
Bridges to know about scheduled
bridge openings and other traffic
issues that may affect their com-
mute. Although 5,304 devices are
currently signed up to receive the
alerts via the well-known Nixle
system, the commission wants to
make sure that all the motorists
know about the free, timesaving
convenience.
"This notification service has
been a great success, said Com-
mission Chairman John Comeg-
no, but were sure there are
more people out there who use
our bridges who might not be
aware of this service.
As part of that education
process, banners were displayed
at the Tacony-Palmyra and
Burlington-Bristol Bridges start-
ing May 14. Those signs will en-
courage motorists to see detailed
information and instructions on
the commissions website,
www.bcbridges.org.
Customers can sign up to re-
ceive notices by email, text mes-
sage or both. They can also
choose to receive messages relat-
ed to the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge,
the Burlington-Bristol Bridge or
both bridges. Messages have noti-
fied motorists about upcoming
bridge openings, vehicular acci-
dents, traffic issues or planned
construction work that may affect
travel.
Because the bridges open on
demand (upon vessels requests),
advance notification isnt always
possible, but when adequate ad-
vance notice is provided, the
Nixle system notifies registered
users. Notification to the com-
mission varies greatly so the
timetable for notifications via
Nixle varies accordingly.
We at the county level have
been using Nixle for some time
now and have found that it is a
great tool for reaching our resi-
dents and keeping them in-
formed, said Burlington County
Freeholder Director Bruce Gar-
ganio. I am glad to see the Bridge
Commission expanding their ef-
forts as we all try to best serve the
people of Burlington County.
The service is free of charge,
both to the Bridge Commission
and to the users (if the users cell
phone carrier charges for text
messages, users will incur that
charge, but there is no opt-in or
per-message charges imposed by
the bridge commission).
Users can sign up at
www.nixle.com, from the link pro-
vided on the commissions web-
site, www.bcbridges.org or by
sending a text message to (888) 777
(type TACPAL to receive alerts
related to the Tacony-Palmyra
Bridge; type BBBB to receive
alerts about the Burlington-Bris-
tol Bridge).
Offering the 80,000 people who
cross our bridges every day no
toll increase for the past 12 years
has saved them money, said
Comegno, and this notification
system can save them time.

When MoorArts asked the fine
