Sub: Carleton University Certijicate programme in
University Teaching Skills

Pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding that Visvesvaraya Technological
University, Belgaum had with Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada in the recent past, we have
received a pro.posal for conduct of "Certificate Program in University Teaching Skills" from
Carleton University. The proposed program is for two weeks and will be conducted at Carleton
University campus, Ottawa in April, 2014. The said program consists of 10, 6-hour sessions
during which the participants gain hands-on experience with a range of teaching and
assessment methods, learn how to effectively manage both large and small classes, and
address teaching and learning issues particular to engineering.
The program will delve into different facets of university teaching such as lesson plans,
assessment of student learning, micro teaching, and courseware design. The entire program is
being facilitated by senior and accomplished academicians from the Faculty of Engineering and
Design at Carleton University, Ottawa.
The ManagemenUPrincipals of affiliated engineering colleges of VTU, Belgaum are
requested to go through the enclosed information brochure. The approximate cost of the
program (that includes program fee, accommodation for 12 days, breakfast, lunch and dinner
and travel costs from lndia to Ottawa and back) is Rs. 5 Lakh per participant. The entire cost will
have to be borne by the faculty members or by the college that they represent.
lnterested faculty members are requested to send their names through proper channel
to Registrar, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum on or before March 10,2014.

Program Description:
The Certificate in University Teaching Skills is specifically designed to help the faculty to refine
and advance their teaching methods for effective delivery and student engagement. The
program consists of L0, 6-hour sessions during which participants gain hands-on experience
with a range of teaching and assessment methods, learn how to effectively manage both large
and small classes, and address teaching and learning issues particular to engineering. Although
informed by theory, the focus will be on teaching practice. During the course of this two-week,
intensive program, participants wil! develop new course materials and
practice various teaching
approaches that can be directly transferred to enhance their future teaching responsibilities.
As this is a two-week intensive course, there will be out of class work completed each evening
(approximately 2 hours per evening) and four assignments.
Program Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this program, participants will have:

Developed skills and competencies in providing constructive feedback to students by
providing feedback to colleagues participating in the certificate program.

Applied and practiced teaching in video recorded micro-teaching sessions.

Gained knowledge about varieties and uses of educational technologies, including the
appropriate use of in class technologies (class room response systems) and online tools
including the appropriate use of a learning management system, personal learning
environments, and synchronous teaching tools.

This two-week certificate program
is priced at US

per person with a minimum enrollment
of 10 individuals. lf 20 or more individuals participate, the cost per participant will be
$3ZOO.
These costs include the textbook, teaching materials, access to relevant university resources for
the program, breakfast and lunch during the formal certificate program days, a graduation
ceremony and framed certificate. lt does not include travel costs (flights/taxi or other)
transportation to the University, visa costs, health/travel insurance costs, accommodations or
any other miscellaneous expenses in Ottawa. ln accordance with university policy which can be
