Graduate Application for International Applicants, General Supplemental
Page 3 of 3, December 2007

Financial Requirements and General Instructions

Who should submit financial documents:

International applicants who are or will be in F-1 or J-1 visa status are required to show proof of
adequate funding for at least one year before an I-20 or DS-2019 form can be issued.
When should you submit your financial documents:
Funding information for immigration purposes may be submitted along with the application for admission,
or after the admission decision has been made.
What are the requirements:
The minimum requirements for one year are $26,000 for the Blacksburg campus and $27,000 for the
National Capital Region Campus. These amounts include tuition and fees, room and board, and
miscellaneous expenses. An additional $4,000 should be added for an accompanying spouse and
$1,500 for each accompanying child. Please note that these amounts are subject to change.
How can you submit financial documents:
Students must submit the Immigration Information Form along with appropriate attachments. The
Immigration Information Form follows this page.
What types of documents are accepted:
The following documents are accepted as supporting documents for financial certification (students may
have one or a combination of these):
x A current (less than six months old), original bank statement or certification from another legal
financial institution. If you have only a web statement, you need to write on the bottom of the
statement that, “I verify that this is a true copy of my bank statement as of today’s date”, and sign and
date the form.
x A completed Affidavit of Support form from the sponsor/bank account holder (if other than the
student).
x Written confirmation from the sponsoring institution of a scholarship, fellowship, assistantship or
other type of funding. In case of an assistantship award from Virginia Tech, a copy of the
assistantship agreement signed by the academic department is required.
x In case of personal funds, an original bank statement, or statement from any legal financial institution
that includes the student's name, as well as the amount available. If you have only a web statement,
you need to write on the bottom of the statement that, “I verify that this is a true copy of my bank
statement as of today’s date”, and sign and date the form.

Other considerations:
Financial documents which are older than six months are not acceptable. Only original, current
documents will be accepted. Many academic departments do not offer assistantships for the first year of
study. No international student can work off campus for the first nine months of stay in the United States.
Employment on campus is possible, but students should not plan on paying for the complete cost of their
education from on-campus part-time jobs.

Deadlines for submission:

The financial certification form and appropriate attachments must be received by the Graduate School no
later than June 1st for the Fall semester and no later than November 1st for the Spring semester.

Please note: Immigration documents are mailed through a bulk mail service, and can take up to 6
weeks to be delivered, depending upon the country. If you desire express mail delivery, please
include the following credit card information with your submitted documents: type of card,
cardholder’s name, card number, and expiration date. The shipping company accepts Visa,
Master Card, American Express, and Diners Club.

Please mail these documents to the following address:
