1. GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This standard establishes a nomenclature for fabricated structural steel.

1.2 Units

Either U.S. Customary or Metric Units, shown in parenthesis, shall be considered standard, as defined by the
Order.

1.3 Calculated Weight of Fabricated Structural Steel

The weight of fabricated structural steel for quotation and contract weight billing purposes shall be calculated
with Subparagraphs 1.3 a, b and c below. Items such as wastage, mill tolerance, bolting, shop welds, platform
grating fasteners, platform floor plate fasteners, galvanizing, paint, and other surface treatments shall not be
included as part of the weight; however, they shall be included in the quoted unit prices.

a. The weight of gage sheet, floor plate, grating, plate etc. shall be the actual required net area shown on the
shop detailed drawings multiplied by recognized industry nominal data for weight per unit area. Small
openings of less than 2 ft
2
(0.2 m
2
) shall be neglected in determining net area.

b. The weight of structural members shall be the actual lengths given on the shop detailed drawings multiplied
by recognized industry nominal data for weight per unit length for the size of the member shown. Clips,
gussets, stiffeners, end and cover plates shall be included in the contract weight. The nominal weight per
unit length of the structural member alone shall be used in determining coding classification unless
otherwise specified herein. Coping, blocking, clipping, punching, bolting, floor fasteners and surface
protection shall not be considered in determining weight.

c. Back to back elements shall be categorized based on the weight of the combined components.
